About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Rear Derailleur Fixed Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 27, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 27, 2015

Yesterday I rested but I worked on the rear derailleur. The shifting from cog 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 was not working. I needed to shift past the cog I wanted and then back. Looking at the rear derailleur I thought it might be worn out but that was not the problem. I disconnected the cable at the derailleur and then I saw the problem. The adjusting barrel screw was not threaded into the connector and the cable end flopped around without the correct tension on the cable. I threaded the barrel adjuster into the connector, tightened the cable with the chain on the 1st cog. Turning the barrel adjuster a 1/2 turn put the correct tension on the cable and now the shifting is smooth like it should be.

Good thing the shifting got fixed. I wanted to go on a longer ride today and easy shifting comes in handy. I rode the”SR242 – FM1314″ route to the north and west. The ride totaled 48.37 miles. I varied slightly from the recent rides taking FM1485 north to Old Houston Road. I stopped at the Valero station for a few minutes to rest (22 miles at that point) and refill my water bottle. The next stop was about 15 miles away at the Stripes station on FM1314 and Valley Ranch Parkway. From the Valero station I rode south on Old Houston Road to reconnect to SH 242 and continue west to FM1314. Traffic respected my presence on the shoulder with many moving to the middle when the passing or turn lane permitted.

I rolled into the Stripes station at the 37.2 mile point. It was hot and after collecting a Gatorade and refilling my bottle I settled under the pump canopy to rest and eat. A lady leaving stopped in front of me to ask if I was okay. She said she saw me earlier and wanted to be sure I was okay. I said I was doing great and she said it was hot and then drove on. I stayed there about 35 minutes. When I started to leave I felt a coolness as I rode from the shade up to the traffic light to cross FM1314. While I was at Stripes my jersey must have dried out enough for the wind to produce a nice evaporation effect. It didn’t last long as I rode on Old Sorters Road for the 11 miles home. The weather screenshots while I was at Stripes.

7-27-2015 Porter Weather 2

The ride home went smoothly and I arrived there at 1:55. I started riding at 9:47. With the Tour over I can now leave earlier.

With today’s ride I am within 66 miles of the July mileage goal of 834 miles. The forecast calls for hot temperatures (100+) the rest of the week and little to no rain. I plan on biking each day.

How I Fell in Love With Mountain Biking

By Cindy Abbott        blog.rei.com

A few years back I believed soccer was the most exciting sport in the world. I was immersed in it, with a college soccer scholarship and hopes of playing professionally. But that was before I found mountain biking. …

…To train for this, I did miles of road rides with my friend and trainer on some of the most grueling hills the Texas Hill Country had to offer. I woke early before work to ride my mountain bike upwards of 150 miles a week on my home trail. As anyone might imagine, no amount of Texas Hill Country training could prepare a Texan for …

UT alumni document bike trip Pedal South from Alaska to Argentina

By Cat Cardenas        www.dailytexanonline.com

After cycling 4,000 miles to Alaska five years ago, UT alumnus Dyar Bentz challenged himself to go further — bike the 18,000 mile Pan-American Highway and document it along the way.
Bentz began planning his project, Pedal South, after completing his trip with Texas 4000, a charity bicycle ride. He assembled a team in 2013, recruiting UT alumni Ricardo Palomares, Riley Engemoen and Thomas Allison to film and photograph their route as they travel from Alaska to Argentina. In …

Bike riders take to the roads for the Tour de Gap, which offers courses up to 56 miles

by Scott Kirk        www.reporternews.com

BUFFALO GAP — Steve Reese is new to Abilene, but it didn’t take him long to initiate himself into the 32-year tradition of the Tour de Gap bicycle ride.
Reese, who moved to Abilene a couple of months ago as the CEO of Wisteria Place, headed a team of eight riders, six of whom were wearing Wisteria Place jerseys, on Saturday morning in the annual ride that begins in Buffalo Gap and that benefits the Food Bank of West Central Texas.
Reese, 61, has been riding for 10 years, since years of running took its …

Early and Long Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 25, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 25, 2015

Today was the longest ride of the week at 43.41 miles. I rode the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route to the southeast towards Crosby. I started earlier than the other rides this week at 9:07 and got back home at 12:48. Along the ride I saw 36 other bikers, mostly on FM1960 on the Lake Houston Causeway. A few stragglers were on Fairlake Drive and Old Atascocita Road. I left earlier to avoid the heat some and because I decided to watch stage 20 of the Tour after I got back rather than before. It was nice to be back home 2 hours earlier than yesterday when I watched the tour before riding. With this many miles today it puts me at 208.16 miles for the week and 719.26 miles for the month. Now that I am within 115 miles of my 834 mile goal for July I think I will declare Sunday a rest and recovery day. Out of 25 days in July I biked 20 and 9 days in a row. This is the third time I rode this route this year.

At 31.8 miles into the ride I reached the Chevron station in Huffman for a needed rest stop. Before that I only stopped for stop signs, traffic lights and to refill my water bottle at a Shell station on FM2100 north of Hare Cook Road. I was at the Chevron about 40 minutes allowing time for most of the sweat to dry up after using 6 or 7 paper towels to stop the perspiration from running down my arms and legs. I soaked a Greensheet newspaper I sat on so much the pavement was wet when I picked it up. I wore wrist bands which seem to soak up a lot of sweat before it reaches my gloves. The weather screen shots while I was at the Chevron station.

7-25-2015 Huffman WEather 1
7-25-2015 Huffman Weather 2

The overall average speed came in at 14.9 mph but it was up to 15.2 mph for several miles and 15.1 mph as late as 41.2 miles before dropping as I slowed the pedaling to home the last 2 miles in Kingwood.

For the last couple of weeks I have noticed the rusty bolts holding the handlebar in the stem. At first I was thinking titanium bolts until I saw the price on ebay.com. I thought I remembered seeing stainless steel metric hex head cap screws at Lowe’s. Last night on the way home from dinner my wife and I stopped at Lowe’s and bought 4 bolts. I took one of the rusty bolts with us and the sizing tool at Lowe’s gave the size as 5M-.80 x 16. When I got home I replaced each bolt individually to not mess with the handlebar setting. The lock washer on the old bolts was a chore to remove but thanks to some 3in1 oil and pliers I moved them from the old bolt to the new bolts. Now when I ride I can look down on shiny stainless steel cap screws holding the handlebar. The stem is carbon fiber. Below are the old and new screws. Tomorrow I am looking at the rear derailleur cable to see why the shifting to smaller cogs is not working right.
