About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dallas: Urban Cycling

bestevents.us

“Are you interested in getting around on a bike but aren’t sure where to start? Do you want some tips for riding more smoothly in Dallas? Get the knowledge you need to fearlessly take to the streets! Come to the downtown library on Thursday, August 6th from 6:30 – 8:00 PM for an informal and interactive class on urban biking. Christina Jones, a longtime bike courier and bicycle advocate, will share the lessons she’s learned from her many years of experience riding the streets of Dallas. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from a local! Topics covered will include: traffic laws and the rights of people on bikes; how to control traffic by taking the lane; situational awareness and reacting to common situations; what makes a bike-friendly route; and a question and answer session. Bring your snacks, drinks and questions!”

New bike, new rules, safe cyclist

By Donia Caspersen Crouch        www.panews.com

It all started when I took my bike in for routine maintenance. I knew my aged two-wheeler needed help but I had no idea how much. By the time the expert finished checking boxes, the diagnostic report was three pages long.  He strongly suggested replacing the cables, the tires, the grip pads; pretty much everything but the frame.  It reminded me of a liquidation sale. Everything must go!
What the technician was too polite to say was this: Your bike is a …

Another Kind of Sacred Ride WARNING: Long, Heartfelt, and Sad. Wussies Don’t Read

by Bamwa        www.bikemojo.com

Trail Dog to Trailer Dog to Under Dog
Yesterday I had one of the best rides of my life. It wasn’t mountain, it wasn’t road, it was Sacred.
My dog Nia has finally gotten long in the tooth enough for me to decide to put her down. I used a vet that comes to your home where your dog can drift away in familiar surroundings. Last week I thought she might be able to make it another week or so but after a downturn over the weekend decided to schedule the appointment for today . Hence, yesterday was party time. Some of you may know Nia. Besides being GOAT shop dog, she has helped build trail and bridges at Revellie Peak, Reimers Ranch, Pedernales Falls and Pace Bend. She also spent a couple seasons on the TMBRA circuit camping and loitering all over Texas, has helped me sell I “bike”trails stickers at Glen Rose and Syllamo’s Revenge, rooted me on at NUE events in Ark,Ga, and Ohio, and even served as greeter for Enchilada Buffet finishers at the Nut where we began enjoying trails together several years earlier. My first post on this forum was a rant against Government Canyon for threatening to impound my pet for leaving her tethered to my bumper during a ride. I stopped doing it after that but for a while she loved coming along to whatever park and chilling in nature with a water bowl , extra gallon and some shade. Never on hot or cold days and never more than 90 minutes. She particularly enjoyed the picnic benches at Reimers before the new lot and Muleshoe. Heck you may have even topped off her water back then(if so thanks). As she got older she …

Houston area Rides – Katy Flatland

the sci guy        www.bikeforums.net

Yikes. Yeah – I saw a lot of people going balls out like usual like it was no big thang that it was so hot, and heck no we don’t stop at rest stop we ride 100 miles at break-neck pace because that’s what we do because we’re all training for all the races and tour de france. I don’t get that mentality but whatever. I don’t get how there is any enjoyment of the ride itself. I take pleasure in not only the biking, but taking in the countryside and sights to see – and I enjoy seeing more than just the spandex ass 3 feet in front of me in the pace line for 100 miles. But to each their own.
Here’s some pics I took Sunday at the Flatland:

Come out to The Texas Time Trials “The Woodstock of Cycling”

by TTTT        www.bikeforums.net

The Texas Time Trials is an annual series of 5 bicycle races which attracts the top endurance cyclists from all over the world as well as many racers doing their first Ultra Race. The Texas Time Trials is 5 events in one: The Tejas 500 (500 miles in 48 hours; a Race Across America qualifier), The Iron-Butt 24-Hour Time Trial, The Tin Butt 12-Hour, The Texas 6-Hour Shoot-Out and The Texas 26.5 mile sprint. … all hosted on our challenging and scenic 26.5 mile looped course in the heart of North Texas!
By Saturday afternoon, riders will be passing the start-finish at an average rate of a rider per minute, some flying at 20+ mph, and others peddling the last laps of their 500 miles. This makes it an extremely spectator-friendly event. Near the start/finish racers & crew can choose to stay in hotels, camp at the park, eat fast-food, or enjoy fine dining in Glen Rose, Texas. Couple that with primarily low-traffic roads, beautiful rolling hills & …

7/25 & 7/26 Rides: Bat City Road Trip and Red Horn Coffee House!

by Thomas        steinerranchcycling.com

Saturday is the 4th Saturday of the month, and that means field trip! Popular opinion was to join Bat City again, so that is the plan. If you have an idea for the next field trip, send it along! Bat City departs from Red Horn Coffee House (http://redhornbrew.com) at 8am. I understand that their rides can accommodate A and B level riders and that you get to have a nice cold beer from Red Horn’s taps when its over.
Sunday is the Coffee Shop Ride! Last week’s visit to Red Horn was so nice we wanted to repeat it again this week. Yes, this seems like a lot of Red Horn lately but the place is pretty …

League of American Bicyclists Presents Richardson With Our Bronze BFC Certification

Bike Friendly Richardson        bikefriendlyrichardson.org

It was one thing to be honored with becoming the 5th city in Texas, and the first city in north Texas, to be recognized as a Bike Friendly Community. It was even better to actually have a League of American Bicyclists Board Member present us our certification, in person.
Gail Spann, one of the most active and influential board members of the League, also happens to live in north Texas. Instead of sending a League staff member from Washington D.C., Gail came out to personally congratulate Richardson residents and the Richardson City Council for a very difficult accomplishment. We are privileged to to …

The Heat Continues

Texbiker.net Posted on July 22, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 22, 2015

A shorter ride today due to time constraints. I watched stage 17 of the Tour before leaving home at 11:09. Sadly I saw Tejay withdraw from the tour and Alberto suffer a crash with bike problems. Fortunately I didn’t have any issues while biking the “Atascocita – Huffman” route. I biked 27.27 miles under a partly cloudy sky with the temperature in the mid to high 90’s. When I took a short rest break in Huffman at the Chevron station these are the weather screenshots:

7-22-2015 Huffman Weather 1
7-22-2015 Huffman Weather 2

The 100 degrees is where I was heading in Kingwood. The hot breeze helped move the sweat away but it didn’t slow down the production of it. During my short 15 minute stop 7 paper towels and the shade were not enough to get me dry before heading off for the last 11 miles home. Today I rode with just a sweat band. Lately I put a sweat band under a head cover to see if that would redirect the sweat. The head cover worked okay but not great. The sweat band was almost as good plus I could feel the wind through my helmet vents.

My home weather station after the ride.

7-22-2015 Home Weather Finish

Earlier when I rode north on Atascocita Shores Drive to FM1960 I caught a glimpse of what looked like a tandem bike team on the other side of FM1960 riding away from me. The traffic blocked my view as they rode away from me. I turned to the right on FM1960 headed to Huffman. I didn’t see any other bikers.

So far this year I rode this route 3 times. Here is a comparison of those rides.

7-22-2015 Route Rides Comparison Summary YTD

I am making progress on reaching my goal for July. I am up to 608.6 miles towards the 834 mile goal.

Smell of Fumes Replaces Smell of Grass

Texbiker.net Posted on July 21, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 21, 2015

For some reason landscaping crews caught my eye today. It is amazing how many crews drive by me as I ride and the ones I see working in yards. It must be a lucrative business to support all of them. You would think every lawn would be the showcase of the neighborhood. When I stopped at Stripes while biking the “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route I saw at least 6 crews stop for gas and/or food. During the spring as grass grows with more plentiful rain a freshly mowed smell permeates the air as I ride. Now that the heat is here and the rain is not the smell of grass being mowed is not as strong. Blower and mower fumes are more likely what I smell as I ride by.

According to the Houston Chronicle weatherman Houston reached 10 days in a row of 95 degrees or more. It was hot today and I tried to get a little earlier start to beat it but leaving at 10:46 is not early enough. I got back home at 2:00. While I took a break at Stripes I took these screenshots of the Porter weather.

7-21-2015 Porter Weather 1
7-21-2015 Porter Weather 2

I varied the route somewhat by riding north on Valley Ranch Parkway instead of south on Old Sorters Road. I rode through Forest Colony to US59 and then south on the service road to Kingwood Drive. This got the total mileage for the ride up to 37.53 miles. I did not see any other bikers on the route. This is the 4th time I rode this general route. A comparison of those rides.

7-21-2015 Route Ride Comparison Summary YTD

Riding southeast on FM1314 when I got to the Grand Parkway FM1314 overpass construction I pulled up to ride through the detour lane to the left but there was a long line of traffic going east. I looked at the construction activity under the overpass and the few workers there were eating lunch (it was 12:20) and I decided to ride through the work area rather than wait for a break in the traffic. They didn’t seem to notice me riding by.

Before the ride I installed the matching DT Swiss RWS front skewer and now both wheels look alike. I can relax now. I like things to match.

More heat tomorrow and stage 17 of the Tour but I plan on riding but it could be a short route.
