About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

From Austin to Alaska for charity

William Stodalka / Alaska Highway News

About 27 riders stopped in Fort St. John this weekend on a cross-country charity bicycle trip from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, on Saturday.
These University of Texas students have helped raise $670,000 so far for cancer research as part of this year’s annual Texas 4000 trip — named for the 4000 miles it will take to complete their journey.
One of these riders is Ryan Terrebonne. He said he was riding to honour his grandpa, who died of colon cancer when Terrebone was very young.
“He let us do everything we wanted to do, basically, and he’s someone I’d …

In Brazos County from 2013-2014, there was less than a 1% increase in motor vehicle crashes, but from 2013-2014 crashes involving pedestrians have increased by 48% and …

Rolling My Wheels To A New Woodhaven Swimming Hole While Thinking About A Blue Mound Move

by Durango Texas        durangotexas.blogspot.com

It seems as if it has been at least a day since I rolled my wheels around my Woodhaven neighborhood, so with the memory fading of my most recent having done so, today I took my handlebars on a roll around the Woodhaven Country Club Golf Course.
Today I came upon a new view, that being that which …

New Pads Better Stopping

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2015

About a week ago I noticed the rear brake pads were away from the rim and the brake lever almost came to the handlebar when I applied the brakes. I thought the brakes just needed adjusted and I did that. For some reason I decided to order new brake pads just in case I needed them. Last night when I went to the garage I looked at the rear brake pads and I realized they were almost used up. The Stradalli uses FSA brake calipers and the pad holders are black carbon fiber making it hard to tell the pads from the holders. I rolled the bike inside (it was still above 90 even though it was 8:30PM) to replace the pads. The pads use grooves and a holding screw to keep them in place. Getting the left pad out of the holder was hard because it was worn down. I used a small screwdriver to try to slide the pad out but I couldn’t get a good grip. A pair of pliers did the trick. The new pad slid in much easier and I put it back on the caliper arm. The right pad was much easier since it wasn’t worn down quite so much. With the new pads I adjusted the caliper to open enough for the wheel to turn and not touch. Now the brake lever does not come close to the handlebar when I apply the brake. With the carbon rims the new pads now screech a little when I apply the brake. According to the pad description they are for carbon rims. This was at the 9012 mile mark on the Stradalli. Not bad for that amount of miles. The front pads have much more life in them. I use the rear brake much more than the front plus that is where the weight is.

The ride today was a good test of the pad installation. I rode the “Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman” route for 32.71 miles. The ride started at 10:11 and I was back home at 1:02 in time to avoid the real heat of the day. It could get close to 100 later today. I took at rest stop in Huffman at 21.1 miles into the ride. The weather screenshots while I was there.

7-20-2015 Huffman Weather 2

By the time I got home the home weather station showed 103.6 with a 118 heat index. The weather man says a high pressure area is parked over us and it will be like this for awhile.

Today was the 8th time I biked this route this year. I saw only one other biker as I crossed Lake Houston on FM1960 going east. He was going west with his head lowered into the wind and didn’t respond to my wave. A comparison of the 8 rides this year.

Pace Bend Trail Markings

by atx_4s        forums.mtbr.com

I rode pace bend last weekend and had a difficult time following the “designated” loop. I started at the east trailhead (main trailhead) and started the loop clockwise, or attempted to at least. I ended up lost and somehow came out to the north trailhead area. I made my way back towards the east trailhead area, and somehow got myself on the loop with the yellow dots, which is the actual mark that you are supposed to follow. So I guess I feel like the start of the loop from the east trailhead could be marked better.
The other area that gave me issues was the northwest area through the …

A Freelance Route Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 19, 2015

All I wanted to ride today was enough miles to get over 200 for the week. I rolled out the driveway at 12:10 with the weather hot and the sky almost a clear blue. The wind was a hot light breeze which meant no relief from the hot. I had several potential routes in mind but I couldn’t choose one so I wound my way through Elm Grove Village (Kingwood) and into Sherwood Trails Village (Kingwood) and turned where I did. Finally I got to a point where I had to make a choice and rode through Woodbridge Forest and out to Loop 494. I been on all the roads and streets in today’s route but I don’t think I ever put them together in this particular way. I named the route “Valley Ranch – Oakhurst – Forest Cove” because these are subdivisions along the way. I reached my goal riding 24.33 miles which put my week at 212.53 miles. July is now at 511.1 miles against my goal of 834.

I don’t ride through Forest Cove very often because it doesn’t have many exits and the San Jacinto River borders to the south. Before US59 was widened I rode there more. The streets and traffic are good amongst the large homes on large lots with lots of trees. I enjoyed the shade today.

With the late start the weather got ahead of me. These two weather screenshots are after I got home at 1:53.

This is good preparation for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred in August. I also wanted to ride a light day because I biked 6 days this week plus I haven’t watched stage 15 of the Tour yet. More hot and dry weather tomorrow and the rest of the week. I should get an earlier start tomorrow (Monday) with a Tour rest day and no TV.
