About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Across Central Texas

www.forthoodsentinel.com

Copperas Cove
Bike-Run Central Texas
Join the dozens of bicyclists and runners seen each weekend on the roads around Copperas Cove along with miles and miles of deserted roads perfect for avid bikers and runners – or beginners.
Taking advantage of the area’s popularity with bicyclists, Copperas Cove has long been recognized and promoted as the bike/run center of Central Texas.
On any given weekend in Cove, there are 100-200 bicyclists using Cove as a jumping off spot for bike and run tours on farm-to-market and county roads. Cove is in the middle of miles of scenic, well-maintained, traffic-free paved roads.
There are at least 25 bicycle routes ranging in …

Bike Austin Spearheading Campaign for Right Sizing on More City Streets

www.twcnews.com

Some cyclists are asking the City of Austin to invest in more bike lanes.
Bike Austin, which promotes biking as transportation, is spearheading the campaign for “Right Sizing” Austin’s streets.
Right Sizing is a safety improvement plan. It’s designed to make street lanes more narrow, install dedicated turning lanes, and put bike lanes where they’re needed.
A city study found these improvements could reduce accidents by as much as 38 percent.
Bike Austin estimates it could get 20-thousand cars out of downtown Austin every day.

Biking and Walking Plans and Actions: Wednesday’s Show (July 8, 2015)

by Craig Cohen        www.houstonmatters.org

Over the past couple of days, we’ve talked with advocates for cyclists and pedestrians about ongoing concerns over accidents and fatalities involving Houstonians walking or riding bikes around town, and a general feeling that Houston is still not a particularly easy place to get around on foot or on a bicycle. Jay Blazek Crossley, a policy analyst with Houston Tomorrow, and Regina Garcia, the chair of Bike Houston, shared their suggestions for changes they’d like to see put in place to improve safety.
On this edition of Houston Matters, we turn to the Houston Police Department and the City of Houston’s Department of Public Works and Engineering to learn about immediate efforts to make walking and biking safer, more accessible options for Houstonians. We welcome your questions and comments for Sergeant Ruben Peña, with the Houston Police Department’s Bicycle Administration and Training Unit, and …

Dallas high school bike team’s trailer in police custody

By CLAIRE Z. CARDONA        www.dallasnews.com

What started as a drive home from a high school mountain bike competition ended in a confiscated trailer and possible criminal charges against the team’s coach.
Members of the Dallas High School Composite mountain bike team were returning from Comfort in April when the two coaches were pulled over by Alvarado police for having the wrong registration tags for the trailer.
The officer determined the vehicle identification number had been purposely scratched off, an indicator of stolen property. The trailer was impounded after the coaches unloaded thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment. At a hearing June 8, a judge …

Houston rule changes give pedestrians, cyclists more consideration

By Dug Begley        blog.chron.com

If Houston were the ocean, the city’s public works department would be the giant squid: It lives deep, where few people can see it; only occasionally does it wash ashore to scare people; and it’s capable of grasping anything it wants and dragging it down into a morass of darkness and slow, agonizing death.
The department, the city’s largest in terms of employees, has its tentacles in a lot of functions that largely go unnoticed. It operates in a methodical way that many find cumbersome and resistant to feedback. That sense of isolation has changed in recent months, but public works is still a big glob of rules and …

Developers of Houston Bike Plan ask for Kingwood residents’ opinions on proposal

By Jennifer Summer        www.yourhoustonnews.com

The city of Houston Planning and Development is seeking Kingwood resident’s input on a new Houston Bike Plan in order to a have a clear vision and goals set in place for the plan.
Cathy Halka, the Houston Bike Plan’s project manager, was on hand at the Kingwood Service Association Parks committee meeting Thursday, July 2, in an effort to share more information and garner interest.
They extended the deadline for the public’s input on the plan to July 20 in hopes of getting as much feedback as they could.
“The city is updating the bike plan for the first time in over 20 years,” Halka said at the meeting. “There was a comprehensive update to the plan approved in 1993 so a lot has changed since then. New trails are being built along bayous, new protected bikeways have been …

Patched A Tire and Battled the Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on July 7, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJuly 7, 2015

After watching stage 4 of the Tour de France I went outside to take the garbage can and recycling bin into the garage. My habit is to check the tires on my bike when I am near it. I squeezed the front tire and it was flat. My ride was going to be delayed while I fixed it. I removed the wheel and went inside where it was cooler and quieter in case I had trouble finding the problem. Pulling the tube out of the loosened tire I attached the pump and tried to air up the tube but all I got was hissing air and a limp tube. It didn’t take long to find the hole about 15 inches away from the stem. The hole was about 1/8″. I positioned the tube against the tire to locate the spot on the tire which landed near a cut in the sidewall. The cut was big enough that something needed to be inside the tire over the hole.

Buffing the tube to patch it I opened the glue in the kit but ti was dried out. It’s a good thing the tube did not go flat when I hit something during yesterday’s ride. I remember a loud noise hitting a rim but I don’t remember when it happened. I would’ve had to call my wife to get me but thankfully I made it home yesterday. I went out to the garage to get a new kit and some duct tape to put over the hole in the sidewall. I applied the patch and checked the tire and reassembled everything. Time to get ready to ride.

With the delay I left home at 12:08 to ride the “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood” route. By now the temperature was in the 90’s under a partly cloudy sky. A quick look at the weather website I saw the wind was strong at 14 mph from the SSE with 22 mph gusts. This would be a tough ride on this route. Sections are riding into the wind with no protection from trees or buildings. On the 43.72 mile I paid the price riding into the wind for almost 3 miles on Ramsey Road south of Old Atascocita Road. At times all I could muster was 11 mph with a cadence in the mid 50’s.

When I reached Stroker Road I turned right and got some relief but it was only for a mile or so when I turned left onto Miller Nelson Road back into the wind. It wasn’t quite as bad there with three trees on the left side of the road absorbing some of the wind. I finally made it to Hare Cook Road where I turned right to get back to FM2100. During this stretch my average speed dropped from 14.5 mph to 14.0 mph and I was surprised it didn’t go lower. Once I was on FM2100 going north the wind pushed me along and I got my average speed back up to 14.6 mph by the time I got to the Huffman Chevron 32.1 miles into the ride.

I stayed at the Chevron about 30 minutes eating my snack and Powerade before getting back on FM1960 for the 11+ miles home. Riding west the wind wasn’t too much of a problem until I was on the causeway over Lake Houston with no wind breakers and the traffic adding to the wind. I was relieved to get On Atascocita Shores Drive amongst trees and houses. From there I pedaled home arriving at 3:58. At home I found out the wind was stronger than when I left: SSE 18 mph gusts 25 mph. No wonder it was hard riding into the wind. (These wind speeds are from the IAH airport weather station)

Tomorrow is a day off for doctor appointments. Riding 2 40+ mile days in a row my legs are requesting a rest day.
