About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

2,300-mile bike ride ends in Chicago on Father’s Day to recognize dads

By Sarah Freishtat Chicago Tribune

David Hirsch concedes cycling 2,350 miles for 21 days straight isn’t logical.
But Hirsch did just that, loosely following Route 66 from Santa Monica, Calif., and arriving in Chicago on Father’s Day. He hoped to honor the value of fathers in their children’s lives through his ride.
Hirsch, from the Barrington area, ended his bike ride Sunday morning at Progressive Baptist Church next to U.S. Cellular Field and immediately spent the next hour talking to reporters. He planned to talk to the church congregation and be introduced during the White Sox game. …

… Throughout the ride, Hirsch, 54, was joined for days at a time by supporters — including members of other fatherhood-focused organizations, a Lincolnshire high-school student and the executive director of a German-based fatherhood program who traveled to the U.S. for the ride. His youngest daughter rode along for a week, and the oldest of his five children joined him between Amarillo, Texas, and Oklahoma City. …

Father’s Day Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 21, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 21, 2015

A Father’s Day ride on the “Huffman – Atascocita – Walden” route was a great gift. My father died 10 years ago but he made a lasting impression on me. One that really sticks with me came from when we worked together on a project. He said the job wasn’t finished until the work area was clean and the tools put away. I have the same saying. I miss my father but the memories are still with me.

The weather was hot and sticky; 95 degrees and 58% humidity. An overcast sky kept the sun at bay. I thought of this as a recovery ride from yesterday’s 43+ mile ride. Today I biked 28.53 miles bringing the total for the week to 183.55 miles, June totals 658.92 miles and 2891 miles for the year. 310 miles to reach my goal for June. I will need several 40+ mile rides to get there with 9 days left.

Several families were out biking on the greenbelt trails but I didn’t see any other bicyclists on the roads.

Home weather at the end of the ride

Home weather at the end of the ride

Wind varied greatly from the IAH airport weather to my home weather station. The airport reported 12 mph versus calm when I finished.

Sprint Like A Hare on Hare Cook

Texbiker.net Posted on June 20, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 20, 2015

In the drive to ride 40+ miles I rearranged the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route into “Kingwood – Hare Cook Road – Kingwood”.  I biked 43.54 miles on this route. This route is like the Stroker road one but instead of going west on Stroker Road from Ramsey Road I stayed on Ramsey Road going south until I came to Hare Cook Road. Hare Cook runs east and west and took me to FM2100 and then back to Huffman. I left home at 9:58 and returned at 1:34.

Prior to Hare Cook road I saw a dozen other bikers out enjoying the heat and humidity. They were in groups of two or single riders.

Huffman weather
Huffman weather
Huffman weather
Huffman weather

The roads on this route are smooth asphalt which allowed me to set a good pace. I averaged 15.4 mph overall but for most of the ride after the 15 mile point I averaged 15.5 to 15.7 mph. There was a breeze from the SSE (4 to 6 mph) which put up some resistance when I was riding into it but the other times I more than made up for that.

I thought I was going to have a dog chase free ride until I almost reached the corner of Hare Cook and Miller Wilson Road. A large German Shepherd spotted me from the house and ran to Hare Cook where the property gate was. The gate was closed but there was a big gap between a pole and the gate allowing the dog easy access to the road plus there wasn’t any fence just a ditch with some standing water. He started barking as soon as he spotted me and I sped up. I had a good lead on him and when I made the corner I looked in my mirror to see him stop in the road. If he knew I was turning onto Miller Wilson Road he could’ve caught me but thankfully dogs are not telepathic. This helped my speed and I was glad this was with the wind at my back rather than into a headwind.

Once I reached FM2100 I rode north to Huffman for a 40 minute rest stop at the Chevron station. From there it was about 11 miles to home. The sun was shinning to the west but to the east and south the sky was full of clouds and looked like it might rain. As I write this I can again hear thunder in the distance and some rain is falling here. This was one of those rides if I got caught in the rain I am not sure I could tell the difference. The sweat was flowing so much I was wet all over anyway. I rinsed my gloves at the Chevron station and dried them on some paper towels but they were still wet when I got ready to leave. I was thinking of washing my Jeep when I got home but the rain and thunder delayed that.

Mileage standings after today’s ride:

  • 155.02 miles this week
  • 630.39 miles so far in June
  • 2863 miles year to date
