About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A reminder: Staying safe on the hike-and-bike trail

by Pam LeBlanc        fitness.blog.austin360.com

Last fall, a runner died after she collided with a cyclist on a recreational trail that winds through downtown Dallas.
Police determined that no one was at fault, and no charges were filed. But the incident shook the community, and showed that trail etiquette can have life-or-death consequences.
In Austin, more than 100 miles of trails, including the 10 most-loved miles that encircle Lady Bird Lake, twist through the city. In recent years, those trails have grown increasingly congested. Runners and cyclists, tourists and nature walkers, sometimes two or three abreast, share a trail also populated by strollers, dogs, a serenading musician or two and the occasional squirrel that darts across the path.
According to the Trail Foundation, the nonprofit group that works to maintain it, the trail around Lady Bird Lake records an estimated 1.5 million visits each year.
The challenge is to figure out now – rather than after someone gets …

Investigation into Fatal Crash at 1700 Antoine

www.houstongovnewsroom.org

Houston police are investigating a fatal crash at 1700 Antoine about 7:10 p.m. on Monday (June 15).
The male victim was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  His identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Kung and Officer C. Washington reported:
The victim was riding a bicycle northbound on Antoine when he and the driver of a white Isuzu box truck both stopped at a red light at the intersection of Long Point.  When the light turned green, the Isuzu’s driver proceeded through the intersection, striking the bicyclist.  The driver remained at …

Boy Scout turned Soldier aims for gold at DOD Warrior Games

By    Shannon Collins         www.army.mil

EL PASO, Texas (Army News Service, June 15, 2015) — When fifth grader and Boy Scout Stefan Leroy watched the World Trade Center towers fall during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he knew then he wanted to serve his country.
“We really saw the world change, and then thinking about service, commitment to yourself, your community and your country, the Army’s kind of a natural place to go from there,” said Sgt. Stefan Leroy, a cavalry scout, who now serves at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Maryland.
Years later, Leroy found himself carrying a fellow Soldier to a …

SA Update: Vision Zero: Making San Antonio’s Streets Safe (Rivard Report)

by Matthew        bike4heck.com

I’ve been a fan of the Rivard Report for sometime and hope to contribute to them someday. I’ve been asked before since starting the blog.
This year we had a run off election here in San Antonio. We had a interim mayor Ivy Taylor ever since Julian Castro moved up to Washington DC. (Julian Castro was very pro-cycling) During the race there where three major candidates and about 12 others that didn’t have a chance. After speaking with a connection at Bike Texas a state based Bicycle advocacy group I learned that only one candidate asked for their assistance to help develop his …

Tour de Trash

by Bill Cullins        bcullins.blogspot.com

This is the season for large multi-day cycling races such as the Tour of California, Tour of Italy (‘Giro d’Italia’), the upcoming Tour de France and similar events.
The regions and towns these events pass through take great pride in showcasing the beauty of their areas to the millions of potential tourists who watch these races in person or on television.
Unfortunately, San Angelo does not have a large televised multi-day cycling event and that’s probably for the best.
If we had a local cycling race of that type, the only logical name would be the ‘Tour de Trash’.
The amount of intentionally-discarded litter that decorates many roadsides, parking lots and …

Bike Upgrades

by Ray Garza        rgvcycling.com

Recently I’ve made some changes to my bike. My trusty 2013 Roubaix Apex Comp has been replaced with an updated version. I am now a proud owner of a 2015 Specialized Roubaix SL4 Comp Ultegra Di2. I saw this bike being displayed at my favorite local bike shop (LBS), Bicycle World RGV in McAllen and immediately loved the paint job. Finally Specialized splashes color on their bikes. I am tired of the all white, all black, or shades of grey. To me those are lazy, unimaginative paint jobs. This bike also had electronic shifting too! I knew I had to get it for my Freddyness (is that a real word?) in me. Before I could, I would need to sell my existing bike.
My bike had 9200 solid miles on it plus my first century ride (see Wildflower Centurion), so it has a special place in my heart. It’s all stock except for the Richie handle bar, Crank Brothers Candy pedals and …

Obscure trails frame the latest battle near White Rock Lake

By CLAIRE Z. CARDONA and ROY APPLETON        www.dallasnews.com

The trails are difficult to find if you don’t know where to look.
They wind across a sloping patch of city park land, through 42 acres of shaded woods and open fields thick these days with vegetation.
Narrow and rutted, grassy and subtle, the paths help raccoons, bobcats and other wildlife roam. People, too.
In recent weeks, the woodlands of Flag Pole Hill have become the focus of another clash over change near White Rock Lake.
A resident of the White Rock Valley neighborhood wanted to add a trail there. His idea attracted public …

The Collin Classic 2015

by Johnny Guzman        bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

I have been riding regularly for the past few months in preparation for the Collin Classic Bicycle Rally, held annually in Mckinney, Texas. The Collin Classic has three route choices including a metric century of about 64 miles. Being that I had to head out of town almost immediately after the ride, I opted for the 46 mile distance. I averaged 18.5 miles an hour for the whole ride, finishing in 2:42 and so far it is the fastest average speed that I have logged for the distance that I rode. This year I bought a new road bike from Bikes Direct to try to set a …

Rain Coming Our Way

Texbiker.net Posted on June 15, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 15, 2015

Supposedly a tropical storm is headed to Texas. The weekend weather forecast had rain for today but each day it moved to later in the day. I thought I wouldn’t get to bike today but the forecast changed. I wanted to ride today before it arrived so I left home at 9:59 and got back home at 1:03. The humidity was 74% making for a heavy perspiration ride. My gloves were soaked when I arrived at the Shell station at Cumberland Blvd. I took some paper towels and tried to dry them out some but my arms were so wet the sweat rolled down to the gloves. I got back on the bike and headed to the Stripes station for a break.

I rode the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route to stay above the weather to the south and east. The threatened rain was here yet but I didn’t want to take a chance plus I wanted to vary the routes. For variety I changed the first 7 miles biking through Forest Cove. This added to the overall ride coming up to 34.82 miles instead of the usual 32 miles or so.

The ride was calm with no dog chases, smooth roads and no wet roads. The weather was overcast to mostly cloudy. The temperature was 89 when I finished and the wind was light at 3 to 5 mph from the NNE. A couple of times the sky looked threatening but only once did I get about 10 rain drops and it stopped. There was far more moisture from my sweating.

For some reason I had difficulty getting my average speed up to 15.0 mph. I finally got there around the 23 mile mark and held it there even increasing it to 15.1 mph for a short period until I had to make some stops for traffic lights. Slowly building up speed from the stop pulled the average down and then I rode to get it back up. The final average speed was 14.8 mph.

At the Stripes station I took a break to dry off some, eat snacks and drink Gatorade. I laid my gloves on some paper towels to dry them off some for the final 11 miles home.
