About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Recovery Ride on Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on June 10, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 10, 2015

I rode an easy ride over the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route. I modified this route slightly adding about 2 miles by going to Kingwood Drive and reconnecting with the usual route. This made the ride 35.28 miles long. I declared this a recovery ride because my legs needed to recover from yesterday’s longer ride and the winding streets for the first 10 miles lowered my average speed. Overall the average speed came in at 14.3 mph but I did get it up to 14.5 mph briefly.

Going through Oakhurst I saw another biker which is unusual there.

The rest break came at 23.8 miles at the Stripes store on FM1314 and Valley Ranch Parkway. I noticed on the last ride by Stripes that their 32 oz fountain drink is $.99 plus tax. I like that price and they have a shady place to rest and eat my snacks. Fruit punch Gatorade with ice helped to cool me down after riding in the sun.

At Cumberland Crossing the Grand Parkway FM1314 overpass still awaits the beams and the lanes are narrowed to one side of the center of the full road width. I could see some construction equipment moving around so maybe the beams will arrive some day soon.

The weather forecast for today mentioned a possible rain shower but it disappeared by the time I got back home at 2:08. Tomorrow’s forecast again includes a chance of rain in the late afternoon. I should be finished with my ride by then. I started at 11:03 due to watching the Critérium du Dauphiné live. Today’s stage started later than the previous ones. I haven’t seen the start time for tomorrow’s stage.

City council Meeting

West Texas Cycling Association

Date: June 11, 2015
Location: Lubbock, TX
Contact:
Details: There will be a City Council meeting on Thursday, June 11 @ 5:15 pm. One of the meeting topics will address the budget line item for updating and improving the Master Bicycle Plan (MBP). The Lubbock Board of Health will have a presentation in support of the MBP, and we were encouraged by Wood Franklin, the Director of Public Works, to come to the meeting so the City Council Members know there is a lot of support for this plan. Please wear a bicycle jersey so that we stand out as a group. So many times in the past, the bicycle community has started an impassioned push for infrastructure improvements in the city, but have lost enthusiasm through the slow process of government. If you cannot attend the council meeting on …

15 Things For 2015 #TXCX

by joeyTWOwheels        texascx.com

108 days until the first race of the #TXCX season!
We.
Are.
Stoked.
If you caught the schedule, you’ll notice a couple firsts this year:
we start in San Antonio AND Houston;
plus we start one week ahead of years past (in September instead of October).
It’s going to be hot, like Africa hot.
So let’s get into this before the sweat hits the keyboard.
15. Nobody will be at the first race
OK, some people will go. But starting early means that those die-hard road racers will be vying for the coveted prize of best fast guy/gal in the state on skinny wheels that weekend at Ft. Hood. Unless, of course, they are ready for something …

New Facilities, New Connections!

bikeabledallas.com

I was out of town most of last week and while I was gone, the striping crew went to town on installing shared lane markings.
(I know everyone is clamoring for more actual bike lanes. We have a slew of those in the works, but they take more time to clear all the political and policy hurdles we must contend with. So hang in there, it’s coming.)
Here’s a map of all the new (and existing) bicycle facilities in the Uptown/Knox/East Dallas area (click on map for larger image). Many of the new facilities are intended to provide linkages to the trail network– in this case, the …

Mountain Workout Over The Tracks

Texbiker.net Posted on June 9, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 9, 2015

Mountain workout today. Well, not really. The “FM1960 to FM686 – Back” route goes up and down the railroad overpass east of Huffman on FM1960. Around here the overpass is about as hilly as it gets. I was out of the saddle to get up the hill going east and repeated that on the return ride going west. Thankfully the road is relative new concrete with smooth asphalt approaches. To get to the smooth asphalt though I rode 1 mile of chip’n seal from the Liberty/Harris County line. Going east the wind assisted me but going back to the west the wind was in my face though not blowing strongly it provided enough resistance to tax my legs.

The ride was 41.16 miles long, slightly longer than before because I added a section in Walden. This additional street circles around with houses on my right fronting Lake Houston. There are several new homes under construction. I got lost once before I found the right street on a previous ride.

Weather was good. 93 degrees when I got back home at 1:38. Mostly cloudy sky though at the start it wasn’t as cloudy. The wind was light to calm.

I took a longer than normal break at the Huffman Chevron; 37 minutes. Also I drank a 44 oz Powerade since I drank all of my water bottle and it was hot. Perspiration was flowing freely when I stopped. During the ride whenever I dipped my chin to the ride a stream of water hit my shoe and the pavement. At the break I was at 29.4 miles into the ride with 11+ miles left.

Two other bikers were out today. The first one rode several hundred yards in front of me going east on FM1960 over Lake Houston, The other biker was going west not too far from the start of the causeway. The biker in front of me turned onto Fairlake Drive while I continued on FM1960.

The average speed was 15.3 mph most of the ride. After the rest stop in Huffman the average slowly dropped because my legs were tired. At the end of the ride the average speed was 14.9 mph. I held it to 15.2 mph until 38.8 miles when I was weaving through Kingwood streets.

Mileage standings: 77.87 miles this week, 322.8 miles this month, 2555 miles this year.
