About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Combining Roads for a New Route

Texbiker.net Posted on June 8, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 8, 2015

Combining roads I rode before into a new route produced today’s route, “New Caney – Casey Ridge – Roman Forest – 242- FM1314 – New Caney”. In the quest for variety I came up with this route. I wasn’t sure how many miles this would be but while I was riding I did some guesses of around 37 miles. It turned out to be 36.72 miles. All the roads are north and west of the Grand Parkway construction. Some roads are the smoothest though. riding through Casey Ridge the streets in some sections are a series of asphalt patches. Nothing dangerous but I was frequently out of the saddle to minimize the bumps. From Casey ridge I entered the southeast corner of Roman Forest and the streets smoothed out. I created a long route name to differentiate this from routes using the same roads.

FM1485 shoulders narrow in a few places going east from New Caney. I think this is a result of the recent resurfacing and line painting. A few of the narrow spots hug the guardrail over drainage ditches in corners. The rest of the shoulder averages 4 feet and is smooth.

With good roads I pedaled around 18 to 20 mph except when I encountered some small inclines which seemed to also be going into the light breeze. Overall I averaged 15.7 mph but at times I averaged as much as 16.0 mph. Most of the ride averaged 15.8 or 15.9 mph. The average speed dropped to 15.7 when I stopped at the Mobil station at US59 and FM1485 to get ice and top off my water bottle for the drive home. This was across US59 from the Brookshire Brothers store parking lot where I parked the Jeep.

ON SH 242 about 2 miles west of US59 I looked in my rear view mirror when I heard a siren approaching. A motorcycle officer was coming from the rear. When he was beside me he warned me about a wide load coming. The shoulder is about 6 feet wide where this took place and I moved to the right edge and slowed. A convoy passed with a heavy duty truck pulling a trailer with many small wheels and a truck pushing the rear of the trailer. A huge windpower turbine took up most of the flatbed trailer. Not too long after the first one another passed me. Oncoming traffic crowded to the left shoulder to give the convoy clearance. The trucks disappeared in the distance. When I got to the SH 242 and FM1485 junction the convoy was parked at the Chevron store. I went inside to refill my water bottle and saw everyone was taking a lunch break. Here are some pictures of the convoy.

It several minutes for me to eat a trail mix bar, whole grain fruit bar and drink some ice water. I figured the convoy would continue on SH 242 where I was going so I wanted to get a head start to maybe avoid them by the time I got to FM1314. I rode SH 242 and got to FM1314 before the convoy. I took a left onto FM1314 for the ride back to New Caney. No more wide loads came my way.

Gene Campbell Road took me from FM1314 to FM1485 and the last 2+ miles to the Brookshire Brothers parking lot. The lane going to FM1485 on Gene Campbell Road needs some repairs. All of the heavy trucks going to and from Walmart and the other businesses are breaking up the asphalt requiring me to stay near the center line in several places.

I left Brookshire Brothers at 10:59 and returned at 1:39. The weather was hot (91 degrees) with partly cloudy sky but the wind was light most of the ride.

My legs did great during the ride. There are a few inclines on this route but nothing serious.

Theft: Bike rack cleaned out in Downtown Fort Worth

by ZedHead88        www.reddit.com

I am new to cycling and was very excited to get a couple nice bikes with my girlfriend when moving into the Firestone Apartments Downtown. Sadly, I am away on business for 25 days in Australia.. but my girlfriend notified me our bikes, along with all bikes on the rack, were all stole. That’s about 25+ bikes!! Our bikes became a way of life, we grew to really love them.. So my girlfriend is pretty upset, especially since i’m not there to help.
Our block of the community is gated with cameras and normally very secure. Lately they have been messing with the gate system installing a new key fob way to enter the building. Because of this, they …

Deer On Fairlake Drive

Texbiker.net Posted on June 7, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 7, 2015

I saw two deer on Fairlake Drive during today’s ride on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. I also saw 5 other bikers along the route. Even with it being summer type heat we bicyclists and deer are out and about. 97 degrees when I got home on my weather station. I think that is a few degrees higher than it might be though. The weather sensor is in full sun and the internal fan may not be working like it should. I will check into that this afternoon.

After yesterday’s Spindletop Spin ride I continue the quest for miles to reach 968 miles for June. With today’s 31.33 miles the month’s total is 244.92. I have a ways to go but that is the most miles I biked in one week this year. The sunny rain-free weather plus hot temperatures are helping me. Average speed today was 15.1 mph with a maximum average speed of 15.4 mph. I thought the 51.8 miles on Saturday might make my legs slow but it wasn’t the case. The wind was light and I rode between 17 to 20 mph most of the time. The stops and starts are what make the average speed difficult to increase.

The break at the Huffman Chevron was shorter than normal today. The Powerade on the fountain machine is out so I just drank ice water from my water bottle and with a whole grain fruit bar.

VETERAN RIDE: Navy vet’s 1,000 mile bicycle ride for charity culminates on Island

By PAMELA CODY        portisabelsouthpadre.com

Jonathan Cathey, a Texas-born Navy veteran, completed an arduous journey not many could finish: travelling over a 1,000 miles across rugged Texas terrain, from the Panhandle to the tip of Texas on South Padre Island. No big deal, right? Well, imagine doing it on a bicycle.
That’s exactly what Cathey did to raise money for his non-profit startup organization called Armadillo Adventures. Cathey initially planned the trip to celebrate his 40th birthday and to commemorate his late father, who retired to the Rio Grande Valley in 2008, only to die shortly thereafter. The former Navy vet realized he had an opportunity to do much more on his journey. “I’m a big fan of outdoor activities, whether it be rock climbing, mountain biking, fly fishing or …
