About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling News June 1st

Responsibility

texasbikeracing.com

If you have ever ventured into the Wild West soap opera of Texas bike racing, and the anonymous txbra.org forums (yes, they still exist, and they’re just as glorious and horrifying as ever), you have likely seen a mixture of backstabbing comments, trolling, and genuine discussion. Following the State Criterium Championships last week, an interesting post regarding racer safety, as well as the responsibility of bike race promoters and bike racers, spawned a heated conversation.
Here, Jordan Oroshiba, 21, a category 2 bike racer, full-time student, and owner of Cadence Coaching, wades in with his personal thoughts on racer responsibility.
Memorial Day in Texas is for criterium racing, and the last couple years also for rain. With our El Nino summer in full swing, Memorial Day weekend saw two apocalyptic rain storms sweep through Texas, turning much of the drought ravaged state into a …

6 bike share cities you should watch (because we just gave them grant money to focus on equity)

April Corbin, PeopleForBikes equity writer

Equity in bike share isn’t going to happen on its own.
Innovators will have to experiment with strategies and efforts in order to find best practices. Luckily, there are at least half a dozen cities in the United States ready to do this.
We would know. The Better Bike Share Partnership announced today that it has awarded nearly $375,000 in grants to bike share operators and community organizations that are working to make bike share programs more equitable. The Partnership has also funded an academic research team that will look at data and equity outcomes in Philadelphia, which launched their bike share system Indego in late April.
This first round of grant money is part of $900,000 that The JPB Foundation-funded Better Bike Share Partnership will award over the …

6 Bike Storage Solutions You Can Build Right Now

By Jeremy Cook        makezine.com

When a bike is in its normal storage place, however, a dedicated place to keep it (or them) can make that location much more pleasing. If you’d rather not simply buy one, these six DIY bike storage methods should give you some ideas for how to make your own. …

by Joe Hyde        sanangelolive.com

The City Council will review the results of a consultant’s $185,000 road condition study of the entire city on Tuesday morning at their regularly-scheduled meeting. In the agenda packet, city staff provided a layered, Adobe PDF of the results of the study.

Great Start For June Biking

Texbiker.net Posted on June 1, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJune 1, 2015

I wasn’t planning on biking today but things changed and I biked the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. The weather was much better than what we endured last week.

Home weather start of ride
Home weather start of ride
Huffman weather during a break
Huffman weather during a break
Home weather at the end of the ride
Home weather at the end of the ride

The breeze was cooling and the humidity was much lower than last week when all of the rain was being sucked back into the sky.

I wasn’t able to ride with speed today. The wind speed wasn’t that much but my legs didn’t have the energy to keep above 17 or 18 mph most of the ride. It took 22 miles to get the average speed to 15.0 mph. Once I got it there I was able to maintain it until 31 miles and then it dropped as I rode back home through Kingwood.

The rest stop in Huffman was enjoyable sitting under the canopy with a light breeze blowing through. Watching all of the traffic makes you wonder where everyone is going. Retirement puts a different perspective as you watch people move about.

Starting off a new month hopefully we get some dry weather. My goal for June is 968 miles, the same as June 2014. Last year I rode 27 days averaging 36 miles per day. I hope the weather cooperates this year like it did last year.

Spokes bring hope to needy students

By Kyp Shillam        www.crowleystar.net

Third-grader Arthur Hernandez said it best.
“I think my luck has turned around,” said the lanky 9-year-old as he waited for a gift he never dreamed he’d get. “I’ve never had a bike before.”
As row after row of new bicycles were lined up in the Poynter Elementary School gymnasium, Arthur’s excitement grew.
“I don’t know how to ride a bike, but I know I want that green one,” he said, pointing to a bright green BMX which was obviously …

Walnut Creek PARD user survey and conditions update

by Tree Magnet        www.bikemojo.com

Took the family out for a stroll at WC today to check out the carnage and I saw several of these survey signs at various trail heads. I opened up the survey and it was a basic “what do you want in this park?” type questionnaire. I did notice that when it asked “Why do you come to this park?” that “Mountain Biking” was not an option. I filled it in the ‘other’ category but that was a bit of a bummer. If the PARD is asking the park users what they want, let’s tell them. If they only run this survey while …
