About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lots of US Flags

Texbiker.net Posted on May 25, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMay 25, 2015

Memorial Day arrived but the rain forecasted did not. I left earlier today at 9:46 with the Giro d’Italia on a rest day. To be different I rode he “Huffman – Atascocita – Walden” (reverse of Atascocita – Walden – Huffman) for variety of a sorts. Amazing how the same roads in reverse look different. I was on the look out for homes with flags out and found these on Atascocita Shores Drive. Lots of flags along the route. Last night when we were going out to eat there was a pickup truck beside us with a bunch of flags to put out.

5-25-2015 Memorial Day Flags-3
5-25-2015 Memorial Day flags-1

In years past someone put out signs along FM2100 in memory or honoring service people but this year no signs on the section I biked on.

The wind was challenging today whenever I rode to the south. I wasn’t able to build up my average speed to more than 15.1 mph over the 31.88 mile route. I saw several other bicyclists during the ride.

Only a brief stop at the Chevron station today to refill my water bottle, wipe sweat from my eyes (humidity was 72%) and blow my nose. I couldn’t go south on FM2100 anyway because a train was going through.

Tomorrow’s forecast looks favorable for biking.

Pedernales 2-Way Cycle Track criticized

The link includes an informative video of a drive near the facility.
Though a lot of the complaints from drivers amount to not liking the space being carved out and parking problems (showing the sense of motorist entitlement we so often contend with), another major part of the complaint comes down to — the facility makes it harder not to hit bicyclists when you are driving around it.  This design feature is part of why MUTCD standards argue against physical separation of bike lanes on roadways.  The design is creating dangerous conflicts in …

Waiting, Waiting Then Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on May 23, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMay 23, 2015

Wait. The word for today. I was ready to leave around 10:30 this morning but rain was to the north and south on the routes I wanted to ride. The rain was scattered and chose to sit over the roads I planned on riding. I checked the radar several times and the rain slowly moved to the north. I chose to ride the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route to the southeast. I got ready and rolled out at 11:56. The streets were mostly dry in Kingwood but as I rode south into Atascocita I could see puddles from recent showers. By the time I got to FM1960 to cross Lake Houston the roads were dry with no puddles. The humidity was heavy though at 80% or so.

Today I biked Old Atascocita Road east to Ramsey Road south. Normally I go south on FM2100 to Stroker Road and then go east and north. The wind was brutal from FM2100 to Ramsey Road and Ramsey Road south to Stroker Road going west. I was riding into a stiff wind and my speed slowed to 12 – 13 mph. When I crossed FM2100 I noticed a long line of cars waiting to enter onto FM2100. This was unusual because Old Atascocita Road has almost no traffic. The cars were coming from the north on Ramsey Road turning on Old Atascocita Road. I am not sure was caused this but by the time I came to the Old Atascocita Road – FM2100 intersection on the return leg the traffic was gone.

After I reached Stroker Road the wind was not a problem turning into a nice tailwind pushing me north as I rode on FM2100. I raised my average speed from 14.5 mph to 15.2 mph when I took a break at the Chevron station in Huffman. My legs needed the rest stop to recover from the wind earlier. I brought my snacks and got a Powerade to wash them down. I rode 27.7 miles when stopped at the Chevron. The ride west on FM1960 was helped by the wind and I maintained a good pace of 18 to 20 mph. When I was at the Chevron I looked at the weather radar and saw rain west of Porter so I needed to get home before it moved my way. I made it home without any rain. I got home at 3:05. The wind had died down from when I left. At the start of the ride it was from the SE at 15 mph with 23 mph gusts but now was from the SE at 5 mph. The temperature was 83 under overcast sky.

Rain is in the forecast for Sunday and Monday. biking will probably not happen. Sunday, if it rains, I will substitute watching the Giro d’Italia which I have been watching each day on BeIN Sports (channel 392 on Dish). Monday is a Giro rest day.

Standings with today’s ride: 146.49 miles this week, 400.76 miles this month, 2070 miles this year.
