About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

3-29-2022 Cervelo Caledonia Ramsey Road-1
3-29-2022 Cervelo Caledonia at a Ramsey Road Bridge
Lynksey Helex at a Kingwood Lake

Bicyclist on Arlington trail captures bobcat and coyote encounter

By Carol Christian        www.chron.com

Bobcats are a common sight in Arlington’s River Legacy Parks, park regulars say, and the River Legacy Foundation even posts a Bobcat Blog.
Coyotes are found in every state except Hawaii, according to the Humane Society.

Houston celebrates Bike to Work Day with easier access for cyclists

By Rebecca Spera        abc13.com

Video

HOUSTON (KTRK) — Houston celebrates Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 15, and now, pedaling our way around town is more feasible than ever before.
Hao Le started riding his bike to work in 2006, and he realized quickly it was a smart plan. “I actually will get home faster sometimes on a bike than in a car with all the traffic jams,” he said.
Besides saving time, Hao also says it helps his overall well-being. “It is everything from de-stressing from the day, exercising, and just having fun.”
He usually bikes one way, and now that METRO allows bikes on buses, he checks his bike, too. He says it’s incredibly simple to put a bike on the bus. “It’s one lever; you put it on your …

Andrea Fisher’s tips for the busy athlete

by djcurtin        bicyclesportshop.wordpress.com

It’s not easy to balance life, work, training, racing, and everything else that comes on a day-to-day basis. It often seems that that there are those that make it appear effortless, and the rest of us trying to cram it all in and wondering if we’re doing enough and doing it well.
Bicycle Sport Shop Cycling Club sponsor, coach, athlete, and mom recently gave a talk at the Lamar store: “The Time Sensitive Athlete” and there were a number of take aways from the evening that are worth sharing. Whether you’re just starting to try to figure out how to do it all, or you …

Energy Corridor Bike To Work Day 2015

Cycling Space City

Today makes two years in a row I didn’t commute via bike on Bike To Work Day.  Last year George Bush was flooded and this year there is supposed to be lightning in the PM.  I don’t mind riding in the rain, and kind of enjoy it actually, but after a too close for comfort ride in a lightning storm two years ago I am now extremely gun shy about riding if …

Texas Bicycling News Roundup May 13th

Texbiker.net Posted on May 13, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMay 13, 2015

Executive Director’s Note – May 2015

by jorge        www.nationalmtb.org

With spring league racing in full swing in California, Texas, New York and Alabama this past month and our fall league holding coach training, we have been very busy! In addition to NICA related activities, we were also happy to participate at the 25th anniversary of the Sea Otter Classic and it was very interesting to see more youth racing than ever before! What is the reason behind the increased participation? Simply put, NICA.
Interscholastic cycling is booming as a result of the hard work the NICA League Directors and National Office staff have put in over the past five years to inspire, train and support coaches to work in their respective communities to form school based teams. The cat is out of the bag and we are currently reviewing proposals from five new regions that all want to join the movement. While having demand for …

Friday is ‘Bike to Work Day’ in Houston

by Ken Hoffman        www.houstonchronicle.com

A group of cyclists wait at a light at the intersection of Bagby and McKinney Streets on the 2014 Bike to Work Day. This year, the downtown ride will be on Friday.
Friday is “Bike to Work Day” in Houston.
I’ll be jumping on my Dutch 3-speed bike, meeting the West U group on the corner of Buffalo Speedway and Sunset, and heading downtown at 6:30 a.m.
Huh? What are we, farmers?
Meanwhile, groups of pedal pushers from East End, Near Northside, Heights, Midtown, Montrose and many more parts of Houston will make a similar commute to downtown.
“Bike to Work Day” is organized by BikeHouston. There are other rides on other days in …

Rolling Coal

by Bike Noob        bikenoob.com

The Bike Hugger Facebook page pointed me to an interesting piece today from Jalopnik — it seems that in New Jersey, they’ve outlawed the practice of “rolling coal.” That’s when a big ‘ol, jacked up four-wheel drive pickup passes you while blasting a cloud of black smoke back in your face. It’s about as funny as the jerks who interrupt female TV reporters by yelling a particularly nasty obscenity.

Here’s hoping you don’t run into something like this.
It’s happened to me only once — just about a year ago. I had made the mistake of taking a major state highway to get back to the start of my ride quicker. Even though I was in the clearly-marked bike lane, some …

Louisiana native rides Tour du Rouge to honor fallen friend

By Adam Butler Ducote        www.donaldsonvillechief.com

Adam Butler Ducote poses with family members as he crosses the finish line during the Tour du Rouge’s stop in Gonzales last week.
GONZALES
The Tour du Rouge started in 2009 with the intent of raising money for, and then riding through, Gulf Coast communities affected by major weather events such as Hurricane Katrina.
I became interested in the Tour du Rouge because I care deeply for the people and cultures of southern Louisiana, my ancestral home, and I want to do something to give back to the place that bore me.
On May 3-8, I rode my bike from Houston, Texas, down along the Gulf Coast, up to my hometown and then …

Designing a Bike for the Perfect Commute

By Nathan Hurst        makezine.com

Tomorrow is National Bike to Work Day, and legions (hopefully) of cyclists will take to the street who might not otherwise. But this begs the question; Why don’t they bike to work every day? That was the impetus for Denny the bike, and indeed, all of the bikes entered in the Bike Design Project. But Denny won.
Denny is powered by Intel Edison, a SRAM E-Matic electric assist hub, and you. Two of Denny’s designers, Matt Schoenholz and John Mabry, walked us through the latest version at MakerCon 2015.
The first thing you notice about Denny will likely depend on whether …

New Segundo Barrio mural honors “Father Bicycle”

By Gustavo Aguirre        www.elpasoproud.com

A new  mural is up honoring a Jesuit priest better known in the Sun City as “Father Bicycle”.
The mural was commissioned to honor Father Harold Rahm, who served as an assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Downtown El Paso from 1952 to 1964.
During his time here, Rahm would ride his bicycle around the Segundo Barrio talking and playing with kids in an effort to get them out of gangs.

How did Texas rank in list of bike friendliest states?

by Pam LeBlanc        fitness.blog.austin360.com

Just as we were celebrating Austin’s ranking as 14th most bike-friendly city in the country on BetterDoctor’s list of bike-friendly cities comes news of Texas’ dismal state-wide performance on another list.
The League of American Bicyclists’ this week released its annual list of Bicycle Friendly States, and Texas came in 30th out of 50. (See the whole list here.)
Not good, but not surprising, either. Have you tried to ride a bike through Houston, El Paso or Dallas lately?
Texas’ 2015 rank is actually up a wee bit from 2014, when it ranked 33rd in the country. But it’s …

The Web Monkey Speaks: The Bigotry of Wilderness

By: Vernon Felton        www.bikemag.com

Do bikes belong in wilderness areas?

America needs wilderness. In an era of “clean coal”, tar sands and fracking our environment can use all the help it can get. The United States is a massive chunk of dirt, true, but once you account for all the private property, cities, roads, shopping malls and suburban sprawl, what you really have is a hodge-podge of fragmented and fragile ecosystems. The Wilderness Act tries to stave off that problem by preserving lands in their wild and pristine state. That’s a great thing.
What’s not so great, however, is that, since 1984, the Wilderness Act has also been used to kick mountain bikes off of public lands. And not because mountain biking has ever been proven to have more of an impact than other trail users; for the record, it never has. Instead, bikes were banned in `84, and continue to be banned today, because a faction of hikers and horseback riders simply don’t like mountain bikers. They don’t like the way we dress. They …

New Bicycle Friendly State Ranking Released

www.bicycle.net

Washington is No. 1 for Eighth Year Running
Washington, D.C. — Embargoed until May 11, 2015, 9 a.m. Eastern — On the first day of National Bike To Work Week, the League of American Bicyclists has released its 2015 Bicycle Friendly State ranking.
For the eighth year in a row, Washington continues to lead the nation, but states like Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Utah moved up the ranking in 2015, shaking up the top 20.
“We’re encouraged to see measurable progress and improvement in many states, including Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Utah,” said League President Andy Clarke. “We hope to see continued improvements as more statewide leaders recognize and invest in the many benefits bicycling has to offer.”
Utah made the jump from #8 to #5 this year. The state adopted a Bicycle Master Plan in 2014, setting inter-agency goals for inclusion and support of biking and walking infrastructure in transportation projects. …

Selective Enforcement

Bike Noob        bikenoob.com

One of the members of my cycling club sent out an email to the group the other day, warning of police ticketing cyclists who failed to stop before turning right on a red light. It seems there were three squad cars, all writing out tickets.
Now, this kind of thing has gone on before, but I haven’t heard a lot about it in several years. And what struck me as odd about this instance was that it took place on a Wednesday morning, at about 11 a.m. That doesn’t strike me as a busy biking time, but apparently there were enough wayward bikers out there to keep the police busy for a …
