About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

HPD officer hits, kills bicyclist in southeast Houston

abc13.com        VIDEO

HOUSTON (KTRK) — The intersection of MLK Boulevard and Reed Road in southeast Houston is completely closed after a Houston Police Department cruiser hit and killed a man on a bicycle around 4:40am this morning.
Houston police say Officer R. Scott was traveling westbound on Reed Road and had the green light when they say a man on a bicycle heading southbound on MLK biked into Reed Road and collided with Officer Scott.
We know the officer’s squad car lights were not on and investigators are working to see if the bicyclist had any lights on his bike. Witnesses tell us the officer was traveling fast. HPD …

Richard DeGarmo seeks financial support following cancer surgery

By VeloNews.com

American cycling pioneer Richard DeGarmo, a former president the United States Cycling Federation — the precursor to USA Cycling — and director of the Tour of Texas, is seeking financial help following surgery for liver cancer.
“Richard gave so many of my generation a fabulous month-long series of races that helped us not only jump start the season, but also our careers,” Olympic champion Connie Carpenter Phinney said. “He provided us host accommodations so that we could stay and race for the entire month of March. He was way ahead of his time and simply loved the sport of cycling.
“[He] gave many of us a forum to race and develop our talents. It will be a very long road and he is in …

Houston lawyer raises more than $100,000 for charity bike ride

by Lindsay Stafford Mader        blog.texasbar.com

The morning after severe thunderstorms and hail caused the first phase of the BP MS 150 charity bike ride to be canceled, cool and clear skies kicked off day two of the annual event, which is typically a 180-mile trip from Houston to Austin. Because of the weather on Saturday, participants started on Sunday at the mid-way point. For the fourth year in a row, Houston lawyer Stephen Susman was the top fundraiser out of approximately 13,000 participants, bringing in $118,009. He was part of his firm Susman Godfrey’s team, named “Swift Justice,” which has raised more than $1.1 million since it …

City of Tyler seeks funding for bike trails

by FAITH HARPER        www.tylerpaper.com

Tyler Bicycle Club cyclists periodically pedal to Faulkner Park to cruise down mountain bike trails together, but the ride can be dangerous.
“There’s no way to get to Faulkner Park other than taking Broadway, which is crazy or Old Jacksonville, which is crazier than Broadway,” Elite Bicycles Store Manager Joe Self said.
The destination could be made safer for cyclists if the city of Tyler receives a grant for federal funds to make new trails to connect the Rose Rudman Trail to Faulkner Park and add a regional trail from …

New Bike Trails Get the Green Light

By Jacqueline Sarkissian        www.cbs19.tv

Video

TYLER (KYTX) – City Council gave the go ahead to apply for a federal grant through Texas Department of Transportation that would expand its biking trails.
Bikers are pleased after hearing Tyler City Council approves more trails in the community. One biker says this is long overdue.
Manager of Elite Bicycle Joe Self says, “especially where they’re talking about adding it along the Old Jacksonville Corridor that’s an extremely dangerous area for cyclists and even drivers.” Self says there has been many accidents at this location.
“There was a kid that was killed last year right where they’re talking about adding the route and also we had one of our local riders get hit right there …

Bike Routes, Bike Lanes, and Signed Routes

www.mansfieldtexas.gov

Bicycles may be operated on all roadways, except where prohibited. However certain roads may be more desirable for use due to low traffic speeds and volumes and do not necessitate a separated bike facility. These roadways can be designated as shared lane bike routes with route signage and pavement markings to designate shared use of the travel lanes. Shared lanes should not be used as a substitute for conventional bike lanes when space permits.
Typical Use
On streets with low traffic volume (=3,000 ADT)
On streets with low travel speeds (= 35 mph)
To fill a gap or transition between bike facilities
Facility Benefits …

Bicycle Tour Leads Couple through Multiple States

by Lisa Tipton        www.brownwoodnews.com

On a bicycle built for two, Brian and Dena Squire are taking a once-in-a-lifetime, 5300 mile trip through the central part of the U.S., visiting family and stopping along the road to “meet America.”  They stopped in Brownwood Wednesday at a local hotel and were able to share the story of their travels.
The Squires were high school sweethearts and have been married for 33 years.  They lived and worked in Cleveland, Ohio for years before moving to Fort Collins, Colorado to retire.  He had worked for a municipal parks system for 32 years, she had worked in finance, most recently for the Cleveland Browns in their accounting department before retiring.
The pair often bike shorter rides and Brian commuted to work for 32 years by bike.  He stated that he “loves the health aspect of it.”
Their plan is to ride from Fort Collins to Austin, Texas to visit their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren for a week, then ride to Cleveland where they will visit old friends and …

Saturday 4/25 and Sunday 4/26 rides!

by Thomas        steinerranchcycling.com

Saturday actually looks decent so far (it is sammiched between rainy Friday and Sunday though). Let’s break out our bikes and tackle Cozy Cove for a meager 47 miles of hilly fun! The route is short, but you will feel it at the end. Note that Saturday is also the Shiner GASP ride.
If you want to do something more epic, Bob Brown is considering the LiveStrong Alternative route on Saturday (it’s 105 miles and has considerable climbing). He wants to achieve several Strava Challenges for …

Bicycle Advisory Council April: Accident Reports, Trail Updates, Bike Lane Parking, 360 Gets a Shoulder & More

Austin On A Bike

A lot of ground was seemingly covered at this month’s Bicycle Advisory Council meeting, so I’m going to try to keep it brief, just-the-facts-ma’am, and present the basics of what you need to know. There was definitely some interesting stuff, so read on. Here it is, bullet-point style:
Your new mantra will be “Forty Three Eleven”
This one came up off the agenda and somewhat in passing, but I feel it’s very much worth mentioning. It’s still in the works and has yet to get the full approval of Chief Acevedo, but if everything goes right, the numbers “43-11? will soon have meaning for Austin cyclists, as they will be your polite way to reinforce that police should, indeed, file an accident report when you are in a collision with a vehicle. “bike crashes that occurred in a public place, bodily injury resulted, the crash was the result of potential criminal activity, violation of the Texas Transportation Code, city ordinance or actions of another,” as clarified by Lt. Malanka
Once this gets the okay and is issued to APD in a training bulletin, we’ll let you know the full details. Right now, all we have is what we heard, which isn’t much, but it sure sounds like a good thing.
Bike Lane Parking Enforcement & Third Street
CoA Bicycle Program staffer Nathan Wilkes got up to explain what’s been going on with …

Commissioners support bike plan, get safety award

By Brian Bethel, Abilene Reporter-News, Texas
ABILENE, Texas — Taylor County commissioners on Tuesday approved a resolution supporting a proposed $2 million bicycle/sidewalk path project that would connect various portions of U.S. 277 to schools and other locations.
In January, the Texas Department of Transportation announced a call for projects for the Transportation Alternatives Program. The city of Abilene would need to put up $408,712 of the $2 million project, assuming it receives the grant dollars.
“That’s a really good return on that investment if we can secure those funds,” said E’Lisa Smetana, executive director of the …

My son. The bike crash. The helmet.

By Saira Jilani, for the Houston Chronicle

‘Safety first,’ I lectured. Minutes later, he was on the ground.

It was early April, a beautiful, sunny spring day in Houston. That rare time of year just before the stifling heat of summer hits. Zayd, my 11-year-old son, had just left our driveway on his bike to ride around the block with his neighborhood friends. My mom, who happened to be visiting us, glanced out the window and noticed that Zayd didn’t have his helmet on.

Bikeabout TX

By Gordon Hodge        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Day 7- Bastrop SP to La Grange,TX: No shame
Wednesday April 22, 2015, 39 miles (63 km) – Total so far: 235 miles (378 km)
weather- 67-81 deg., muggy SSE winds 10mph, T-storms developing late afternoon. some stats- 39.1 miles, 5:20 seat time, 7:25 trip time 7.4 mph moving avg.
A good nights sleep and got an early start for me at 0850. Title is no shame, as in I walked the up 5 hills today. The ride on the park road from Bastrop SP to Buescher SP was one hilly road. I have an inclinometer on bike so I can get a feel for what slopes I can ride and how stronger my stamina is improving. I can pedal 6 deg. ok and grind up 10 deg. if I feel strong. There were several hills 10-15 deg. and one hill at 16 and 18. The 18 deg. hill I could barely even push the bike! Once out of the park there was one more hill to climb leaving Smithville and the Colorado river valley. There was this stupid water tower at top of hill laughing at me(see pic). No more walking hills after that and the ride was pleasant through farmland and rolling terrain. At 12:30 I was nearing Winchester and hoping to stop for lunch break. There was a sign showing a Winchester eatery up ahead, great. Not so great, only open Thur.-Sat. if at all by the looks of it. They did have picnic table in the shade I would take advantage of and break out my reserve rations. I heard some people talking and looked over and 1 block away there were lots of cars. It ended up being just the kind of restaurant I love in a small town (pop. 50). The place is named Murphy’s Steakhouse and is 1 block on the north side of FM 153. There is also the Winchester Ice Cream Parlor next door. I had the …

Slow Moving Construction Hems Biking In

Texbiker.net Posted on April 22, 2015 by Rick AnkrumApril 22, 2015

After biking two days to the southeast today I went to the north and northwest as far as the Grand Parkway construction would allow. I rode what I call the “Oakhurst – Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route. I took a look at the Grand Parkway FM1314 overpass and can report not much has happened since my last visit. Not sure what is the holdup because the middle of the road piers are in place and the shoulder ramparts look done as far as I can tell. They have about 7 months to meet the 2015 completion promise. I am looking forward to getting some of my biking routes back.

The route today was 32.77 miles long with roads on the route not much changed. Probably the road with the roughest surface is Old Sorters Road with a few dips in the asphalt but nothing dangerous as long as you watch the road. No dogs loose along the route today either. There is a large Pit Bull on Adams St. heading into Woodridge Forest that runs out to the end of his chain with a menacing growl, bark and snarl.

My legs were recovering today from the 39 mile ride yesterday. I had a strong pace but couldn’t get the speed high enough nor long enough to keep the average speed at 15.0 mph or above. The wind was from the SSE at 12 mph and slowed me down when I rode into it. There were some long stretches of road for me to get up to 17 or 18 mph but the ones into the wind overcame what I built up then. I did get to 15.0 mph average speed for a short time but fell back riding south on the US59 service road from Valley Ranch to Northpark Drive. I ended up averaging 14.7 mph.

I took a break at the Texaco along US59 at Valley Ranch entrance. When I went inside to refill my water bottle the lady behind the counter asked how far I usually ride. I said 32 to 34 miles most of the time. She then asked how old I was. She was surprise when I said 68. After eating two snack bars and drinking some water I was off for the last 8+ miles home. This was into the wind all the way. Hard pedaling but I made it. I passed Kingwood Park HS about 15 minutes after they let out so traffic wasn’t too bad. I left home at 12:25 and got back at 3:08.

No biking tomorrow. My wife has a oncology treatment at the medical center. 50% chance of rain on Thursday as well.

Trek issues recall of QR on disc-brake bikes

by BRAIN Staff        www.bicycleretailer.com

WATERLOO, Wis. (BRAIN) – Trek is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to recall bikes spec’d with quick releases that have a lever that opens greater than 180 degrees and can be caught in a front disc brake if left in the open position.
The company said that the issue is not a manufacturing defect on the QR but due to improper use or adjustment. Riders who leave the QR in the open position can potentially have the lever caught in the front disc brake while riding.
Trek found out about the issue when it was investigating an accident. Spokesperson Eric Bjorling said the company notified the CPSC about the potential problem. Trek has learned of three cases involving the relevant QR. According to the …

The Future of W. Alabama and Bikes

BikeHouston

One follow-up from the public engagement CIP meetings was to track what is happening along W. Alabama. To remind everyone – this is the rebuilding of W. Alabama from Weslayan to Spur 527 and will be designed and built in three phases. Full details on the Re-build Houston website here.
BikeHouston and supporters of safe bicycling had a great turn-out at the CIP meetings and many spoke in favor of returning the bike lanes to W. Alabama. And the good news is that there will be bicycle facilities along W. Alabama!

Day 5- Round Rock, TX to Bastrop SP,TX: trying to get out the hills
Monday April 20, 2015, 53 miles (85 km) – Total so far: 196 miles (315 km)
weather- 52-75, overcast, windy out NNE.
I left comfy hotel around 10 am heading east on hwy 79 towards Hutto and Taylor, then south to Bastrop. I rode past the TX ranger minor league park for the Express. Looks very modern. tonight is $1 dog night and Bark at Park. Maybe another time. The wind was beating me pretty good and I didn’t the energy. I stopped in Hutto, bought stop-n-rob sandwich and went city park for midday break, even though I was 12 miles in the day. Upon leaving, I decided to head on farm roads to hopefully lessen the miles and wind effect. Not much effect, but the ride was prettier. I just grinded out the miles on rolling terrain. The hills were not as …

Day 6- Bastrop SP day off: Nice day to rest
Tuesday April 21, 2015
I took the day off from riding except for the 2 mile roundtrip to eat a hearty lunch. There is a very good place called the Roadhouse right outside of the entrance to west entry of park. I had my normal cheeseburger/fries and it was very good. Other good items on menu also. I sat there for some time uploading Monday’s blog and catching up on other news. No WIFI, but I used my Galaxy Note II phone as a mobile hotspot and it worked great. Back at camp I washed clothes, charge electronics and read my Kindle all at the restroom. All and all, a relaxing day as …
