About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Denton Bicycle Coalition

I think and feel that the time is right to organize and grow a unified voice for bicyclists of all kinds to encourage more bike ridership and make the streets of Denton more bike-friendly. I am interested in getting the wheels turning to organize the Denton Bicycle Coalition (DBC) for the purpose of engaging in advocacy, education, and community building in the City of Denton. There are many bicycle-friendly businesses, groups, and individuals, but no …

thinkEAST Got Me Thinking About Divides

Austin On A Bike

This past weekend, I made it out to the thinkEAST festival for the final day, somehow crawling out from the rock I’ve apparently been hiding under to not know this awesome thing had been going on for weeks.
For those of you similarly uninitiated, the property where the festival resides and soon a community will sit, according to the thinkEAST blog, “is a 24 acre site located on a former EPA Brownfields that housed jet fuel storage tanks for the nearby Air Force base (now Austin Bergstrom International Airport). For years, the neighborhood smelled of gasoline, residents were getting sick, and …

Rain Disappears and I Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 13, 2015 by Rick AnkrumApril 13, 2015

At 8 o’clock this morning it looked like it was going to rain all day but by 10:30 the rain left and the sun came out. The roads started drying off and at 11:45 I rolled out the driveway to begin the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route. The weather was great with the temperature ranging from 81 to 86 degrees. The SSW wind was 10 mph or less. It was great riding since I didn’t get to ride yesterday (Sunday) for a couple of reasons: on and off rain and my 2013 Jeep Wrangler would not start. The rain would go away long enough for the streets to dry off. I had more success with the Wrangler. I took the battery out to have it tested which turned out to be in good shape. I brought it home, put it back in the Wrangler and it started. Not sure what happened but I am glad.

I was up early this morning to take our other Jeep (Grand Cherokee) to a dealer in Cleveland to check why the engine malfunction light is on. I expected to spend the day but they drove me back home which set up my being home to ride when the weather cleared up.

The ride was 33.81 miles long. I added a few extra streets to get the mileage above 32 miles. The light wind slowed me down going to Huffman but there were places where I got my speed to 20+ mph like going east over Lake Houston on FM1960. This is a straight section with no stop lights and the wind was from my back. I built my average speed up to 15.0 mph there and increased it to 15.1 mph by the time I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for a break. It was pleasant sitting in the shade with the breeze blowing and drying me off. I am a Jeep person and as I was resting it seemed to be Jeeps on parade. They caught my eye with all of the colors and the ones with custom lifts and wheels jumped out even more.

Another biker came my direction on Fairlake Drive. We waved as we passed in opposite directions. It was nice to see someone else enjoying the great weather.

From the Chevron station to home I rode into the wind. It was hard to keep my speed up but I maintained my average speed unit the 32 mile point in Kingwood. By the time I rode into the driveway it settled at 14.9 mph.

Not sure what Tuesday’s weather will be. The forecast calls for some rain. Maybe it won’t happen.

Vets ride to raise awareness, but not for themselves

By Leo Shane III, Staff writer        www.armytimes.com

Navy veteran Josh Sharpe, who lost the use of his legs in a car accident in 1994, will use a handcycle to travel the 180 miles from Houston to Austin, Texas, to raise awareness for his cause. Another 14 injured veterans will join, too, in the hopes of more public attention.
But it’s not a military cause, or one dealing with injured veterans or their struggles.
Rather, it’s an annual fundraising ride for multiple sclerosis research, an illness to which the veteran riders have only tangential connections.
“As injured veterans, we can identify with people struggling with this …

Slowly but Surely …

Pit’s Fritztown News

… I”m getting into a better shape. Yesterday I did and out-and-back of 20.7 miles total here on Lower Crabapple Road, at an average of 11.7 miles per hour. Of course, that is much slower than I used to be, but the Fargo 2 with it’s heavy frame and the big 29? wheels plus the fat [2.2?] tires is a slower bicycle than the sleek Dancelli. Anyway: I’m quite happy with my performance, especially on the climbs. Some parts – luckily quite short – are steep, with up to 13%. And yesterday my heart rate didn’t – at 155 max – get as high up there as …

A Feeling Like No Other

Bike Noob        bikenoob.com

It’s been a long and frustrating hiatus from biking. My bronchitis just wouldn’t go away. The fact that I approached like a typical guy didn’t help any — a typical guy would do nothing but take some throat lozenges and hope for the best. That’s what I did. And although my wife was after me to see the doctor, the Mayo Clinic’s website says you don’t need to see a doc until you’ve had the bronchitis for three weeks. If it hasn’t cleared itself up by then, maybe an intervention is called for.
I took solace in the fact that I coughed a little less each day. Aside from the coughing, I felt normal. But the lack of cycling exercise contributed to an overall sluggish feeling that I …

New road rules in Texas? Watch out for bicyclists

By Anna M. Tinsley        www.star-telegram.com

Bikers rode in silence along Interstate 20 Service Road in Willow Park in 2010, honoring fallen bicyclists killed along that road — along with the hundreds of other riders killed in accidents every year. The ride also was geared to encourage motorists to share the road with bicyclists. RODGER MALLISON STAR-TELEGRAM

Sarah Lutz is wary every time she gets on her bicycle.
When she heads out for a ride, she can’t help remembering the two times she was hit by a car, including one crash that broke her leg and tore up her bicycle.
“I would like to say I feel very safe, but I’m always on high alert,” said Lutz, a 26-year-old pedicab driver in Arlington. “Cars just aren’t looking for bikes; they’re looking for other …

Yes … we are seeing the Texas Blues! Molly and I are bicycle touring through Texas, the Ozarks, and finally finishing up along the Missouri River. Right now we are working our way through the Texas Hill Country, and singing the Texas Blues! The birds are fantastic, but they are just one part of the “blues” for this is Blue Bonnet season. The roadsides are an explosion of color from all the different wildflowers, but particularly Texas Blue Bonnets. Over the past five days we have cycled 231 miles … here is our tale of blue!
