About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Door Zone Warning

Bike Noob

Last week, when I went for a ride against my better judgment and wound up aggravating my bronchitis, I was cruising through a new housing development that still has some construction going on. I saw one of the workers shoulder some tools and head toward the street, so I swerved a bit to my right to avoid him. Just then, the door of a pickup truck on my right opened. I had just a second to swerve back and thread the needle between the tool guy and the door.
I got through that all right, but lots of cyclists get nailed by the opening door. So I was glad to see some new striping go down on streets in my area, with a feature I hadn’t seen before. …

Texas Hell Week!

Cycling for Autism        cyclingforautism.com

We survived Texas Hell Week! Fredericksburg, TX was a gorgeous place to ride, with fantastic roads and (mostly) fantastic weather! Six friends from the Wabash River Cycle Club were also there, which made it even more fun! The first 3 days went great for both of us, but my patellofemoral syndrome kicked in after 12,000 feet of climbing. Despite icing and mega doses of Advil, I wasn’t able to ride thereafter. Craig, on the other hand, had no problems crop up and was able to ride all 6 days (the last 2 days were rained out). So I ended up with ~300 miles, and Craig had ~575 miles. We highly recommend this ride to …

By Daniel Borunda / El Paso Times

The man, whose name was …

Spring Creek Greenway

Cycling Space City        cyclingspacecity.blogspot.com

North of George Bush Airport in Spring is the Spring Creek Greenway.  Currently the Spring Creek Greenway has about 12 miles of shared-use paths with plans to expand even further.  The shared-use path along the greenway connects Dennis-Johnston Park, Pundt Park, and Jesse Jones Park.  This path is just winding enough to keep a cyclist interested, and even has some small elevation changes. For someone who rides through George Bush Park all the time it is refreshing to have to pay attention to the curves in the road and shift gears occasionally. The …

UC Bearcat Jersey Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 23, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMarch 23, 2015

The weather delivered as forecast and I was out riding this afternoon. I left home rather late at 2:00 PM with enough time to get past Kingwood High School before they flooded the streets and greenbelt. I rode the “Stroker Road – Huffman” route for a total of 38.13 miles. The last time I was this far east was the Humble Lions Club ride in February. I got back home at 5:01. This reminds me of riding when I still worked. I would rush home from work, get home around 6:00 and rush to get 20 to 22 miles in before the sun went down. I hear some people complain about daylight savings time but my riding would have been in the dark if it wasn’t for the DST. Now that I am retired it isn’t as necessary but I still like the longer daylight in the evening.

Wind seemed to come from about every direction during the ride. My legs didn’t have the extra zip to go fast when I was going into the wind. The only relief was going to the west. I was able to boost my average speed to a whopping 15.2 mph during the ride on the west bound roads. There weren’t just enough of them.

I saw two bikers on Old Atascocita Road east of FM2100 while i was going west they were going east. They weren’t together, separated by several hundred feet. They may have been suffering like I did when I was riding to the east. This particular area doesn’t have much to block the wind. There was section of road when I turned left onto Ramsey Road from Stroker Road where there was nothing to block the wind. The tallest plant was grass and I was fully exposed to the wind power.

Even though it was 82 degrees at the home weather station I wore a UC Bearcat short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve one. I think that was a good move and I was comfortable with wind having some chill in it from yesterday’s front. Before the ride my wife mended a seam on the Bearcat jersey. The colors (red and black) go well with my Stradalli bike.

Weather forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday: excellent biking weather, partly cloudy and upper 70’s.

How to Successfully Complete your First Century

www.wheelbrothers.com

If you’ve taken up cycling in the last year and find yourself desiring to complete your first 100 mile ride, you might have a lot of questions. What should you take? Should you go with a group? How can you make sure your body is up to the task? What if you get lost?
These are all great questions worth taking the time to find the answers to before you attempt it. A successful century depends on two things; Preparation is vital for body and machine, and follow through on your plans will get you all the way to the last mile. Use the information we’ve gathered to make it a great first century of …

The annual race/fun ride that inspires one to start working out in January to prepare for this event. If 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in your age group, it is a race. If you come in 4th or more, it is a fun ride. One cannot lose.
One may not lose, but you take a gamble on what the weather will be on that day. This time we had temperatures in the low 50’s and sprinkles most of the day. Above is one of the parking lots we used as a warm up area. I didn’t get warm though, just chilled. On fairer ride days of the …

Austin on a Bike’s Alternative Bike Routes: Rolling(wood) Out West

Austin On A Bike        austinonabike.com

In continuing our series on better bike routes and ways to get around town, we had planned to write about all the sneaky little ways to get around the east side this week, but in the spirit of SXSW leaving town and many of us swearing off the booze for the unforeseen future, we present to you instead a beautiful bike ride through the western hills.
Now, nothing about this ride is for a novice cyclist – the hills, the traffic, the roads – but for those of you that can handle riding on a wide shoulder with traffic whizzing past and about 5-miles of climbing to start either coming or going, this is a beautiful ride that …

Battled Wind To Cumberland Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 22, 2015 by Rick AnkrumMarch 22, 2015

If you would have asked me yesterday if the weather would clear up enough to ride today I not said yes. It turned out the front moved through quickly and the rain was gone. A mostly cloudy sky stayed around and a brisk 14 mph NW wind was blowing. The wind was chilly but the 70 to 76 degrees offset it as long as I was in the sun.

With all the rain we got I was thinking some roads on the “Cumberland – Valley Ranch” route might be wet, particularly Knox Road west of Loop 494 but not so. This route keeps me east and south of the Gran Parkway construction north of Porter. I need to be a little creative to get 30 miles and today I rode 30.1 miles. That brisk wind battled me all the way to Cumberland and whenever I rode north. I managed to get my average speed up to 15.1 mph but it dropped down to 14.8 mph overall by the time I biked back through Kingwood at the end of the ride.

The new Continental Gatorskin Hardshell tires performed great. It will take some miles to wear off the rubber flashing from the tread. There is plenty of room between the tire and left chainstay now. I can’ tell if there was any rubbing until I take the wheel off.

I saw one other biker on FM1314. I was head west and he was going east around Timberland Blvd. He was in an aero tuck on his bars and I didn’t see him in time to wave.

With today’s ride I just barely got over 300 miles for March at 300.25 miles. The week’s total miles are 169.13 and 735 miles YTD.

Monday through Wednesday look like great weather for biking. I will do my best to be out there.
