About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling News Digest January 22nd

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2015 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2015

My cycling club/ advocacy group is riding from Austin to Dallas in March. Supported 2 days with hotels and plenty of beer.

by Classicwgn86        www.reddit.com

We are group that originally met doing bar hop rides in Dallas and thought it would be a good idea to ride to Austin on Fixed Gears for South by Southwest. That was six years ago. After our second time to make the trip we decide to take our enthusiasm and direct it towards the lack of cycling awareness in Dallas. South by South Fixed has become our annual pilgrimage, bringing in new members, gaining a …

This article is not Texas specific but offers a unique approach to cycling after a bad crash.

Our Electric-Assist Bicycle

by Gabe Mirkin, MD        drmirkin.com

Diana and I are passionate tandem bicycle riders. We live in The Villages in Florida, the largest retirement community in the world, and we ride every day with a group of serious tandem-bicycle riding couples. Last March we were riding our tandem very fast, drove into a deep pile of sand on the road and crashed. I was not hurt, but Diana broke her pelvis, hip, shoulder and wrist and surgeons had to install a significant amount of hardware in her body to put her back together. She has severe osteoporosis. This means that the next crash could have even more serious consequences.
We Bought a Recumbent Tandem Tricycle
We certainly were not going to give up riding bicycles. Bicycle riding is our passion. So our friend Larry Black, of Mt Airy Bicycles in Maryland, sold us a recumbent tandem tricycle, which is much safer than our …

Bike share isn’t equitable. Let’s change that

by April Corbin, equity writer        www.peopleforbikes.org

In North America, 2013 was the year of bike sharing. Now, we are working to make 2015 the year of equitable bike share.
The benefits of a bike share program are numerous. It can inexpensively bridge the “last mile gap” between a commuter’s primary public transit and their final destination. It provides visitors an exciting new way to explore a city. It gets people who might not otherwise ride onto bicycles. It encourages physical activity. It is environmentally friendly.
Yet one problem has plagued bike share systems: Report after report has shown that the demographics of users do not reflect the cities overall. Members are disproportionately …

With the lousy weather it may help to work on your bike

Home Workshop Series – Part 4: Getting into the Big Tools

by Tim Krueger         www.bikerumor.com

From the first three articles, someone could easily put together a home shop to do 75% of the repairs on their bike. But once you get past the surface of adjustments and basic components, it is gonna take some pretty large and expensive tools to start working further.
A lot of home mechanics have low-buck ways of replicating these tools, and those methods probably work. Coming from a shop background though, we recommend using the right tool, or taking it to a shop. While you might save money making your own headset press from threaded rod, nuts and washers, the cost savings evaporate if you accidentally wreck that …

TCC proposed to “Adopt” a stretch of road. Good? Bad? Please read & voice your opinion

by Charlie & Pat Jenkins        Texoma Cycling Club

Adopt a Highway – Chris suggested that TCC “Adopt” the section of FM-691 between Texoma & FM-131. They are in the process of widening this & are supposed to include a shoulder. We anticipate the club utilizing this frequently to access routes west of 75.
The basics are:
– TCC would adopt a two-mile stretch of highway for a minimum of two years. Note: Interstate highways are not eligible for adoption.
– We would agree to pickup litter four times per year (more in some areas due to heavy traffic). This would be done as a group effort.
– Adopt-a-Highway signs will be posted with Texoma Cycling Club at our adopted section.
– Adopt-a-Highway will provide TCC with safety vests, litter bags and safety training.
– You bask in the glory of claiming a piece of Texas pride.

Postponement of US ‘cross nationals cost riders over $250,000

By: Laura Weislo        www.cyclingnews.com

Financial impact of USA cyclo-cross championship estimated in survey
The actual cost of the one-day postponement of the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championship may never be known, but one informal survey estimated the impact at more than a quarter million dollars.
Amateur racer and fan Matthew Montesano watched the drama unfold from his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and created the online survey, which …

Pedestrians’ plight

By Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe, Staff Writer        www.dentonrc.com

… A Denton Record-Chronicle analysis in October 2014 found that vehicle-bicycle and vehicle-pedestrian accidents have increased in recent years.
In 2009, there were 45 accidents between Denton drivers and cyclists or pedestrians. By 2012, that number climbed to 59 — a 30 percent increase at a time when the city’s population increased about 7 percent.
Between 2008 and 2012, most of the increase in those accidents came between drivers and pedestrians. The number of driver-cyclist incidents remained fairly flat, hovering between 20 and 24 accidents each year.
However, police responded to 33 vehicle-bicycle accidents between February …

Frisco council approves construction of pump track for bikers

By CLAIRE Z. CARDONA, Staff Writer        www.dallasnews.com

Bicyclists will soon have a new reason to get pumped up about Frisco.
The city, which the League of American Bicyclists has recognized as a bicycle-friendly community, will be building a $75,000 pump track — a loop of dirt-covered mounds and berms designed for BMX and mountain bikers.
The pump track, which the City Council unanimously approved this month, will be the third of its kind in the Dallas area. But it’s the first to be built by …

Mellow Johnny’s bike shop expanding to Fort Worth

BY Pam LeBlanc        fitness.blog.austin360.com

Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop is rolling into Fort Worth.
Crews have already broken ground on the new location, part of the Clearfork Trailhead Cycling and Fitness Center on the banks of the Trinity River in Fort Worth.
The expansion marks the first spinoff of the Austin-based store, opened by cyclist Lance Armstrong and two other partners in 2008. Armstrong won the Tour de France seven times but was later stripped of his victories after admitting he doped during the races.
The Fort Worth shop will be operated and managed by Mellow Johnny’s, but Armstrong does not have financial ownership, said Todd Church, partnerships manager for Mellow Johnny’s. Clearfork, a mixed—use development of residential, retail shops and restaurants, will own the 13,000-square foot facility, which will also house a …

My First Mountain Bike Race- The Erwin Park Endurance Series

bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

It was a cold, cloudy and muddy 29 degrees Fahrenheit when I rode my first mountain bike race two weeks ago on January 10th, 2015. Since showing up is half the battle, I figured this was going to be my best chance at placing well in a local race. The race was held on a course that I am familiar with and ride often. I also assumed that most of the local competition wouldn’t show up due to the cold weather. What I wasn’t ready for was the injury I suffered on the day before the race, which has resulted in a seroma on my inner thigh as a result of …
