About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

I Gave Up Waiting and Rode the Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on December 4, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 4, 2014

I tried to be optimistic about the weather today but it was tough. The weatherman forecast 70+ degrees but by 12:30 it was only 67  and overcast. I was out on a errand earlier and wanted to ride my MTB on the trails. I made up my mind to get dressed and ride on the trails even with it being cooler than I was expecting.

Leaving home at 12:39 I thought on how to vary the route some. I changed a few sections but mainly I was on the trails I usually ride. The ride ended up at 17.83 miles long. Since I was on my MTB the average speed was way below the road bike level at 12.4 mph. Riding the trails is not a fast type of ride. The turns and bends with some stops to get across streets slow me down plus I am not in such a hurry.

Deciding on an appropriate wardrobe took some effort. It was cool enough for long sleeve jersey and windbreaker but which one. I chose a heavier long sleeve jersey and a jacket that does not have any venting. As I rode I could feel the sweat building up and at one point I stopped to answer my phone. Pulling the phone out of my rear pocket it was coated in moisture (outside of the plastic bag) and I wiped it on my leg warmer. Granted the screen was facing my back and not the jacket which probably caused the buildup. By the time I finished at 2:10 my gloves were damp around the top. I should have used the vented jacket. I was warm though throughout the ride after the first 15 minutes or so.

Being fall the trails were covered in leaves except for a few places. Near the end I paused to allow a Gator with a leave blower come around a corner. That trail was almost leaf free to the next intersection.

Now that December arrived I am getting close to my year goal of 6500 miles. With today’s ride I am at 6414 miles, 86 miles to go. The December weather can be all over the place so I will need to ride whenever the opportunity arrives.

Today’s ride is the 9th time on my MTB this year. I rode 178 times on my road bikes this year.

One year after cyclist’s death, safety of Houston streets remains unclear

By Dug Begley            www.houstonchronicle.com

The cold weather  wasn’t the only source of the chill in the air Monday night along Waugh Drive. Sure, the air had that damp feel that floats across Houston from time time in November and December.
But something else was at work.
It was one year ago Monday, at 10:17 p.m., when Chelsea Norman took off from her job at Whole Foods, according to Houston police. A few moments later, she was pedaling along Waugh when, it is now suspected, Margaret Renee Mayer, 35, came driving by. Whatever happened — who had or had not been drinking and who did or didn’t have …

Annual Toys for Tots campaign chugging along in Denton County

By Megan Gray-Hatfield, Staff Writer        www.dentonrc.com

So far, the Toys for Tots campaign in Denton County is on par with last year’s efforts, and organizers said they hope this year’s toy drive can be one of their best yet.
On Monday, an estimated $9,000 worth of toys were dropped off at First Baptist Church of Denton for the church’s Elves Shelves program, and that’s just the beginning, say organizers with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.
“Our big drive will be this weekend at …

Race Preview – CCCx – 12.06.14

by joeyTWOwheels        texascx.com

First time on the TXCX for CCCX, and the first time Copperas Cove has hosted a cyclocross event. Race Director, Andy Hollinger, is bringing our sport to this hamlet of a town.
Andy – what can we expect from Ogletree Gap Preserve? Hilly? Sandy?
The Course is on a new nature park. There are fields, trees several hills and a stream.
Tell us about the park itself – much to do for families and kids?
The park is under development and there is plenty of nature to explore. It doesn’t have any real facilities there yet.
Where is the best place to warmup?
The road into the park will give a good paved surface and the park above our course will …

The Chelsea Norman Trial

BikeHouston

On December 1st, 2013, Houston lost a great individual who was riding her bicycle home from work one night. Her name was Chelsea Norman. Please show your support by riding with us Sunday Evening in the Chelsea Norman Trial Support Ride and attend the trial of the suspected motorist the next day, Monday, Dec 8th.
“The trial of Margaret Renee Mayer is scheduled to start on December 8th. She will be on trial for Failure to Stop and Render Aid resulting in the death of Chelsea Norman…. It’s time for another installment of the I Bike Richardson series, where we put a face on Richardson cyclists. We’d like to introduce Ken Cohen. He took the time to answer a few questions about biking. Enjoy:

Dangerous debris in bike lanes pushes cyclists onto roadways

by Ashly Custer        www.valleycentral.com

(Video)
Cyclists in Hidalgo County are speaking out about debris in the bike lanes and they said that it’s not only an obstacle for riders, but it’s also a safety concern.
Local cyclists told Action4 News they love the fact that there are bike lanes available, but said they are not properly maintained and as a result, the lanes are not safe to use.
Now, cyclists are being forced into the roadway with other motoring traffic.
Bill Lang is a lifelong cyclist who has organized and led cycling tours for over the last 50 years. He said cycling on public roads in Hidalgo County has its challenges.
“Motorists look at us and ask the question, ‘Why aren’t they over in the bike lane? We have dedicated bicycle lanes, but bicyclists won’t use it? They’re out on the …
