About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Changing Leaves and Some Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on November 26, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 26, 2014

I skipped the last two days because it was cooler than I like but today it warmed up to 71 degrees but the wind was stiff from the WSW at 10 mph and 17 mph gusts. The sky was a clear blue. At the beginning of the ride I rode west along Northpark Drive on the greenbelt trail. The east bound lanes are about 8 feet away and the traffic created more wind turbulence making fast riding difficult. This made me grateful for the clothes I selected: leg warmers over my shorts, long and short sleeve jerseys and a wind breaker jacket.  Once I was amongst the trees on the trails the wind was not such a problem and it was cooler except when I rode into an opening with sun.

The activity profile on my Garmin 510 still needs tweaking: I forgot to set the lap distance. I set the lap time to 5 miles which I thought set it. More adjustments. I now have a MTB activity profile to go with my MTB rides.

The ride was 16.39 miles long. The average speed was 12.4 mph. I have remember the gearing and speed riding my MTB is different from a road bike.

Temperature and daylight changes have started the leaves color bonanza. It is beautiful riding on the trails. Sometimes the leaves have fallen in such large amounts the trail is covered. I have to pay attention not to go off the concrete or asphalt trail. I did not see many other people on the trails. There was a father and his two children in the first 2 miles. The boy was riding a balance bike and the girl had training wheels. The trail was nice and wide where we passed.

No biking tomorrow on Thanksgiving Day. Friday and Saturday the weather looks great. I should be able to ride the Stradalli RP-14.

I am now up to 158.38 miles for November and 6330 miles for the year. 170 miles to go.

Mountain Biking in Texas: Erwin Park, Mckinney

bicyclepointofview.blogspot.com

Past the northern suburbs of the city of Dallas and Tarrant county, mountain biking options are few and far in between. Erwin Park has been around since the 90’s and it’s the go to place for local Collin county mountain biking scene.  About 8 miles long, this trail is known to have lots of tree roots that can frustrate many  a newcomer who come and ride it. It is not the fastest flowing trail in DFW, nor is it the most challenging. In spite of this it is challenging enough to keep intermediate riders on their toes and boasts a variety of obstacles that are both …

Performance Great Ride Series: North Houston

A West Texas Gem- The McDonald Observatory

by Max Crawford        NewsWest 9    (Video)

… [It is] intriguing to me. We did the bike ride as well as find out there was an observatory.” “I just think observatories are amazing and having the opportunity to look through telescopes and look at the sky is just wonderful,” Schmitt said.”People in Austin said, you’ve got to get out here, its beautiful, there’s no traffic, the hills are great, it’s quiet. Big sky.”
Not a hiker or cyclist? That’s ok! If they view alone doesn’t take your breath away, there’s plenty more to see at the observatory.”We do open the larger telescopes up for the public to look through for education and for fun, several nights a month,” Wren said. “You can get reservations to come out here and do that; it’s really a lot of fun. We hold public star parties here 3 nights a week, every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. We’ve got telescopes in the back that we look through visually for fun. We do guided tours twice a day, every day year round. So, we do a …

Cyclocross is most certainly here in Houston

by kuotient        kuotient.wordpress.com

It was a good weekend for cyclocross racing in Houston! On Saturday, there was Terra X (round 2 of the Southern Cross Series) up in The Woodlands, and Sunday was the Houston Cyclocross Challenge presented by Bike Barn! Both were complete mud-fests, which is typically what people picture in their head when they think of great CX races.
I personally thought the Houston CX Challenge was tougher because of the deep mud pits, but I can see why others thought Terra X was the more difficult of the two. It was still really muddy, but had a really killer run-up and was a …

A Summer of Cycling 2014

by Ray Garza            rgvcycling.com

Well summer is over and I’m going through the winter blues. We’ve had spat of rainy weeks and cold weather and that really knocked me off the bike and forced me to do other things around the house. Home automation was one project and the other was making videos out of my pictures.
With my lack of motivation, I turned to my iPhone and a neat little app called Replay. Replay lets you gather up your pictures and video clips and make a video out of in very quickly. All you have to do is select your pics and vids and put them in the order you would like to display them, select one of many themes, audio and let replay do all the heavy lifting  to sync the pics to the beat of the music and adjust the colors to the …

Rally forth

By Megan Gray-Hatfield        www.dentonrc.com

Despite the slick roads and a brief hail storm, an estimated 250 cyclists participated in the Denton Breakfast Kiwanis’ 32nd annual Turkey Roll on Saturday.
The rally started at 9 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2255 N. Bonnie Brae St. in Denton, where riders chose from 8-, 29-, 39-, 52- and 68-mile courses.
Earlier forecasts predicted heavy rainfall. That’s why volunteer coordinator and club member Mary Harris thinks there was such a low turnout, although not as …

Super Squadra 2015

Marcus Pinus        mpincus.blogspot.com

I am very happy to announce that in 2015 I will be racing with my old team, Super Squadra, based out of Austin Texas. I was given a choice between racing professionally or continue my education at the University of Houston. I ultimately chose the latter.
I learned a lot racing professionally this past season, and I feel that I reached a new level in my own cycling growth. Racing against the best American Criterium racers here in the states, as well as …

Reveille Peak Ranch in the rain

Turnin’ Cranks

Today during the RPR100k, the weather turned rough and it poured rain. Were it not for the lightning, we could have still done the race, but alas with all the nearby lightning strikes, they had to call the race off after 2 of 4 laps.

A Muddy Weekend in the ‘Cross Trenches

theradavist.com

ou’ll have to excuse the excess in this photo gallery. There are a lot of shots in here.
Now that I stated the obvious, here’s even more… In Texas, we don’t get much rain, nor do we get many rainy cross races. So when the sky opens and the mud builds up, don’t be surprised to see file tread tires and Red cassettes in the staging areas.
Like house cats, having escaped for the weekend, a lot of people got quite the shock when every corner was suddenly slick and every descent, a myriad of dark brown ruts, with no grass to grip for traction.
Saturday’s race has been called the best of the season. A lotta climbing, as much descending. All in …
