About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Race Preview – Terra X – 11.22.14

by joeyTWOwheels        texascx.com

Back to Space City this weekend for two classic courses in the Texas Cup. First up on Saturday, Terra X.
Craig FItzgerald, one of the fast masters on the TXCX scene, has been directing races in Texas since 2007. In fact, Terra X is five years old this year. (Don’t forget about past race previews – videos and more – here.)
Craig – tell us why Terramont park is such a great venue.
For whatever reason, as racers, we love cyclocross racing. But cyclocross brings the race to the spectator. I believe cyclocross is the best facet of racing for the spectator. And at Terramont Park, the spectator can stand in …

Mulligan Trail – Part of Deception at Brushy Creek

Quick video of riding Mulligan at the end of my ride this evening. Managed to clip a tree and smash my knuckle pretty good, thus the expletive. Also photo-bombed a family doing holiday photos as I came down Cru Jones.

Bike Friendly Richardson Presents: Black Friday Ride #6

bikefriendlyrichardson.org

It’s that time of year again. It’s the time to AVOID all the big crowds at the shopping mall, work off that Thanksgiving dinner and have a fun ride around town.
You are invited to attend Bike Friendly Richardson‘s SIXTH (that’s right, 6th) annual Black Friday Ride. Started six years ago as the inaugural ride that launched Bike Friendly Richardson (which makes us 5 years old), the Black Friday Ride gives folks an alternative way to kick off the holiday season. This is a casual paced ride that will explore many of the …

Boy, 9, wraps up his 1,500 mile fundraising bike ride in St. Augustine on Saturday; other riders welcome

By Sue Bjorkman        jacksonville.com

Imagine knowing your calling at 5 years old. For C.J. Burford, now all of 9, that’s when he knew for certain what he was supposed to do in life. He was supposed to raise money for sick children all over the world by riding his bike.
By the time this little man on a mission pedals into St. Augustine Beach on Saturday, he will have ridden his Jamis Xenith Comp bike 1,500 miles in 83 days for a good cause.
Through his family’s nonprofit organization, loveFar, the goal is to raise $100,000 for the National Children’s Cancer Society.
He doesn’t do this for any specific child; he just knows there is a lot of need. C.J. said he chose NCCS because it directly helps families of children with cancer by providing financial, emotional and educational resources.
Starting in Oceanside, Ca., on Sept. 1, C.J. has been pedaling the route called the Southern Tier Adventure Cycling route, which winds through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, …

Slow to Leave Due to a Technology Glitch

Texbiker.net Posted on November 19, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 19, 2014

After many days of cold and some wet I was able to get on my MTB and ride today. Around 10:30 I was outside and noticed the weather warming up and some sun. I thought it might just warm up enough to ride. By 1:00 it was 66 degrees so I got dressed and got my things together. Then the technology glitch arrived. I got a new cell phone (One Plus One) and I couldn’t get it to pair with my Garmin Edge 510. I tried about everything I knew to get the Bluetooth airwaves to talk to each other. After about 15 minutes it worked. I don’t know what I did but I was able to get out the door at 1:29.

The plan all along was to ride the Kingwood greenbelt trails on my MTB and with the late start I was glad to get out and ride. By now the sun was in and out of some clouds and on the trails it felt cooler than when I was in the sun. Fortunately I wore my cool weather cloths: leg warmers, short sleeve jersey, long sleeve jersey, windbreaker jacket, half finger gloves and shorts. This was just about right. I wasn’t too hot nor too cool. One time when I stopped for several minutes trying to change the screen on the Garmin I got a chill from the sweat and wind. Once I restarted it wasn’t too long before I was warm again.

There weren’t too many people on the trails but I did pass another decked out MTB rider along Mills Branch Drive. We kind of grunted at each other as we passed because he came around a corner pretty quick and there wasn’t much time to exchange words.

I rode in an opposite direction on the trails most of the time. Again this gives a different perspective from the other direction. One hill I usually ride down I had to shift down a gear and slowly pedal up. I ended up riding 17.13 miles. Since I was on my MTB the average speed was no where near my road bike level but the ride is different.

After my last ride (November 10th) I was maybe too optimistic about reaching my year’s goal of 6500 miles. With 11 days left in November and some more winter weather on the way I am up to 6281 miles. This leaves 219 more to reach that goal. Only riding 4 times this month it could be difficult to hit 200 miles for November. I am at 110 as of now. There is some warm weather in the forecast for Sunday and Monday so there is hope.

Camp Eagle Bike and Climb Nov 21-23

by John        www.austinbike.com

Once a month or so, Camp Eagle – Real is open to the public for both biking and climbing.  If you haven’t had a chance to make it out here, it’s a good trail (and it is often a race destination if that tells you a bit about what the riding is like.)
For more information go to their website

CranksGiving, November 29

by John        www.austinbike.com

For the first time, the event will feature two connecting loops – the standard Flat Creek race loop (7 miles), and the newly constructed Pedernales Falls State Park Loop (9.5 miles)! You will not need to ride on the road, as the two properties are adjoining and the gate between them will be open.

This will be a great opportunity to ride on both properties and experience an event that might be a once in a lifetime occurrence.

To register for the event, go to: https://www.bikereg.com/cranksgiving2014
Online registration – $25 (ends 11/25/14)
Onsite registration – $30
USAC License required. One day permits available onsite: $10

How many laps can you ride around Flat Creek and Pedernales Falls in 6 hours? Ride begins at 9:30am, last laps start no later than 3:00pm. Earn a raffle ticket for each lap on each property which you complete (so a full lap earns you two tickets). Results and …

If you’re looking for an awesome mountain bike ride through the Houston forest, look no further than Memorial Park Trails. This gorgeous, heavily forested park is like a leafy oasis surrounded by the concrete jungle of Houston.
Complete with some easy areas, mid-level sections as well as some expert-level zones, this 6-mile long trail has something for mountain bikers of all skill levels. Unlike many other bike paths in the Houston area, this relatively hilly trail includes plenty of twists and turns and also crosses over creeks and …

Mid-Season Report – Sandbagger’s Ball, part deux: Ladies’ Night

by Beer Chaser         texascx.com

Yeah. We’re a few beers in to the evening and have blown off whatever the hell else it is we’re supposed to be doing (like this week’s race previews) to bring you the women’s edition of the Sandbagger’s Ball.
To get an idea of the rules and regulations regarding upgrades, check out last week’s report on the men too scared to put in for the upgrade.
Editors note: Unbeknownst to us, Ray Frias actually requested and got his cat 3 upgrade the day prior to our last article. Not that we would have cared had we known. And Cassidy Keleand? After winning in Georgetown and then winning Day 1 at CX7s, what did he do on day two? Raced the 3/4 on Sunday. Ouch.
We’re looking at a handful of the top ranked women racers in Texas as well as a few other well known names. If we leave someone out that you love dearly, or that is a total sandbagger, let us know! We probably won’t do anything about …

Houston has the recipe for portable water

By Dug Begley        blog.chron.com

One topic that, understandably, comes up in any discussion of bicycling as a way to get around the Houston area is the climate. For leisure, yeah, people are willing to work up a sweat — but to get to work every day?
For downtown workers, commuting by bike involves a risk of soaking your work clothes with sweat unless your office provides a place to change and maybe even shower. Then there’s the effect of 93-degree temperatures and 95-percent humidity on one’s interest in biking. It’s just not ..

Palo Duro Marathon Race Write Up

by Sharon McNutt        www.bigpigracing.org

Race write up for the Palo Duro Marathon race. This is my selfie after the race. This Tmbra marathon is 2015, technically my racing age is 50 next yr. This was one of the reasons I wanted to race a full marathon. Turning 50 is a big deal to me after aggressive cancer treatments. So here is my race report.
The morning started out cold, race start was 10:30am. Most of us was overdressed and I quickly realized I was too. At the last minute I took off some layers, and proceeded to the staging area. As usual the morning was glorious, the racers at the Palo duro marathon race are always my fav. Maybe because the canyon is just a beautiful place.
First lap and I wasn’t feeling it. I was struggling mentally. I had to much clutter in my head and I couldn’t get in the zone. I realized I wasn’t drinking enough and quickly adjusted that. By mile 12 I was in the zone, not letting anymore distractions in my …
