About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Southern Tier – El Paso Texas, Eastbound

By Isaac Evanoski        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Getting to El Paso
Wednesday November 5, 2014
Heading across the Southwest to El Paso to do some riding across Texas. Hoping for an uneventful Amtrak ride and just one night in El Paso before carrying on eastbound. I’m excited to see the wide open state of Texas and will try to camp whenever possible. If camping is unavaialbe I will try to reach out to warmshowers hosts. The west coast has been excellent for cycling and meeting all types of adventurers. If anyone is travelling a similar route in Texas and would be interested in meeting up, just send me a message. I will continue to try and update this journal every few days from wifi hotspots. Godspeed …

A Good Sign

Bike Noob

During the summer, I expressed my concern over the resurfacing of streets in our neighborhood with chip seal. Chip seal is irritating, because cyclists are riding through small, loose gravel until it become tamped down to a sort of smooth surface.
That tamping is pretty much taken care of now, and on a ride the other morning, I saw some crews striping the streets. The striping doesn’t just trace the marking that had been in place previously. Instead, it …

Time to start thinking about winter cycling wardrobe

by BillCullins        www.gosanangelo.com

Cold fronts are coming through, and the weather forecast calls for a wetter-than-normal winter, so it’s time to get your outdoor winter workout wardrobe ready.
Although West Texas has (comparatively speaking) very mild winters, the next four months or so will have days when it’s cold, wet, windy or all of those combined.
In fact, you may get a taste of the cold and some northerly wind during the upcoming week.
There are multiple factors to consider when selecting clothing for winter cycling and running, but the most important are wind and …

Dust Off the MTB

Texbiker.net Posted on November 8, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 8, 2014

It’s been a few days since my last bike ride. Between having company, rain, outpatient surgery on my wife and some cool weather biking has been moved back on the list of things to do. Today I decided if I can’t ride 30+ miles on my Stradalli then 15.43 miles on my MTB is the next best thing. Riding on the trails in Kingwood I came across a few other people riding, people walking and dogs walking their owners. Around the 9 mile mark I thought I would have to return home early when a few rain drops fell but they didn’t last long and I continued on. Amongst the trees the rain would not have been too big of a deal.

The 26 x 2.0 tires ride much smoother on the paved trails and are quieter too. They also seem to require less effort to pedal especially going up the small inclines we have.

The leaves are falling and the trails should be covered but I think the trail maintenance crews are blowing them off for now. They have a Ford Ranger pickup with two blowers on the lowered tailgate. As they drive on the trails the blowers send the leaves into the brush and trees.

This was the 6th ride on Kingwood trails this year. The MTB is not getting much action.

Overcast skies and 70 degrees made it feel a little chilly so I wore a T-shirt under a long sleeve jersey. With all of the trees the 9 mph wind didn’t really have much effect.

The new Shimano SPD pedals and cleats work much better than the old ones I removed. No more sticky cleat on the right pedal. This almost cause a spill or two in the past.

I am inching toward the 6500 miles for the year with 6223 miles for the year. 277 miles to go. The weather man is trying to scare me with talk of 30 degrees next week. I would like to ride the Spirit Ride next Saturday in Livingston but not if its that cold. No preregistration for now; I will wait till Friday to make the decision.

2014 Bicycle Master Plan

www.austintexas.gov

The Austin City Council will conduct a public hearing and consider an ordinance to amend the Austin Bicycle Master Plan on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014.
The plan proposes implementing elements of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan by creating a connected and protected active transportation network that will provide additional transportation options for Austin residents and visitors. The plan’s overarching goals is to significantly increase bicycle use and improve bicycle safety throughout Austin.

Ride Texas to honor veterans Tuesday

CORPUS CHRISTI – Among the various local Veterans Day observances, perhaps none resonates as much with athletes as Ride Texas.
The challenge takes 24 cyclists — a combination of veterans, wounded veterans and supporters — 586 miles in six days from Wichita Falls to Corpus Christi. Cycling clubs of communities along the route accompany riders for portions of the journey. The greatest support by far has come from Corpus Christi, in the form of…

Council: Landlords Speak out Against Section 8, New Bicycle Plan and More

By: Jeff Stensland        austin.twcnews.com

Landlords say they’re against Austin’s approach to finding more housing options for families who use Section 8.
Local property managers believe they should not be forced to accept the federal housing vouchers. Right now, less than 10 percent of Austin rental properties accept tenants who use housing assistance.
Landlords say that’s mainly because Section 8 rules are very different from most Texas rental agreements.
“It’s not a matter of them not finding a home,” Robbie Robinson with the Austin Apartment Association said. “It may be a matter of them not …
