About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

RAT Update from Kevin C. and Josh D.

Spinistry

About to get in bed. Found a crummy motel in the monkey butt (that’s exactly what it smells like, even from 30 miles away) town of Tulia. But they rented us a room at 1:30 in the morning so I thank them. Lev and I finished around 145 miles today, doin as much of the gravel as was ridable. Past the town of South Plains the dirt roads were still saturated and lots of standing water even. So we left that post office in SP and headed north (eventually, after failing at the dirt roads and spending time scraping down the bikes…again) and got to the town of Silverton. Not much there but they have an Allsup’s so we ate tons of terrible “food” (pronounced ‘fuel’) and started out on the 28 mile run to Tulia. We even said that we might press on to the 60-mile-away town of Dimmitt, but we would make that decision in Tulia.
Please note that it’s 37 degrees and a headwind to fight. About 3 miles outside of town Kevin…

Crash!!

by shrinkboy        www.bikeforums.net

last week at Superdrome in Frisco, our B group (which included everything from fast juniors, guys in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, and this one older fella in his 60s-me) was approaching the first point sprint in a 30 lap points race. we were flat out at 30+mph when a guy up track lost control and came down track in front of me in the sprint lane. it happened in nano-seconds. i went over him and splatted on the concrete apron.
hit my head hard enough to break my helmet (but no head injuries, thank ya), popped my collarbone-stage II separation-lacerated elbow (sutures), massive, multiple contusions from left armpit all the way down to my hip and thigh. abrasions everywhere. i spent a week in a vicodin/valium ibuprofen haze. it was like getting tossed out of a moving truck in my jammies. hardest hit i’ve ever taken, and… (With comments)

Bicycling supportive Township candidates win!

by Maurizio Topini        woodlandscycling.org

Last night, The Woodlands voters took a next step towards creating a better community through bicycling by selecting bicycling supportive candidates.  Township members Gordy Bunch, Mike Bass, Jeff Long and Ed Robb each won their respective races.  Early voting was a key factor in deciding the election.  In fact, more Woodlands residents turned out for early voting in the local election this year than cast ballots altogether in 2012 and 2013.  That includes more people who ride bikes turning out to the polls to make their voices heard.  Over the next year there are several important bicycling initiatives that the Woodlands Township Board will take up; including completion of the Bike & Pedestrian Master Plan, selecting which…

Rolando Roman and Cyclocross Project 2015

By Nicole Ortega / photos Nicole Ortega and Cyclocross Project 2015        texasbikeracing.com

How do you perpetuate the growth and success of the sport you love? You teach those who might be interested at a young age. That’s the mission of Cyclocross Project 2015: to promote an active lifestyle and a lifetime interest in bike riding for kids and families.
Cyclocross Project 2015 is the brainchild of Puerto Rico native Rolando Roman, who conceived it in 2013 after Austin won the bid to host the 2015 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships (CX Nats). He and others involved are accomplishing the project’s objectives by teaching our youth good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, and how to work as a team. Consequently, the project is backed by many bicycle advocates, race promoters, sponsors, ambassadors, parents of the children involved, and the community alike.
Rolando has always been a fitness fanatic. As a boy growing up in a small working-class town in Puerto Rico, he was left to his own devices much of the time because his parents were…

After Election Day: Looking Ahead to the 2015 Lege Session

BikeTexas

The voting is done and the results are in, and it’s a new day in Texas.
We’re headed into the 2015 legislative session with many unknowns. There will be new faces in both chambers come January, and many of those new legislators will need to be educated about people who walk and ride bikes. We’re unsure where the new Governor and Lt. Governor stand on the issues that are important to Texans who use active transportation.
One thing we are sure about: BikeTexas will be fighting for you at the legislature every day of the…

Heat and a Sinus Infection at Chappell Hill RR

The Road Less Traveled

Going into my eighth edition of Chappell Hill (I’m a veteran of this race), I already harbored feelings of anger and frustration.  In 2012 – which happened to be my 19th birthday – I caught a flat right at the winning Move of the Day. The follow vehicle was out-of-sight, and I angrily DNF’d as a result. In 2013, I flatted out in the first 12-miles, before the race even picked up speed. I chased hard after getting a wheel change, in vain. So I DNFed again…my second DNF in just as many years.
2014 would be a different – I was racing solo without teammates, but I also was fighting a bad lingering sinus infection I acquired a few weeks earlier in rainy Belgium. I knew if I had a chance of getting a top result here, I had to be smart and, more importantly, patient with my efforts. Both Texas teams Boneshaker and…

Campus makes biking safe for students

By Liana Solis, Staff Writer        www.dailytoreador.com

With an increase in student population, iking to class and around the Texas Tech campus has grown in popularity.
Craig Cotton, transportation demand management supervisor for parking services, said Tech has implemented changes and added more amenities to increase safety for student bikers and for all students.
“We go above and beyond to make biking convenient for students on campus,” he said. “We had to start making things easier with the enrollment population growing so quickly.”
Cotton said Tech started improving campus for…

Armstrong Signs Up for Time-Trial Charity Cycling Event

By Michael Buteau        www.bloomberg.com

Lance Armstrong signed up to participate in a two-man team time-trial cycling race this weekend, two weeks after he was banned from participating in a South Carolina charity ride.
Armstrong, who has been banned for life from cycling after admitting to doping violations, is on the start list for the Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic, a 31-year-old charity race in New Braunfels, Texas.
Last month, USA Cycling ruled that Armstrong, 43, wasn’t eligible to participate in the third annual Gran Fondo Hincapie in Greenville, South Carolina, because it…

Armstrong to Skip Charity Bicycle Race After Registering

By Michael Buteau        www.bloomberg.com

Lance Armstrong won’t participate in a time-trial cycling race this weekend, two weeks after he was prohibited from participating in a South Carolina charity ride.
Armstrong, who has been banned for life from cycling for doping violations, will skip the Texas race because his time trial partner is injured, Mark Higgins, a spokesman for Armstrong, said in an e-mail.
Armstrong is on the start list for the Tour de Gruene Bicycle Classic, a 31-year-old charity event in New Braunfels, Texas. The 24.6-mile (40 kilometer) time trial for teams of two riders is scheduled for Nov. 9. Higgins said in an e-mail that Armstrong “could ride” in the event because it’s a non-sanctioned race.
Tour de Gruene race director Will Rotzler didn’t…

Lufkin woman pleads guilty to fatal Christmas Day hit-and-run accident involving cyclist

By Leigha Hughes        www.ktre.com

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) –
A 22-year-old Lufkin woman pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist on Christmas Day 2013 shortly before her jury trial was scheduled to start Tuesday.
The jury is now deliberating Jennifer Isabel Mireles’ sentence, and the sentencing portion of the trial is expected to last through Wednesday. The sentencing portion of the trial is taking place in Judge Paul White’s 159th Judicial District Court.
An Angelina County grand jury indicted Mireles on a second-degree felony charge of injury accident involving death back in March.
The state has already called the victim’s girlfriend to the stand, and District Attorney Art Bauereiss showed the jury the victim’s…

Chasing Ghouls (and Points) at Spooky Cross

Words and pics from Adam Spears, Mirage Cycling Team & die-hard Kansas City Royals fan        texasbikeracing.com

So as the calendar turns to the second month of the cyclocross season, it was time to honor the North Texas tradition of SpookyCross. SpookyCross is always on the weekend nearest Halloween and was the first race of the new Southern Cross Series . The weekend gave racers from Texas and neighboring states the chance for some great racing at two different venues. Day one is traditionally held in Oak Cliff at Rosemont Elementary School while day two is held just outside of the downtown Dallas city loop at the Dallas Heritage village. Four races in two days again, eh, let’s try.
Race number one Saturday morning to start at 11:00, sounds about perfect and it was. I went out to load up the car about 8:30 and, wow, our first real cold push of the season with…

Brownsville Community Foundation announces $95,000 in grants

BY STEVE CLARK | STAFF WRITER        www.brownsvilleherald.com

Seven non-profit organizations got a boost Thursday as the Brownsville Community Foundation presented $95,000 in grants to various non-profit community groups.
Representatives from each organization took turns having their picture taken with BCF officials and oversized checks.
Mary Lou Ryan Ray, BCF board president, called it a “great day” while admitting it wasn’t easy choosing among the numerous grant applications submitted.
“It was very difficult to pick,” she said. “We had such a hard time picking that we exceeded our budget. We just couldn’t say no.”
Grants were awarded to: Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center and Good Neighbor Settlement House, $20,000 for a collaborative effort to transport homeless to and from the Ozanam after-hours shelter on the outskirts of town; Ex-Students Association of the University of Texas and Rio Grande Valley Scholars Program, $10,000 for…

Childress, TX to Comanche, OK – Part three of crossing west Texas

By Dirk Anderson        www.crazyguyonabike.com

Mostly rode on the shoulder of US287. Used to be a 4 lane no shoulder busy highway, but several years ago it was turned into a 4 lane divided highway with good wide shoulders. Similar to an interstate but still has small roads coming into and crossing it. Mostly a good ride, but one stretch of crummy chip seal. In towns it goes back to the 4 lane no shoulders so I would find a parallel side street to ride on. Moving ESE with a south wind, so a slight headwind.
Rode through the town of Quanha, named for Quanha Parker. Here is what Wikipedia has to say on him:
“Quanah Parker (Comanche kwana “smell, odor”) (ca. 1845 or 1852 – February 23, 1911) was Comanche/English-American from the Comanche band Quahadi (“Antelope-eaters”), strictly related also to the Nokoni band (“Wanderers” or “Travellers”), his mother’s people, and emerged as a dominant figure, particularly after the Comanches’ final defeat. He was one of the last Comanche chiefs. The US appointed Quanah principal chief of the entire nation once the people had gathered on the reservation and later introduced general elections. Quanah was a Comanche chief, a leader in the Native American Church, and the last leader of the powerful Quahadi band before they surrendered their battle of the Great Plains and went to a reservation in Indian Territory. He was the son of Comanche chief Peta Nocona and…

Purchased a Strada Velo

by hubzone37        westtexasrecumbent.com

Found a 2014 Carbon Bluevelo Strada on Bent Rider Online and drove to Joplin and picked it up.

I have always wanted a velomobile and in August after I rode Dan’s the fever was on. Now velos are expensive with a long waiting list of 6 to 8 months to order one. So in order to afford one I would place advertisement on it but I still needed to purchase one, Utah Trikes sell a plastic Trisled Rotovelo and they are in stock and half the price of a Bluevelo.  I had talked to Steve of San Antonio Bike Tours and he had a Rotovelo for sale and I could come test drive it and I had contacted Velomobile USA in Midland to come visit him. I had told my…

The school bus driver charged after the death of a bicyclist in southeast Houston was driving for YES Prep, a Houston-based public charter school system, a school spokeswoman said.
