About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Carnival of Animals

Bike Noob

We decided it was time to head for Dripping Springs for Sunday’s ride. It’s been months since we were out there, and I had trouble figuring out why, since it’s my favorite place around here to ride.
None of the other B riders joined us, although in fairness, this was the day of the Livestrong ride in Austin, and I knew they were going to have a large field for that. We saw only a few other riders, all near the beginning of our ride.
Several miles into the ride, we rounded a bend and Maggie called out, “Turkeys!” There was a big one on the left side of the road, and another not too far behind. Then we saw another, and another. In all, a gaggle a rafter of eight turkeys scurried behind some nearby bushes to get out of our sight. Maggie speculated that the first one we saw was a…

Made It to 6004

Texbiker.net Posted on October 18, 2014 by Rick AnkrumOctober 18, 2014

This ride got an earlier start than usual. I left home at 10:03. Before leaving I was wondering the temperature was going to warm up but it warmed up nicely once the sun was above the trees. The sky was littered with scattered clouds and a ENE wind at 9 mph. As I was warming up in Sherwood Trails I passed another biker which is very unusual there. I exited Kingwood on Mills Branch Drive and Ford Drive when I changed the route after I started. Normally this route does not have much traffic but today it was busy but the cars passed me with plenty of room.

I was able to ride at a good pace and built up my average speed sooner than usual. The long uninterrupted stretches of road helps. Three times I had it up to 16.3 mph. I stopped at Stripes on FM1314 and as I pulled in my average speed was 16.3 and as I coasted to the front of the store it dropped to 16.2 mph. I stayed at Stripes for about 25 minutes. Leaving I was able to get my average back up to 16.3 and kept it there until 31 miles into the 35.25 mile long ride. Once I get into Kingwood the streets quickly slow me down and the average speed drops. It ended up at 15.9 mph.

My year to date miles increased to 6004. This leave 496 miles to reach my goal of 6500. If the weather continues to hold up I could surpass that. So far I biked 164.21 miles this week and 473.17 miles this month.

The “New Caney – Gene Campbell Road” route is the second most frequent one I ride. In the ride comparison table below are all of the rides this year. Next year the Grand Parkway construction is supposed to wind down at Community Drive. This will widen my route selection going north.

Tomorrow I will not be able to ride due to a church meeting. The weather will be nice for many days.

Camino205, October 4 – The Rest of the Story

By Dave Morrow, Ride Director        texasbikeracing.com

There is an old saying in bike racing: “You make your own luck.” I well remember the prestigious mountain bike race where I came in second because my front derailleur cable frayed and broke over the course of the race. I was passed in the last two miles while I was stuck in my small front chain ring, unable to go fast enough. My bad ‘luck’ was actually my failure to identify that the cable was suspect and replace it before the race. I made my own luck and did not win. Sometimes there are greater forces than ourselves that decide things.
For the inaugural Camino205 gravel grinder in Palestine, TX, Lady Luck was with us. Or perhaps the weather god Zeus was smiling upon us. However it happened, on race day, we lucked out – it was about 60 degrees when we started, with light winds and sunny skies, warming into the low 80s. Two days later…

Switching Gears Cyclery opening in Lake Highlands

by Christina Hughes Babb        lakehighlands.advocatemag.com

The charming bicycle supply and repair boutique Switching Gears Cyclery is closing its Fair Park location at the end of State Fair season and will open in Lake Highlands, hopefully in November.
Lake Highlands couple Andee Pittman-Clark and Colin Clark opened Switching Gears near Fair Park, where they have thrived; now they are planning a move to the former First National Bank building at Shoreview and Ferndale.
Andee says she and Colin will close shop in Fair Park Oct. 19 and begin moving into the new digs as soon as they finish a few repairs and receive the Certificate of Occupancy from the city. Sometime in…

School bus driver charged in fatal hit-and-run denies hitting anyone

By Rebecca Elliott        www.chron.com

The school bus driver charged in the hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist in southeast Houston Wednesday did not know she hit someone, her attorney said Friday.
Phyllis Ann Booker, 54, appeared in court for a brief hearing following her arrest in the death of bicyclist Bobby Brooks, 56, for which she was charged with failure to stop and render aid.
“She didn’t realize she was involved in an accident and hit anything or anyone, which is why she continued on her bus route,” Booker’s attorney, James Alston, told reporters following the hearing. “She didn’t realize anything had happened.”
Prosecutors told state District Judge Renee Magee that Booker denied hitting anything on…
