So much for compensating for the wrong length chain. I was riding on the return leg home and tried to shift onto the big front ring. Nothing happened. I changed gears back to what I was using and increased the cadence to try and compensate. I was trying to get my average speed up to 15.6 mph. I finally reached 15.6 mph as I exited the causeway and turned into Atascocita Shores. From there to home the average speed went up and down finally settling at 15.5 mph when I got home. The last 8 miles is residential streets with numerous stop signs and traffic crossings.
Now I will look at the front derailleur to get it working again. Maybe the adjusting screws got messed up or the cable is frozen.
I left home at 11:10 under a partly cloudy sky. The Houston Chronicle weather man called the weather summer lite. It was 87 when I finished with a 6 mph SE breeze. After riding the MTB yesterday I felt better riding the Stradalli RP-14 today. The route to Huffman and back was 33.8 miles. I did see two women bikers as I was riding east over Lake Houston. They were going west.
Mile markers:
57.21 miles for the week
198.56 miles for October
5729.58 miles for the year
Today’s ride was the 49th of the year on the “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route out of 165 riding days. I plan on biking tomorrow with the weather repeating today.
For some reason the Garmin Live Tracking stopped while I was riding around the 28 mile point. I restarted and it worked until I got home. Another problem was it did not stop when I stopped the ride timer on the Garmin Edge 510. I have noticed the Android app was updated recently. Maybe this is a bug?
Ten Longview firefighters broke 250 yards of new ground recently as they extended the first public, off-road biking trail while simultaneously creating a fire break path.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department, Longview Bicycling Club and the Longview Fire Department are working to elongate Grace Creek Mountain Bike Trail from Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center to behind an auto dealership and former movie theater on Texas 31 in Longview.
A fire break path is a trail that keeps a fire from…
Shavano Park is a city where joggers and biking enthusiasts looking for a little early-morning exercise have to share the roadways with businessmen and women getting an early start for work, and officials would like that to change.
“There are no hike and bike trails in the city now,†said Mike Janssen, a member of the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission who chairs a working group charged with developing a proposal that would correct that problem. “We don’t even have a lot of sidewalks.â€
His working group, which has been examining solutions since the beginning of the year, has…

When he left Carthage on Monday, Steve Laskey was 139 days into an epic bicycle tour that he hopes will see him touch all 48 contiguous states in the U.S. before Thanksgiving.
The numbers are intimidating — he had ridden 5,400 miles as of Monday and he expects he’ll have ridden between 7,500 and 8,000 miles when he’s done.
Laskey, 52, is on his third major bike tour in 18 years and he’s dedicating this tour to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which provides dream-come-true trips or gifts or other assistance to desperately sick children.
Monday was day 139 of this tour and he anticipates he’ll be on the road another 53 or so days before…

First ride since the Pineywoods Purgatory. I wanted to ride yesterday but about the time I was going to get ready a rain storm moved through the area. The weather radar showed a line of storms moving from the north but magically as they arrived the wind kicked up and the rain only amounted to .09″ on my weather station. This was enough to wet all the streets and with the drop in temperature they did not dry out fast.
Sunday my thigh muscles were really sore from all of the hills in Lufkin. I don’t think I could have turned the pedals if I wanted to. I took the time to install the new pedals on my Motobecane 700 HT MTB, switch the tires to Performance Versa Trac 26 x 2.0 and remove the rear rack. The pedals (Shimano PD-M540) work much smoother than the old ones. I can unclip with a lot less effort and no sticking like the old ones. The tires run quieter and smoother on the pavement and asphalt on the greenbelt trails in Kingwood. With yesterday’s rain I did not go on any dirt today.
Kingwood has over 70 miles of trails but I only rode on 23.41 miles today. I want to see how the changes affected riding on the MTB and I have to say they were positive. One thing I need to fix is the front brake stopping. The disk brake grabs the disk firmly when I am stopped but when I am moving it slides and does not stop the bike like it should. I don’t want it too grabby or a header will be in my future. Using both brakes stops the bike smoothly. I have biked Kingwood trails 5 times this year.
Another reason I rode the MTB was the Stradalli chain is 3 links too long (I counted the old chain to find the difference) which allows the chain to slip in the smaller gears on the rear cassette. I ordered a KMC Missing Link “Opener” tool and extra Missing Link connectors but they will not arrive for several days. I can compensate by not using the smaller gears on the rear and use the “big” ring on the front. I will probably do that on tomorrow’s ride.
The trails were mostly dry but in places they were wet. Some places were covered in mud but the hardest time came riding in the shade with sunglasses with the trail covered in pine needles. It was hard to see the concrete trail with the pine needles. I thought about removing the sunglasses but didn’t. The trails are rougher than the streets, generally. I felt worked over from the bouncing and dodging the bumps which is a big difference from road biking. I think this may be one reason I favor road biking.
I am watching the weather in Marshall on Saturday. We may drive there for the Tour de Fireant if the weather is good. Today the forecast is 88 and partly cloudy with a 75% chance of rain late evening. If this holds we will give it a go.
The female bicycle rider involved in a hit-and-run incident Saturday afternoon has died from her injuries.

State Road Race Championships, my husband and I caught the finale of the Elite women’s 2014 World Championship road race. Marianne Vos, Emma Johansson, Elisa Longo Borghini, and Lizzie Armitstead—representing the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, and Great Britain—get a gap on the last climb, but with roughly 1K remaining, they slow, looking at each other and over their shoulders, no one willing to work for another’s victory. As a spectator, it’s agonizing to see the move fail, all that talent and firepower just sitting back and setting the table for the pack of hungry sprinters behind. When the break is enveloped by the chase group of 11, the four contenders try to reshuffle themselves into a good position, but it’s too late. Vos, the most dominant female cyclist of our time, starts the sprint early and visibly fades. The…
