About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Apparently this is not how one patches a tire

by Chem007        www.reddit.com

I recently got a patch kit because it was cheap and near the check out stand. I didn’t have a spare tube on this ride. I thought I was riding tubeless so I didn’t think to even check (this was my first mistake). No internet in the mountains and no instructions in the kit so this was my best guess. Rode the remaining 35 miles on this with top speeds of…

Riders and Their Rigs : Daniel Curtin’s Trek Boone

texasbikeracing.com

Trek’s Boone CX bike is a marriage of their redesigned cyclocross geometry first seen in their Crockett aluminum cross bike and the vibration damping decoupler seen on the Domane road bike. Compared to prior offerings from the Waterloo, WI brand, steering is much more nimble and the overall feel of the bike is more race-oriented. Stands to reason as Katie Compton had design input on the Crockett and she…

Road Trip To Corpus Christi For Conquer The Coast

Cycling Space City

Decided to break out from Houston and get some riding in a new area of Texas by doing the Conquer The Coast ride in Corpus Christi.  The 65 mile course is a loop from downtown Corpus Christi through Port Aransas, Mustang Island, and back through Corpus Christi.  The ride included a ferry ride to get us from Aransas Pass to Port Aransas (a first for me on a ride). The weather report had me worried the ride would get cancelled due to lightning ,but we ended up with just a slight shower that lasted about 10-15 minutes, on a…

No Fallen Trees Blocked Me From Seeing The Scenic Trinity River In Gateway Park Today

Durango Texas

I did not manage to get myself a sufficient endorphin dose via this morning’s long aerobically stimulating pool bout, so around noon I headed west to Gateway Park to roll my wheels and take a picture at my favorite Trinity River photo op location.
What you see in picture is really what the Trinity River looks like under the bright, clear blue sky. I used no special lighting effect or…

Update: Texas Transportation Commission Votes on Transportation Alternatives Program Funding

BikeTexas

People who ride bikes in Texas have stepped up again and again to communicate with TxDOT and show that Texans who care about biking and walking are strong. And TxDOT keeps letting us down.
Back in August, we told you about the public comment period for proposed new rules for the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).  You responded to the tune of over 500 comments to TxDOT asking them to adjust the rules to make sure TAP funding in Texas is going to its best possible use.
Last week, we saw the adjusted TAP rules and our reaction was mixed. Because of your voice, the…

Hidden Gems

by bill cullins        Team San Angelo

Last week’s article about the fitness venues around Lake Nasworthy (http://bcullins.blogspot.com/2014/09/lake-areas-need-improvements.html) generated several questions about the Nature Preserve Trail on Spillway Road and the adjacent Spillway Park open space at the end of Spillway Road.
Compared to the other parks and open space around Lake Nasworthy, these two areas get very little usage.  That may be because many people don’t know where they are located or what the areas offer for casual cyclists, hikers, runners or walkers.
Even though these areas are off the beaten path compared to locations like the swim beach and the KOA loop, they are hidden gems and offer some natural amenities that heavier-used areas just don’t provide.
The Nature Preserve Trail is a scenic one-mile loop that begins at a small parking area on Spillway road. To get there, go south on Knickerbocker Blvd past the airport and then turn right onto Spillway Road just before the Twin Buttes dam.  Follow Spillway for two miles to the Nature Trail parking lot which will be…

Cyclists Ride to Conquer the Coast (Video)

www.kristv.com

CORPUS CHRISTI – Cyclists from all around took part in the 11th Annual Conquer the Coast Saturday morning.
Hundreds of cyclists chose between 10, 25 or 65 mile bike rides that went from Whataburger Field all the way to Port Aransas and back.
Cyclists, like Nan Borden, say these events remind drivers they have to share the road. “Corpus Christi drivers don’t realize that when you are biking you just can’t just stop or there might be something in the way and you have to come out. They have to give us three to four feet and they don’t…

The Texas Crew with Ginny
A strong team of Texans helps crown crit champions at Masters Nationals.
Y’all would have been proud of the team of Texans who showed up for the crit races at Masters Nationals in Ogden, Utah. From the racers themselves to the friends and families along for the proverbial ride, there was a real sense of camaraderie from the Lone Star State.
The collective group of racers were not teammates per se; they didn’t all wear the same kit, race for the same shop, or always train together. No, this was a smash-up group of cyclists who over the years have competed against each other in one way or another, be it in the Thursday nighters, during weekend training rides, or at the many races throughout the state each year. This ‘team’ included decades-long racers, national champions, guys who…

Bike Noob

Only two other B riders showed up for our club ride Sunday, and we decided to head to Creedmoor. This staple of our Sunday routes had been forgotten lately; in fact, I hadn’t ridden it since June. The others were looking forward to the ride, too.
After not riding a route for awhile, some changes are bound to crop up. Most of the ones we ran into had to do with road construction. Our main way east out of our neighborhood narrows to a two-lane, unstriped, country-style road for a short stretch. Then, at a T-intersection, we turn left, and then pick up that road again at the…

Chiefs team up on bicycle trails

By Christina R. Garza Staff Writer        www.valleymorningstar.com

The Brownsville Police and Fire departments routinely work together to serve the community, but recently Fire Chief Lenny Perez and Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez have teamed up to work on their fitness while taking advantage of Brownsville’s bicycle trails.
Both men said they began cycling during childhood but returned to the sport for its various health benefits.
Rodriguez said he started riding about three years ago with an informal cycling group made up of baby boomers who jokingly refer to themselves as “Rugrats.”
According to Rodriguez, the group routinely rides on…

Support the Urban Trails Master Plan

bicyclesportshop.wordpress.com

One of the best things about riding a bike in Austin these days is our growing network of off-street paths and trails. Have you had a chance to ride the new boardwalk on Lady Bird Lake? How about the new Southern Walnut Creek Trail? These are both amazing cycling facilities that you can ride through some of the most beautiful areas of Austin and never encounter a motor vehicle, perfect for outings with those who aren’t quite ready to take it to the streets, and a ton of fun for cyclists of every type!
