About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Thinking Time, Not Miles

Bike Noob

It occurred to me the other day that once again, my riding has settled comfortably in the 25-mile range. Oh sure, I’ve got some longer rides under my belt — but nowhere near the metric centuries I did semi-frequently a couple of years ago. It seems that lately, my rides have been stuck in a range of between 23-27 miles.
A few years ago, I bemoaned the fact that I rode so many 25-milers. I felt that I was shortchanging myself — not putting in enough effort to improve as a cyclist. And I did work to get those long rides to longer distances. But now, I hardly ever think about distance.
In fact, if I pay attention at all, I pay attention to the number of minutes I spend on my bike. A long ride is anything over two hours. At my 14…

We all know the expression—
“You’ve got to get back on the horse!”Well, sometimes it’s a horse, but it my case it was a bike.
It always starts the same way: a tickle in your throat, a nagging runny nose, an annoying case of the sneezes and before you know it, you are the bearer of a miserable cold. Almost without fail this happens at quite possibly the most inconvenient time: when you are gearing up for a big ride or your next goal is right upon you.  This year, I have become all too familiar with getting back on that bike.
On New Year’s Day, I had a sore throat that I just couldn’t shake.A couple of rounds of antibiotics to treat “strep throat” with no avail, led to a series of tests culminating with a biopsy of a nodule on my thyroid.
My doctor called me in on April 1st—yes really, April Fool’s Day, to inform me that I had thyroid cancer.  This led to an interesting post on Facebook followed by at least two dozen calls and text messages to confirm my prank, or…

This Saturday we have a special ride that I hope will be the first of a regular monthly ride.  We are going to do about a 50 mile ride that will start from Cups & Cones and will end at the Oasis Brewing Company.  Another special treat is that this Saturday is the first day of Oktoberfest the Oasis Brewing Co will be featuring a seasonal brew and the Noble Pig will offer a special German menu.
Both the brewery and Noble Pig will be open for us so we can roll in whenever we want.  The first beer will only be $1 if you are in spandex.  We can bring our bikes up to the…

Sticky Trails With A Fallen Tree Led Me To The Gateway Park Trinity River Vision Boondoggle Master Plan Propaganda

Durango Texas

I was in a bad mood this morning, an after effect of a raging political printer debate last night on Facebook which left me exhausted.
A long swim, early this morning, under the sliver of light provided by a skinny crescent moon did little to alleviate my bad mood.
So, I decided some fast wheel rolling on the Gateway Park mountain bike trails would be just what the Mood Doctor would prescribe if I had a…

Days 14, 15, & 16
Sorry we haven’t posted more in the last couple of days but there just really hasn’t been much to talk about. On Sunday we had a wonderful day of rest and spent time in worship with the folks at Maranatha Baptist in Globe, AZ. Monday we got up and headed out to Bylas, AZ with very little excitement. We stayed last night at the Lutheran Church in Bylas and enjoyed a breathtaking sunset during diner. Today we rode on and stopped in Safford, AZ at the Hot Wheels Cycles Shop. It was the first day we had of rain, but the cool temperatures were very welcome! We put on our rain gear to ride and only got a little wet. We learned that across the street from the bike shop there was am ACE Hardware store and a man who worked their was a Warmshowers.org host. He…

Fort Worth police charge a fee to release stolen bikes

by Janet St. James, WFAA

FORT WORTH — Biking is a family affair for the five Breedlove children, except for 11-year-old Ellie, whose bike – along with her father’s – was stolen in broad daylight, right off the front porch.
“I thought I might never see it again,” Ellie said, “and I had just gotten a bike that fits my size.”
Fort Worth police did recover the two bikes. Then, the family received a call with some not-so-good news.
“And we were told there was going to be a fee for picking up to pick up each bike,” Megan Breedlove said. “We said, ‘Well, it’s not our fault the bikes were stolen. Why do…

New Premier ‘Cross Series Heats Up Racing’s Coolest Season
PRESS RELEASE
Can you feel the days getting shorter and the Summer heat finally abating? Enter cooler Fall temperatures and cyclo-cross in all its colorful glory. Combining fierce competition and family-friendly fun, some call this the best racing season of the year; they would be absolutely correct. Small wonder that cyclo-cross is the only growing racing discipline within USA Cycling. The stars are aligning over what’s sure to be a most exciting 2014/15 season in Texas and surrounding states.
Momentum is building for the US National Elite and Master Championships returning to Texas in January after nearly a 40 year hiatus. The week prior, Texas will host its first ever UCI-sanctioned CX event in the Dallas area. Thankfully, there’s plenty of local and regional racing on the calendar to rev up your engines and fine-tune your skills.
The South is a recognized hotspot for expansion of cyclo-cross with increasing ranks of racers and a multitude of worthy venues on which to showcase their talents. While grassroots events are great for…

Austin B-cycle  installed a station at East Sixth and Pedernales streets yesterday. Two more will open today – one at East Sixth and Robert Martinez streets, and one at East Fifth and Broadway streets.
That makes a total of 45 stations for the system, which opened with 11 stations last…
