About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bike-Work Balance

Bike Noob

We finally had a taste of fall here over the weekend. It only lasted a day and a half, but the hint of the new season got me taking stock of some recent developments around here.
I’ve really cut back on my riding. The start of the new school year does that to me every year, but this time around it’s tougher. You see, in addition to being an instructor, this semester I’m also a student. I’m enrolled in a class for faculty that teaches us how to prepare a class for delivery online.
Now, you’d think for a blogger that wouldn’t be too difficult. But this class is far more rigorous than I expected. That’s good — it means we won’t take it lightly. And it’s really opened my eyes to some of the…

According to Dave Morrow, organizer for the Camino205, “Cyclists in the upper Midwest have been putting on gravel grinder events for about 10 years. One of the most notable being the Dirty Kanza, which traverses the Flint Hills National Grasslands in Kansas and has over 1,200 riders.”

Oryx cycling tour ‘elevates’ to become premier event at Fort Bliss, organizers say

By David Burge / El Paso Times

FORT BLISS >> The Oryx Challenge Bike Tour keeps getting bigger and better, organizers and participants say.
On Sunday morning, 500 cyclists participated in the fourth annual Oryx, a noncompetitive bike ride that raises money for local USO programs. That’s about 100 more cyclists than last year, organizers said.
The bike ride started and ended at the Freedom Crossing shopping center on West Fort Bliss. In the past, the USO center on East Fort Bliss served as the tour’s headquarters.
But “we’ve had such success with everything — sponsors, the…

Big Views on the Road Bike in Big Bend

by Bronwen Gregory        www.afar.com

I am utterly smitten with Big Bend National Park and it’s varied, stunning landscape. In early September I headed down to get in some quiet road cycling and exploring, since the busy season (and vehicle traffic) doesn’t pick up until the October through April months. The heat can be extreme this time of year since you’re on the border of Texas and Mexico and this is a desert, but I lucked out and had some cooler weather this time around.
Two nations meet here in West Texas and the mighty Rio Grande serves as the boundary. Drastic changes in elevation lend to create an out of this world, varied micro-climate experience while you pedal through your day and you’re rewarded with vistas and…

Sunday October 5th Patriot / National Day of Service Ride

Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club

Sunday, October 5th  Meet at 8a.m. @ Brackenridge Park @ Joske’s Pavilion Celebrate Patriot Day / National Day of Service and Remembrance with an easy bicycle ride from Brackenridge Park’s Joske’s Pavilion along quiet downtown streets, through the Pearl Brewery and King William area. This is an informal celebration of Patriot Day and the National Day of Service and Remembrance. All are welcome.   We will pause to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11/01 with a private tour of the San Antonio Fire Museum.  The museum is at the Central Fire Station behind the Alamo. Our tour will start around 9:30-10am.  Feel free to have non riding family members meet us there. After the tour we’ll continue riding back up to Brackenridge Park while it is still relatively cool and the streets are relatively quiet.   Bring a snack, decorate your bike and…

Lake Areas Need Improvements

by Bill Cullins               Team San Angelo

Read through the city’s Lake Nasworthy Master Plan and you’ll notice that biking, hiking, running and walking are described as the most popular non-motorized recreational activities that take place in the areas surrounding the lake.
The park areas, open space and roads around Nasworthy provide an almost-perfect venue for outdoor fitness activities (we’ll get to the “almost” part later).
Lakeside areas such as the swim beach (Mary E Lee Park), the KOA loop, Spring Creek Park and Middle Concho Park are all used extensively by cyclists, hikers, runners and walkers. The lake parks also serve as starting points for cyclists and…

Houston, We Have Less of a Problem

ByIan Dille        www.bicycling.com

Thanks to a bike-loving mayor and tireless advocates—and some postride tacos—a sprawling, traffic-clogged city transformed itself into America’s most improved cycling town

From the back of a Hummer, a man pulls out a single-speed with lime green rims. A full-suspension mountain bike emerges from a Ford Excursion. From the bed of a friend’s pickup truck, I remove my own bike. We’ve come to this parking lot in downtown Houston for the monthly Critical Mass ride, a mostly well-mannered protest that draws as many as 3,000 cyclists from across the city. We’ve driven here because, at 600 square miles, sheer distance can prevent bike commuting in Houston, and—given the rash of recent cyclist fatalities, 27 over the last five years, with few drivers held accountable—even the bravest and most experienced cyclists admit that riding in this city, alone, feels risky.
But tonight, for 15 miles, we will own the roads of the nation’s fourth-largest city. Following the 2007–2009 recession, Houston boomed. Led by the oil and gas industry, the city added two new…

So what happened in Texas?

by alexthepuffin        alexbikes.wordpress.com

The last time I wrote on this blog was back in February as I was planning my bike trip across Texas. Here’s a quick review.
The ‘why on earth would you bike in Texas?’ question continued well into the trip and after I got back. My values and political views don’t match a typical Texan’s, although typical is part of the problem.
Here’s something I learned: political views don’t really show through that much when you’re just visiting somewhere. Sure, there were a lot of pickup trucks with gun racks and wildly xenophobic views of Hispanics. If you can look past that (without forgiving it), you’ll find the people caring and genuine. And you’ll have quite an experience.
I learned a lot about nothingness and loneliness. Often there were no cars for an hour. There were no trees to ruin the views. I’ve never gone so long in my life without ever talking to someone. Emptiness. You should…

Edward Jones’ Tour de Ted Coming to Waco Oct. 17

www.kxxv.com

Waco is one of nine cities participating in a Texas bike tour commemorating the life of Ted Jones, who was instrumental in opening Edward Jones’s first branch office, according to Financial Advisor Donna Phelps.
The nine-city tour, beginning in Houston on Oct. 11 and concluding in Dallas/Fort Worth on Oct. 19, is aptly named Tour de Ted – Ride the Lone Star.
The bike tour celebrates the life of the firm’s second managing partner, Ted Jones, and commemorates his unique vision of serving clients in local communities.
Two years ago, Tour de Ted followed a 13-state route that traced the path of a telegraph wire that stretched from Colorado to St. Louis in the early days of the firm, which was…

White Oak Bayou Trail
