About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hot All the Way to Huffman – Eastgate

Texbiker.net Posted on August 16, 2014 by Rick AnkrumAugust 16, 2014

Another hot day for biking. Part of this I could avoid if I started earlier. When I worked Saturday rides were the long ride of the week and in order to get the ride in and do some chores and be with my wife I would start around 7 AM or earlier. I have also started a ride at 6 AM on a Sunday to bike 20+ miles before church and the heat. Old age and retirement changes the necessity to do this I guess.

The ride began at 10:11 heading to Huffman-Eastgate Road east of Huffman and just a few hundred yards short of the Liberty County line. I wanted to ride 35+ miles and actually biked 37.54 miles. It was 88 degrees with 74% humidity and the heat index was 103. It didn’t take long to start sweating but the air moving past me help to dry up the perspiration.

Riding through Kings Forest I saw a man and woman riding mountain bikes but without helmets. They said hi. Not long after that I saw two women on road bikes in Town Center. The last biker sighting was on Fairlake Drive. This man had a flat rear tire. I stopped to check on him. He said this was the second flat of the ride and he didn’t have another tube. Before I could offer to help he said his wife was on the way to pick him up. We talked about the debris on the bridge over Lake Houston and the flats it can cause. I resumed the ride and he continued walking toward FM1960.

Wind wasn’t that strong but it held my speed down at times. I ended up averaging 15.7 mph. The places where the wind helped was on FM9160 east of FM2100. I was able to make up some time I lost when I was riding into the wind.

I got back home at 1:13. By then the temperature was a balmy 97, 51% humidity thanks to the SW wind, 112 heat index and partly cloudy sky.

Yesterday as I neared home a helicopter was hovering close to where I was biking. It looked life a Life Flight helicopter. It moved a few times and then seemed to leave. Today in the newspaper I read that a house fire happened around 12:45 and a person was taken to the hospital. This wasn’t too far from the streets I was riding on. Today I rode past the house and it has some damage and you can see where the smoke and fire came out. A man was standing in the front yard and I waved as I rode by.

When I got home today I cleaned up my Motobecane 700HT mountain bike before going in the house. Earlier this week I read a blog post from the Bike Noob about how he started riding his mountain bike recently to get some variety. I plan on doing that tomorrow. I biked 236.34 miles this week which allows for some different riding. I am well on my to reaching my August goal of 845 miles with 561.46 miles so far. Year to date I stand at 4774 miles. I have rode 15 out of 16 days so far too. It is time for a change. The weather is supposed to repeat today’s.

Cell Phone Driving Ban May Include Cyclists

by Brandon Mulder        www.austinpost.org

Over the last few months Austin officials have held the City’s distracted driving ordinance under the microscope hoping to find a way to make it more enforceable. Last week the Public Safety Commission endorsed recommendations to ban all hands-on cell phone use for motor vehicles and bicyclists, which has some cyclists up in arms.
The current ordinance bans all texting while driving a moving vehicle, but the ordinance has done little to suppress the texting-while-driving epidemic. According to APD assistant chief Brian Manley, the reason for this could be because the ordinance is…

I can’t believe it’s the middle of August! It has been a very mild summer temperatures-wise. Judging by the great attendance at some rides, I think everybody is taking advantage of this mild summer to do some good riding.
The club is moving along thanks to the work of many volunteers. We have great people working hard to put together your rides week after week. One of them is our ride chair Andrew Hinck, who has been doing an awesome job in this role for over 2 years. He has developed an interesting mix of rides for a 6-weeks schedule, recruited ride starters, mapped new routes, and…

Biking to the North Is Not Cooler

Texbiker.net Posted on August 15, 2014 by Rick AnkrumAugust 15, 2014

I switched to a northerly ride today going to New Caney, west on FM1485 to Gene Campbell Road. FM1314 brought me to the Stripes station for the usual rest stop. After the stop I continued on through Briar Tree, Oakhurst and back to Kingwood. The cooler weather has left us and the southeast breeze brought a little higher humidity making the ride a warm one. I left home at 10:28 with a partly cloudy sky, 92 degrees, 65% humidity, 108 heat index and a light breeze. After biking 35.12 miles I got back home at 1:19 and the weather was 94 degrees, 57% humidity, 108 heat index. The breeze was 5 mph which was good for biking but didn’t help cool me down when I stopped at Stripes.

The Grand Parkway right away clearing is making progress. To the west of FM1314 the ground is almost clear and to the north of FM1314 there are big piles of ground up trees and the chipper is running. Yesterday in the Kingwood Observer there was an article about another new commercial development coming called Kingwood Creek. I asked my wife what she thought was causing all of this building and such. She said The Woodlands is nearing it’s end and the new Exxon headquarters probably are some of the reasons. For many years I wondered why The Woodlands enjoyed all of the activity and Kingwood was left out. Well they found us and things are jumping.

This will impact the bicycling route I use eventually. I did see the Kingwood Creek plans call for 15 miles of bicycle trails but I am not sure how you get that many miles in the area they will be in.

Today when I was at Stripes the Harley Davidson man I talk with was there. He said he hadn’t seen me for several days and I replied that I had been biking on different routes. Another man told me he needed to get more exercise while I sat at the pumps resting and eating some food. I invited him to join me.

Riding the route today was not much different from the the other times. I stopped at a Texaco station near Gene Campbell Road to refill my water bottle. On my previous visit the lady clerk showed me the water dispenser so that I didn’t need to use the restroom sink. Today she said she tried riding her bicycle and only got a 1/2 mile from home. She ended up walking her bicycle back because she was too tired to ride. Her husband told her that wasn’t much exercise.

I almost reached 200 miles for the week coming in at 198.79 after today’s ride. With 2 more days I could reach 250 or more. August miles are getting closer to my 845 mile goal standing at 532.91. And year to date I have rode 4736 miles.

Since I have paired the Garmin Edge 510 with my Nexus 5 phone the mileage and averaged speed on Garmin Connect are much closer to the results Golden Cheetah calculates. Also it is nice for the Edge 510 to upload the ride to Garmin Connect automatically at the end of the ride.

The weather forecast for Saturday: 96 and clear. Nothing bad about that for riding.

Cyclists to ride in 8-mile ‘Vigilance Ride’ on Sunday

Written by Faith Harper        www.tylerpaper.com

Cyclists will ban together Sunday to ride in support of several local riders who have been injured on East Texas roadways in the past month.
The eight-mile “Vigilance Ride” will begin at 3 p.m. at Elite Bicycles, 610 Shelley Drive, said Cori Moore, organizer of the event.
Mrs. Moore said the ride is not a protest, but rather a show of camaraderie within the biking community for its fellow riders.
“This is not a protest ride in any way, shape or form,” she said. “We are not coming out aggressively, and we are not trying to surprise anyone, and we are not trying to take up major roads for a long span of time.”
The route will bring the cyclists on Old Jacksonville Highway and Broadway Avenue, as well as utilize the city’s marked bike path for a portion of the ride. It will loop back to Elite, where there will be water for the riders.
The cyclists will be escorted by the Tyler Police Department to ensure safety and visibility.
Mrs. Moore said the pace will be lax, so inexperienced riders or those on…

Discovering New Routes

Bike Noob

I’m in the middle of a two-week break before classes resume, and I’ve been getting out on the bike almost every day. Now, in my area, that could lead to a lot of repetition of routes. In fact, some cycling friends have complained about getting bored riding the same few routes over and over.
We’re somewhat constrained, geographically. There aren’t many roads to the west of us. To go south, we can take only one road. Going east or southeast is okay, although our route options are limited there, too…but we use those roads more often. A rugged creek valley blocks off our access to the north, and if we want to head for downtown or…

Featured Cyclist – Ashley Knox

www.wheelbrothers.com

Every once in awhile, we hear a story that inspires us. A story that represents exactly what it means to be a true Wheel Brother, and an amazing cyclist. We heard Ashely’s story a few weeks ago, and were moved by her passion.  After signing up for the Cactus & Crude MS150 and training for only 2 days, she went out and dominated the race using a rental bike and running shoes! With such passion and determination, we just had to get to know this awesome athlete!
Featured Cyclist
1. How long have you been a cyclist (or other kind of athlete)?
I don’t know that I would call myself a cyclist, Tuesday before the MS150, Velocity Bike Shop in Lubbock was kind enough to loan me a fantastic bike for the ride, fit it properly and show me how to use the gears & brakes, etc. I have a very kind friend that loaned me everything else, aside from my own brooks running shoes. I did two training rides of less than 20 miles that week, and Saturday morning we drove to Midland for the Cactus & Crude with the Carney Men Team!
I was an athlete in high school, but that was years ago. In March of this year I decided to take charge of myself and change my lifestyle by beginning at boot camp in Lubbock with a great gym, Training Ground. I have made…

PBA Eastside Ride…explained by Andrew, Ferd & Brad G.

By Andrew Hoodwin        Plano Bicycle Association

Most of us know about the OAS ride, that it’s been in existence for quite a long time and only really has had two leaders. First there was Mike Boyle and for the last 18+ years, Alan Hasty has been in charge, a true Ironman.  They probably go much faster and longer than most of us, sometimes travelling 70 miles.  Those of us that have/had inspirations and goals would someday like to at least start with their group… OAS is no secret to this club.
On the other hand, not too many know of a weekly ride we host that has been around for almost as long as OAS and has quite a long history of graduated riders and many tales to boot. It’s been around since at least the early 90’s and is featured not only on our website but also on GDB’s list of rides.  No one on our…
