About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

National Road Championships

by Michael Pincus (Pearland, TX)        mpincus.blogspot.com

Very few races are as important as the National Championships in my mind. Ever since my first National Championship race in 2008 as a 14-year-old Junior, I knew that this was a big deal. Winning this championship is more then just a title; it also means that I would be able to wear my country’s colors in races for an entire year. This is a great honor that I witnessed first-hand in 2012 as a wingman for…

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – The third annual Cycle for Hope took place on Saturday, in an effort to raise money and awareness for University Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital and Southwest Cancer Center.
The event involves a seven mile bike ride and 5K run/walk around the Texas Tech and UMC campuses. Several local vendors set up for the event along with a child’s play area and bike course.
Co-director Jason Morton started this event with other cycling enthusiasts.
“It was really important for me,” Morton said, “because five years ago I was…

A Beginner Mountain Bike Clinic

Bike Noob

As you know, I’ve been thrashing around on my mountain bike a bit this year. Nothing fancy, but mostly finding some decent singletrack trails surprisingly close to home.
But it has become apparent to me that my lack of technique is preventing me from riding the way I’d like to. So when I saw a notice that the Austin Ridge Riders mountain bike club were hosting a beginner’s clinic before their Sunday morning ride, I signed up.
I’ve had goo luck with clinics before. When I started road biking years ago, I attended one, and was very pleased with what I took away from…

Not So Easy Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2014 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2014

It started out like I would have to work on an easy ride. The legs just didn’t want to push the pedals easily. I rode to Huffman and because it is Sunday I shortened the route to 29.79 miles. Until I got to Huffman the wind seemed to be pushing against me no matter which direction I rode. After an 11 minute stop at the Huffman Chevron (the real name is JJ’s Chevron) I headed west on FM1960. For some reason now the legs had more power so I shifted into a higher gear and picked up the speed. The wind was more cooperative now and I rode at 18 to 20 mph until I got into the residential streets in Atascocita and Kingwood. Overall I averaged 15.6 mph which is much higher than I thought it would be based on the first 18.5 miles to Huffman. Intervals 4 and 5 were at the higher average speed to overcome my slower intervals before.

The weather continues to be mild for August. 83 degrees (72% humidity) when I rolled out at 11:54 and 89 (62% humidity) when I returned at 2:17. The sky was mostly cloudy and I felt cool when the sun was behind the clouds. That wind I battled to Huffman was really not that bad coming from the north at 4 mph. Monday the forecast says 89 degrees and partly cloudy with a 30% chance of rain. I should be able to ride then.

Only one other biker was out today. We exchanged waves at the west end of the Lake Houston Causeway on FM1960. I was riding west and he was going east.

Mileage wrap up:

  • 217.7 miles for the week
  • 101.01 miles for August (744 miles to go for August)
  • 4313 miles for the year

Rolling into Town
New to town in Keller Town Center is Knobbies & Slicks, a shop for cycling enthusiasts of all skill levels. Owners Bud and Debbie Zarsk say they moved their bike shop in June from Colleyville to take advantage of the easy access to paths, as well as to partner with the city to promote a biking culture. Offerings include bikes, assorted gear and parts, plus nutrition and camaraderie. Knobbies & Slicks marketing specialist Javier Herrera says every bike comes with a custom fit from knowledgeable staffers, whether the customer is spending $400 or $4,000. “If you’re not comfortable on your bike, you’re not going to ride it, so fit is everything,” Herrera says. Almost every day of the week, the shop hosts group rides, and Herrera says…

Buddy the Dog

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2014 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2014

If I didn’t know better I would think it is October. I started the ride at 9:57 under an overcast sky, 75 degrees and 82% humidity. I automatically selected a short sleeve jersey but when I looped back close to home I almost stopped to change into a long sleeve jersey. I didn’t though thinking that I would warm up as the ride progressed and the temperature would do likewise. After about 6 or 7 miles and zipping my jersey all the way up I started to feel warm. By the time I got to the Huffman Chevron I was sweating from all of the work. I used a bunch of paper towels to dry up some of the sweat. While I was at the Chevron another biker rolled in. We have talked several times before at the station. Our paths don’t cross often since he rides his Litespeed in the evenings and I ride in the morning. He was on his way back home after riding to Dayton. We chatted for a few minutes and then he said he needed to leave because his wife was expecting him to take her out to lunch. I finished my snack and drink before leaving. While I was wrapping up I was visited by Buddy the dog. He escaped from a van parked at the Chevron. One of the children in the van came to return him to the van while her mother talked to another lady.

Riding to Huffman I took the extended route to add a couple of miles by going to Atascocita Road and Aerobic Drive before going through Walden and across Lake Houston. I biked 34.68 miles averaging 15.6 mph. For some reason my legs felt draggy today when I was pedaling in my usual 34 x 12 gears. Riding west over Lake Houston took extra effort and the light west wind tried to hold me back. Turning north didn’t help too much. It was an effort to ride at more than 17 mph. Maybe the heavy air was part of the reason.

Even though I left late for Saturday I managed to see 2 bikers on Fairlake Drive, the one at the Chevron, two more on Atascocita Shore Drive and the last one followed for awhile on Kings River and W. Lake Houston Parkway until I turned into Kingwood Greens Village. I arrived back home at 12:50. The temperature was 79 and the humidity was 76%. I was still thinking it was October. It may not warm up to normal until Monday or Tuesday. The big storm Thursday night brought this coolness.

Where I stand:

  • 187.91 miles this week (1 day to go)
  • 71.22 miles for August (774 miles to go to hit my goal for August)
  • 4283 miles for the year (2017 miles to reach my goal for the year)
