About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ride Time Information

Women on Wheels Central Texas

Roll out time : 7:07 AM  or whenever it gets light out (yes it’s early… but you will be glad you got up)
Please come prepared! That means tires pumped up, your helmet snapped on,  bottles filled, and on your bike ready to roll out!
Starting Place:  The intersection of FM 439 and Sparta Road for an out-and-back total of 27-30 miles with smooth road, rolling hills, and minimal (and usually polite) traffic. Ride the entire distance or, if you are a beginner, go whatever distance you are comfortable with and then turn around and go back to the start. You will find that you can ride farther and have more fun when you have someone else riding with you, so we try to…

The Dirt Road From Hell

by Bill Cullines        Team San Angelo

If you’re looking for a close-to-town place to run, walk, or ride your mountain bike while enjoying nature and being away from traffic, the dirt road that connects from Middle Concho Park to the paved Twin Buttes Reservoir access road near Highway 67 might be just the ticket.
In fact, it’s my go-to location in San Angelo for fitness activities and also where I send new people who ask where to go for workouts.
You can hike the road, run it, or ride your mountain bike while enjoying the desert scenery and taking side trips on the assorted 4WD roads and trails that connect to…

S.A. park police officer’s body found along biking trail, police say

www.kens5.com (Video)

SAN ANTONIO — A person who set out for an afternoon walk Saturday ended up with more adrenaline pumping than they probably had hoped for after finding a man’s body in east San Antonio.
A dispatcher for the San Antonio Fire Department confirmed that a caller reported finding a “badly-beaten body” near the Salado Creek hike and bike trails. The exact location was later determined to be Jack White Trailhead, an area near a park police office building.
According to SAFD, it was obvious that the man was dead because the body had suffered extensive trauma; however, the man was not “beaten” as was initially reported by…

Students on cross-country bike ride stop in Lubbock

www.myfoxlubbock.com        Video

Dozens of college students are making a trek many of us could not imagine. They are riding four thousand miles across the US to help fight cancer.
The 4K for Cancer ride started on June 1st in Baltimore and stopped in Lubbock today. As part of the journey, each rider has raised more than $4,500 dollars for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. It has been quite the journey for these cancer warriors.
“Every single day we have a dedication circle in the morning. So we write on the back of our leg who we want to ride for that day. So a lot of people write friends, family, or if a rider has someone…

Driver sought after cyclist left for dead on Houston streets

By Heather Alexander         www.chron.com

A reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of a driver who hit a cyclist and left him for dead on Houston’s streets last month, Houston Crime stoppers said Thursday.
Martin Robb, 34, was riding his bike equipped with three bright lights and reflectors, on Richmond between McDuffie and Shepherd at about 10 p.m. on June 5.
CCTV footage shows a car drive past him at close range, the bike careens into the curb leaving Robb unconscious as the car disappears into the distance.  Shortly after passersby can be seen stopping to help.
Houston police and Houston Crime Stoppers are asking for help in the incident which they say was a…

97% Humidity But Not Raining

Texbiker.net Posted on July 10, 2014 by Rick AnkrumJuly 10, 2014

I got an early start leaving home at 8:33. The humidity was a strong 97% I and suffered from it all the way to Huffman and back. In Huffman the stop at the Chevron station consisted of soaking up sweat. I was on a shorter time line today so I didn’t want to speed too long at the Chevron station. After drying off some the ride back home was a little better. At least my glasses didn’t get a streak of sweat down them like they did getting to Huffman. My gloves were so wet I wrung them out and put them in paper towels to dry them out some. Sitting on the concrete left a big wet spot. I used about 20 paper towels to try to stem the perspiration before resuming the ride.

Four other riders were out braving the humidity. Two were on Fairlake Drive, one on FM1960 over Lake Houston and the last on Atascocita Shores Drive.

The temperature at the beginning was 79 and 88 when I got home at 11:06. The humidity was 88% at the end. I walked from the garage to our master bathroom and hear a clap of thunder. A couple of minutes later it began raining. I got home just in the nick of time but I could get much wetter so the rain wouldn’t made much difference except for the dirt.

The metrics below recap the ride. Biked 31.75 miles.
