About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

10 Women Bikers

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 18, 2016

I took the enhanced route to Huffman today going a longer way through Atascocita and Walden before going to Huffman. By the time I reached the Old Atascocita Road and FM2100 intersection I was just short of 21 miles. This 2 to 3 miles more than the shorter route. When I came to the Atascocita shores Drive and FM1960 intersection there were 6 or 7 women bikers stopped beside the Chevron station. One woman was running to the station. As I rode east on the FM1960 causeway 4 other women were going west, probably part of the group I saw earlier. I think is unusual for a morning on a week day.

This enhanced routed came to 34.21 miles and I averaged 15.5 mph.

As usual I stopped at the Huffman Chevron. Today was different. They were not selling gasoline because a crew was there replacing all of the hoses, nozzles and checking the pumps. It was quieter than normal with not any people stopping.

Weather continued to be pleasant if hot. The light wind continued from the SSW. 82 degrees and 80% humidity at the 9:36 AM start changing to 89 degrees and 59% humidity when I finished at 12:31PM. Sweat was abundant while I rode and flowed freely at the Chevron station. The light breeze dried me off while I stopped for a snack and drink there.

This is a good start for July. Deciding on the goal for July I looked at July 2012 when I biked 622 miles and July 2013 with 925 miles. I then looked at July 2011 and saw 601 miles. The average of these is 716 miles so that will be my goal.

When I got home I checked the rear tire for anything sticking in to it but didn’t see anything; I prefer this. If I can remember I will do this after each ride. I probably should check the front tire too.

Mileage:

  • 83.48 miles this week
  • 34.21 miles for July (682 miles to reach July’s goal)
  • 3409 miles year to date

Saturday July 5th [Avery Ranch] and Sunday July 6th [Babes on Bikes] Rides!

Steiner Ranch Cycling Group

Saturday we did the Scenic route and it was a hard ride because of wind.  There was only 10 riders probably because of the rain.  We had 3 flats on the way downtown.  No other incidents reported other than it was a challenging ride.  We will be doing the Avery Ranch Loop this upcoming weekend because the 620 towards Lakeway is being worked on.  I think you all should stay off that portion of the 620 until construction is completed.  So no Damn Loop or Cozy Cove for a few weeks.
Sunday was the “Babes on Bikes” and “Sunday Social” ride lead by Cheryl Campbell.  They also had 10 riders on Sunday.  This is a great recover ride or if you are Babe and want to get out on…

A Long Ride to Wrap Up June

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

For the last ride of June I wanted to go on a longer than usual ride. I picked the Splendora – FM2090 – FM1314 route. The last time I rode this route was April 19th of this year. The distance today was 49.26 miles averaging 16.1 mph. The weather conditions have improved from last week with the rain probability dropping to zero and the humidity let up some to: 93 degrees at the end, 42% humidity, partly cloudy sky and wind from the SW at 9 mph. When the wind comes from the southwest the weather tends to dry out and heat up.

I saw one other biker today. I was riding west on FM2090 and he was going east. We passed about 5 miles west of US59 at Splendora. He was tucked down on aero bars. I waved but got no response from him.

The ride went at a good pace until I turned onto Old Houston road where the wind became a headwind. My legs are still a little tired from my Saturday repair work at home. Exiting Kingwood via Adams St. I rode Loop 494 to Roman Forest where I moved to the US59 service road. I was riding at a good pace and began to be around 19 to 20 mph which is not bad for an old guy. The service road traffic is almost non-existent from Roman Forest to Splendora and FM2090 is not much different. The wide shoulder on FM2090 is smooth and free of debris. The only pinch point is the two bridges just before the FM1485 traffic light.

I turned left at FM1485 and rode to the traffic light at FM1485 and FM3083. Usually I stop at the Valero station there but today I kept riding on Old Houston Road. I had a supply of water in my bottle and I did not want to add time to the ride. I planned on stopping at the Texaco station at FM1314 and Gene Campbell Road which I did. I got some ice and water to carry me to the Stripes station about 5 miles away.

Stopping at the Stripes station I ate some cookies and a trailmix bar with Fruit Punch Gatorade. Sitting in the shade was pleasant as the wind blew and my sweat dried up. From there it was through Briar Tree, Oakhurst and Kingwood Place before riding on the south US59 service road to Kingwood Drive. The wind was slowing me down now and my pedaling effort was high. Biking through Kingwood is slow with intersections and stop signs. I arrived home at 1:13.

Some statistics for the month of June:

  • biked 27 of 30 days
  • 971.12 miles (last month I biked over 900 miles was July 2013: 925 miles)
  • 62 hours and 43 minutes riding time, 84 hours and 19 minutes total time
  • 8289 ft. elevation gain (hard to get much around flat Houston)
  • 15.5 mph average speed
  • average ride distance was 35.96 miles
  • shortest ride: 27.53 miles (6/29), longest ride: 51.81 miles (6/7)
  • 86 miles over my goal of 885 miles

Cedar Hill State Park Mountain Biking Trails

Blaze Shack

Cedar Hill State Park is a really fun trail. This trail is not very technical or difficult, but it is a lot of fun. The climbs are relatively short compared to the climbs at something like Big Cedar. And the downhill sections are relatively shorter as well. However, they have done a good job creating good flow through the hills. Not a whole lot…

Just Didn’t Have It

Bike Noob

Saturday, I had a good neighborhood ride after coming back from a week’s layoff. A trip to the local bike shop took care of my spoke problem, and the bike is rolling smoothly again. I even set a new PR on a Strava segment. In short, I was looking forward to our Sunday club ride.
I had put out a call on our club’s Yahoo board for B riders to come on out. We haven’t been getting any B’s lately — just me and Maggie — and we were looking for company. So I was pleased to see Brian when I got to Starbucks. Brian has been working in Mexico for the last six months — he does something managerial with oil rigs — so he hasn’t been able to ride with us. We did get a new B rider, Joe, who had ridden with us two weeks ago and realized that to keep up, he needed to get clipless pedals and shoes with cleats. But the rest of the group of eight were A riders, who didn’t want to…

4 Mistakes Every New Cyclist Should Avoid

Bike Geek

When you come back to cycling, as an adult, it can be a wonderful reunion.  All too often, however, this reunion is short-lived.  Let’s take a look at four critical mistakes every new cyclist should avoid.
Mistake 1 : Buying a cheap bicycle at a department store
You might save a ton of money by purchasing your new bicycle at the local department store, but the old saying “you get what you pay for” most certainly applies when it comes to bicycles.  Inexpensive bicycles are often heavy and have low-end components that are more prone to having issues.  This could mean your first few bike rides become an exercise in frustration as you struggle up hills and deal with…
