About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Have A Seat, Please

Texbiker.net Posted on June 29, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 18, 2016

Second day in a row not riding in the rain. The humidity was high enough to make it seem like I was riding in the rain though. When I finished the ride at 1:42 it was 92 degrees with 50% humidity.

My legs were tired today. Yesterday after my ride I worked on the toilet in our half bath for 4 hours. Bending, lifting and odd positions made me one tired person when I gave up on removing the 30 year seat from the bowl. The new seat promises easy install and removal but the old seat did not have this feature. I think the only way the old seat will let loose is to drill out the plastic seat hinge bolts. This will be a Monday project after I ride.

Back to today’s ride to Huffman. With the tired legs I did a rare thing and took an Advil when I ate breakfast hoping it would let the hurting muscles feel better by the time I got home from church and Sunday school. I think it did a pretty good job letting me pedal into the 17 mph gusts with a resemblance of power. I didn’t want to take time to ride the full route to Huffman so I used the abbreviated route staying on FM1960 from Atascocita to Huffman and back. I biked 27.53 miles and despite the tired muscles averaged 15.3 mph.

The sky was almost all clouds and I expected some clouds to come together to rain but nothing happened; no compliant from me. The next several days the rain probability is 20% or less.

I saw several other bicyclists along the route, mostly in Kingwood. On the way to church I saw Ronnie, one of the group I rode with Saturday a week ago.

When I got home and put the Stradalli in the garage for some reason I pinched the rear tire, it was softer than it should’ve been. I went inside to cool down, clean up and eat lunch. My wife brought Hartz chicken after church so no need for us to cook. After a shower and eating I went to the garage to check the rear tire. It was flat so I brought it and the tools inside to take a look. It didn’t take long to find a piece of wire sticking out of the tire but it wasn’t the cause. It didn’t make to the inside of the tire forming a “U” and coming back out. I looked for another cause but couldn’t find anything so I removed the tube, aired it up and felt for escaping air. Almost opposite the valve stem a gush of air was coming out and I put a screw it in to mark the spot. I inspected the inside of the tire in the area where the hole lined up. A tiny piece of wire stuck out of the inside of the tire. I tried to pull it out put I couldn’t get a hold of it. Finally I got a nail and pushed from the outside and the wire disappeared. Patching the tube I put in back in the tire. This is the first patch on this tube since I switched tires several months a go. I will check my patch job in a couple of hours. Don’t want any problems for tomorrow’s ride.

June’s Mileage Goal Accomplished

Texbiker.net Posted on June 28, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2016

I rode to the north today and as I passed the entrance into Oakhurst on the US59 south service route I reached my 885 mile goal for June. The wind was battling me as I pedaled into it and when I got home I found out why it seemed so hard: 20 mph from the south with 25 mph gusts. The New Caney – Gene Campbell Rd. route was 36.03 miles long today and the average speed was 15.6 mph. The last 11 miles was fighting the wind and slowed me down whenever I rode into it.

The ride started at 9:21 with a mostly cloudy sky, 82 degrees and 77% humidity. I delayed the ride about 10 minutes to give some rain clouds over Porter to move out. I figured by the time I got there the roads would have time to dry. When I did get there the roads were so dry I doubt that it even rained there.

This is a picture of the new asphalt on Adams Street looking to the west (Click on the image to enlarge it). I am not sure if they will put a center stripe on. The dog that has chased me a couple of times has not been around since the new asphalt went down. He may be on vacation.

6-28-2014 Adams St

From Adams Street I went to the north US59 service road to get to Porter. In Porter FM1314 east got me to Loop 494 for the ride to New Caney. In New Caney FM1485 west brought me to Gene Campbell Road. So far no rain today at this point. Gene Campbell connects with FM1314 and from there I rode to the Stripes station at Valley Ranch Parkway. I had rode about 25.5 miles at this point so I took a break to eat some Pop-Tarts and drink some Gatorade. When I came out of Stripes to sit down there was a young man standing beside the soft drink display. We chatted about biking and his walking long distances. I sat down and he asked numerous people if they could give him a ride to the west on FM1314. Many people turned him down but finally a man said he could ride with him. I was watching the sky while chatting with him and eating. It was getting dark to the east but moving to the north and not my direction. Finishing up I took off through Briar Tree and Auburn Trail to the south US59 service road. The wind was pretty strong and I had to pedal hard all the way to Kingwood Drive and the u-turn to the north service road.

So far I was soaked from perspiration but as I entered Kings Manor a very light rain started while I rode in the sun. It didn’t take too long to ride out of the rain as I finished the ride. Not long after I got home it started raining. This was the first day I biked on dry roads all the way or didn’t get rained on. No need to wash the Stradalli today, a wipe down was all that I needed to do. At home at 12:25 it was 89 degrees and 63% humidity before the light rain started. I saw the wind was from the south at 20 mph with gusts to 25 mph, the reason I had difficulty riding from the Stripes station to home.

Mileage report:

  • 182.74 miles for the week
  • 894.32 miles for the month (exceeded my goal by 6 miles)
  • 3298 miles year to date

Bicyclist shares story about last moments with doomed rider at Flower Mound park

www.crosstimbersgazette.com

The last person to see Wesley Hixson alive is speaking out. David Bennett posted on Facebook about his encounter with Hixson as the pair were mountain biking with a group of cyclists on the trails at Murrell Park in Flower Mound last weekend.
Hixson, 30, of Roanoke, left the other riders and went missing on Saturday afternoon. His body was found in a muddy ravine northeast of Twin Coves Marina on Monday afternoon. The investigation on his cause of death is ongoing.
Here is Bennett’s story:
“When Wes met up with us, he had mentioned that he had stayed out too late the night before and was a much better rider than what he was showing while on the trail. However, he still was riding fast and hard just as we all were. This was my first time riding with Wes and also my first time riding at Northshore. I didn’t know these trails so I let Wes lead. It wasn’t long before he and I got separated from the other 3 in our…
