About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Coming Soon: Jack and Adam’s Bicycles

www.visitfredericksburgtx.com

Josh Allen is joining the growing number of young up-and-comers bringing new ideas and businesses to Fredericksburg. Born and raised in Sweetwater, Josh spent most weekends of his youth at his family’s ranch in rural Gillespie County- Doss, Texas. His love for the Texas Hill Country and his love for cycling brought him back to Fredericksburg just a few months ago as he began the process of opening his own bike shop, Jack and Adam’s Bicycles.
After graduating from high school, Josh followed the road to the University of Texas. During college Josh was employed at Austin cycling shop, Jack and Adam’s, where he was able to expand on his love of the outdoors, cycling and triathlons. After graduating with a degree in Economics, Josh spent a few years as a banker, only to be drawn back to Fredericksburg by “good cycling and good people.”
Josh’s goal is to establish Jack and Adam’s Bicycles as more than just a “bike shop” but more of a community hub- somewhere you meet up…

Dallas women on 3,000 mile bike ride to raise ovarian cancer awareness

By STEPHANIE EMBREE, Staff Writer        www.dallasnews.com

They met only four months ago, but this summer two Dallas women are spending every waking hour together as they bike 3,000 miles to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
Amber Hill, 25, and Jessica Terry, 23, quit their jobs and left their homes to bike the East Coast Greenway, a path that runs from the top of Maine to Key West, Fla. They recently reached Washington, D.C.
“A lot of people joked that we may not be friends after this,” says Amber, “but we have honest conversations.”
They use the same kind of honesty when explaining why they set off on this adventure in the first place.
Amber was 18 when her mother, Joy Hill, was taken to the…

Amtrak to welcome bicycling passengers by end of the year

Amtrak trains run across Texas. This could increase the bicycles traveling on them.

By Jon Schmitz / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Amtrak said it will begin to introduce new baggage cars equipped with bicycle racks on all of its long-distance trains, including the Capitol Limited serving Pittsburgh, by the end of the year.
“This is a service and amenity that we want to make sure we can offer,” Amtrak spokesman Craig Schulz said Tuesday.
“It’?s great to have Amtrak understanding how important the bike tourism industry is,” said Linda Boxx, board member and former president of the Allegheny Trail Alliance, who has worked for years to persuade Amtrak to provide better accommodations for bikes.
The railroad has ordered 55 new baggage cars with bike racks, and the cars will be placed on all 15 long-distance routes, including the Capitol Limited, which operates between Chicago and…

Have You Seen The Ghost Bikes In Katy?

coveringkaty.com

White bicycles, completely white—tires, frame, seat and handlebar can be seen chained to a tree, maybe a sign post along the streets in Katy and Houston. The bicycles are part of an international effort, Ghost Bikes, in which Houston and Katy are part of. The bikes recognize the victims of fatal bicycle accidents.
One of the Ghost Bikes in Katy is in memory of Larry Lott, killed March 30, 2009 after being struck by a car at the intersection of South Fry and Shillington. Counting fatality markers on the map found at shows over 50 bikers have lost their lives on Houston streets, including Katy.
Richard Tomlinson, who lives in Silsbee, is a member of the Houston cycling community and a big part of the…

Ladies Rock Le Driveway

Bicycle Austin

If there are any ladies out there that are curious about trying out criterium racing, there is a wonderful opportunity to do so NEXT week, Thursday, July 3rd, at the Driveway.  The Driveway is located at 8400 Delwau Ln, Austin, TX 78725.
You can access it by using the Southern Walnut Creek Trail. The great thing about this event is that ladies can try out the course for free from 4-5.  So, if you ever wanted to just try riding on a race course, this is a great opportunity to do so (no strings attached and very low risk). They are also offering discounted rates for female racers if you’d like to give racing a try.  The beginner race starts at 5pm.  You can learn more here: <<www.drivewayseries.com/>>
Below is the blurb about the event.
This year the ladies have been showing up in force to race the Driveway and we want to take this opportunity to recognize the sport of women’s cycling and celebrate what Holland Racing has done to…

Maybe I Should Sing In The Rain

Texbiker.net Posted on June 24, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2016

Another day biking in the rain. Again it caught me or rather I caught it from Huffman to home. Before leaving home at 9:43 I checked the weather radar and there wasn’t one spot of rain showing. By the time I arrive at the Huffman Chevron around 21.5 miles into the ride dark clouds had gathered. I went inside the Chevron station to get a drink after going through 8  paper towels trying soak up all of the sweat I had generated up to that point. While I was inside the light rain moved in. The timing was better today since I was already where I could stay out of the rain.

It didn’t last long and by the time I finished a Kashi bar, cookies and the drink the rain was gone and the roads were drying out. I looked at the weather radar on my phone and there was a big patch right where I was heading but I thought it might be gone by the time I got there. I pulled out of the Chevron station going west on FM1960. The clouds ahead didn’t look too threatening and the shoulder was drying out except for one spot where the water was out into the main right lane. I swung wide left to get around with no traffic coming.

Continuing on to Pinehurst Trail where I would turn right I started to feel a few light drops as I made the right hand turn. From there to Kings River Drive I rode in a light rain. It felt good and was less moisture than the perspiration I was creating so I kept riding. On Kings River Drive the rain stopped but the streets were wet from there to the last mile from home. I got home at 12:45 and washed the Stradalli. Not long after I was inside I started to hear thunder but no rain fell.

Earlier in the ride while I was going east over Lake Houston a group of bicyclists were headed the other direction. I think they were in a hurry to beat the rain. I waved but no returned it. I saw several riders on the way out of Kingwood and they all waved back.

I rode a longer “Atascocita – Walden – Huffman” route today to get an extra mile in my quest to reach 885 miles for June. This longer route was 33.51 miles long and I averaged 15.4 mph. With the damp weather I don’t know if I will be able to ride each day left in June.

Wednesday weather: 89 degrees and a 60% chance of rain.

Mileage statistics:

  • 81.93 miles this week
  • 793.51 miles for June (92 miles left to reach my goal)
  • 3197 miles year to date

Transportation trends, challenges emerge at Dallas conferences

By BRANDON FORMBY, Transportation Writer        www.dallasnews.com

North Texas is a car-loving region that’s also home to the nation’s longest light-rail network. And in the past week, Dallas has served as the epicenter for national discussions about how transportation solutions are devised and implemented.
A cadre of professors, architects, politicians and technology executives talked about how transportation works — or doesn’t — in cities during last week’s New Cities Summit and the ongoing U.S. Conference of Mayors.
And even though the country predominantly moves by automobile, many of the conversations focused on public transit and biking.
“The fact that we’ve given our soul to the car is…

Tour of Austin Cancelled

by Nicole Ortega        texasbikeracing.com

The 6th year of The Tour of Austin (TOA) has been recently and reluctantly cancelled. With plans to make this year grander by adding more vendors and having two days at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), things sounded promising during the beginning stages of organization. Having last year’s TOA pan out as a huge success, COTA was excited to host it once again. Although TOA has always struggled to attain sponsors, Andrew and Holly Willis were ready take this project on once again. They drew up an agreement and sent it out to COTA in May of 2013, where it went over well. Holly and Andrew were hopeful TOA had finally found a home after years of bouncing from venue to venue and losing money for the first three years.
They started having meetings to discuss details with COTA, but the holidays came around and progression started to slow down. An agreement had not been finalized just yet, and everyone was still…
