Missing mountain biker near Grapevine Lake

Flower Mound police are searching for a mountain biker who was somehow injured and then became separated from his friends in the woods.
The search started at Murrell Park near Grapevine Lake.
His friends told police they hadn’t seen him since about 10:00 a.m.
Search teams tried using a helicopter but thick trees obstructed their view. Crews will continue a ground search for the man.

That squeak turned out to be a worn chain. I’ll get a new one this week. In the meantime, I lubed it up and headed out to meet my biking buddy Maggie for a Sunday ride.
I didn’t want to go far because of the chain. She had done a longish ride the day before, and wasn’t up for a long one, either. We set off for Buda, about 15 miles away. When we ride there with the A’s, we often get there in record time. This week, we lazed our way along.
On the outskirts of the small town, we took a bio break at the Walgreen’s. That’s a favorite stopping point for both of us, because the water fountain by the bathrooms always runs cold.

Wheelchair Sports in Huffman

Cloudy skies threatened to deliver the forecasted rain but not while I biked to Huffman and back. I started earlier than usual for Sunday leaving home at 10:34. Temperature hung at 84 degrees with 61% humidity. It didn’t take too long after I started for the perspiration started to flow. The humidity reduced the evaporation potential and my jersey and bandana tries to absorb as much as they could but the drops fell. As I returned home at 12:57 I thought I would run into the rain but none came down until I was walking from the garage to the back door. I could hear some light rain hitting the patio cover fabric. It didn’t last long nor get anything wet. It was 87 degrees and 45% humidity. A light breeze was the best it could muster.

When I stopped at FM2100 and FM1960 there were some people raising funds for wheelchair sports. One man in a wheelchair told me it was hot and I agreed. He was under a tent trying to stay cool. I told him moving made the air go by and cool me down some. I remarked that was the incentive to keep riding. He laughed and said he liked a gym with A/C.

A couple of other bicyclists were out going the opposite direction I was.

The goal for today was go far enough to push the weekly miles over 200. I rode 28.62 miles today on an out and back route to Huffman. Nothing fancy for the route. Average speed was 15.4 mph.

Tomorrow the forecast calls for 94 degrees, partly cloudy sky and almost no chance of rain. I plan on a 45 to 50 mile ride. Later in the week the rain could pose a problem.

I rode the Tour de Cure today in DFW. It was a good day for a bike ride. At one of the rest stops, I was talking to a volunteer and she said she was happy to see so many older folks riding. I asked her what her definition of older was, she said over 30. I looked around and there were very few under 30 or even under 40 there. She probably thought it was a miracle I made it.

An often missed and lower traffic trail on the West side of the park, this is the most difficult trail in the park. The Triangle features continuously rolling terrain with fast turns.

Houston Cycling Club Group of 3 Around Lake Houston

Today’s ride was a Houston Cycling Club group of 3, including myself. We met at Kingwood Park High School at 8:45 to set out around the north of Lake Houston. The group was Ronnie, Gilbert and myself. After pre-riding the route last Saturday I made a change to go through Roman Forest and avoid most of FM1485 because the should er is not wide enough. Riding out of Kingwood through Kings Manor we took Loop 494 to Roman Forest Blvd. Going through Roman Forest we moved on to Casey Ridge and back to FM1485. A quick stop at the convenience store for ice and water we took off on FM1485 east over the East San Jancinto River and back into Harris County. At that point the shoulder widened until we got to Huffman-Cleveland Road where the shoulder vanished.

We waited a couple of minutes at the intersection to allow some traffic to pass before setting off for 2 miles of no shoulder until we could turn on Blue Lake Drive and then ride through the Commons of Lake Houston.

The temperature was increasing and my perspiration was flowing heavily. Riding in shade was a blessing and the wind moving through my jersey produced a cooling effect. When I left home at 8:34 it was 77 degrees with 71% humidity. When I reached Kingwood Park High School I was standing there talking to Ronnie while Gilbert got his bike ready. My glasses fogged up from the humidity and my body heat. Getting back home at 12:12 it was 90 degrees and 41% humidity. The lower humidity helped to evaporate the sweat as long as I was moving. The partly cloudy sky allowed the sun shine down on us and the light breeze meant no real headwinds.

Today is the first day of summer. It should get hotter. Before I retired the day summer arrived was a letdown because this meant the daylight would get shorter and I would have to cut back biking in the evening after I got home from work. No more of that!!!

Exiting the Commons of Lake Houston we rode to Huffman and a stop at the Huffman Chevron. We took a break to refill water bottles, drink some energy drinks and eat a snack. I was pouring sweat and went through two piles of paper towels trying to dry off some. After 15 minutes or so it was back on the bikes for the final 11 or so miles.

The roads on this route vary from smooth asphalt to crumbling and rough. Roman Forest has nice smooth roads thanks to the new construction going on there. Casey Ridge has mostly rough roads. Commons of Lake Houston is about all concrete and smooth except for a short stretch as we exited on Vista Del Lago which was asphalt and in good condition. FM2100 has fresh asphalt and FM1960 is concrete all the way from Huffman to just before Atascocita Shores Dr.

I biked 44.9 miles averaging 16.0 mph. Thanks to the group and light wind I was able to keep a good pace. Since I was leading because I knew the route I wanted to set a good pace and my body cooperated. It was great biking with some other bikers.

The noisy chain went away thanks to No. 5 Chain-L lubrication I applied yesterday.

Tomorrow the weather forecast says 88 degrees, chance of afternoon thundershowers. I plan on riding after church in the morning so I might beat the rain.
