About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wet Roads and I Get Muddy

Texbiker.net Posted on June 16, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2016

I suspected Montgomery County Precinct 4 had not laid any asphalt on Adams Street. Because of this I exited Kingwood via Kings Manor to ride north on my New Caney – Gene Campbell Rd. route. Exiting Kings Manor I rode north on Loop 494 to verify my suspicions. I found that the asphalt is not down and it looks like they are adding a street or two to the project. I expect it will be another week before any change in the roads.

After checking on the resurfacing I rode on E. Knox to the US59 north bound service road and onto Porter. The closer I got to Porter I started to see the concrete wet near the curb. When I turned onto F1314 to go east to Loop 494 the road was wet but no rain was falling. I estimate the rain was 15 minutes in front of me. Once I was on Loop 494 the road was wet all the way to Eagle Drive by New Caney High School. I took Eagle Drive back to the US59 service road and as I approached the service road it started to rain big drops but not too many of them. I got on the service road and headed to New Caney thinking if the rain increased there were a couple of places I could stop. The rain didn’t increase until I passed those places and stayed with me until I was about 1/2 a mile from FM1485 and some places to get out of the rain. One spot on the service road was really muddy from the Grand Parkway construction. As I went by I could see many concrete trucks and a concrete batch plant. Of course it stopped when I was near those places. I took the u-turn under US59 at FM1485 to get to the Chevron station. The rain started back again and I waited there about 10 or 15 minutes. When it stopped I went out to FM1485 and rode to Gene Campbell Road. FM1485 was wet and so was Gene Campbell Road for the first mile or so. Then it dried out and the rain left all the way home. Not too long after I turned onto Gene Campbell Road a black pickup/SUV came toward me going the opposite direction. A bozo in the passenger seat put his arm out of the truck and flung something my direction but his timing and aim were not so good missing me.

Reaching the Stripes station on FM1314 I took a break to dry out some, eat some and drink. Also I was remembering the last time I rode through Briar Tree I had a dog sprint. I wondered if the dog would be out today. Finishing the break I wiped down my bike some and got on Old Sorters Road to see if the dog would be in place. Entering Briar Tree I turn to the left. The first mobile home on the left is the usual place I see the dog but he is not there today. This spot is difficult because I come around the corner sometimes after stopping for traffic and the distance is not long enough to get up to speed. The second place is further along the road where I can go faster but today I saw no dog. There was a large truck and a car passing so this might had played a part.

Weather was all over the place. Mostly cloudy at home when I started at 11:10, 87 degrees, 54% humidity and gusty wind. Raining in New Caney. Returning home at 2:34 the sky was still mostly cloud, 92 degrees  and 41% humidity. The wind picked up: SSE 17 mph gusts to 25 mph.

The Stradalli got the first brush wash to remove all of the grit and grime. It is now shinny again. My shoes were coated, my jersey has mud up the back and my socks were brown around the top.

Tomorrow the weather is forecast to be partly cloudy and 92. A good day to bike. I am watching live Tour de Suisse on BeInSport on Dish at 8:300 AM.

Confessions of a Mediocre Masters Racer at Tulsa Tough

by Robert Wray        texasbikeracing.com

Five days later, my legs and kidneys have recovered, and I’ve had a chance to reflect on my weekend at Tulsa Tough. Not only was it my first time at Tulsa Tough, it was my first time stepping foot into Oklahoma.
Like Cat 6 rookies, an Austinbikes Bombers teammate and I rolled out of town at 3 PM on Friday afternoon, only to get stuck in horrendous traffic and construction between Austin and Dallas. Nine hours later, we rolled into Tulsa – just after midnight. We missed the Friday night “Blue Dome” crit. Stories were already circulating around the hotel bar about a…

US Flags Galore

Texbiker.net Posted on June 14, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2016

I put out our US flag early this morning to celebrate Flag Day. It didn’t take too long on today’s bike ride to see that many other people did the same thing. In the first mile there were probably 20 or more flags. On some streets every other house had a flag at the curb. With the gentle breeze many of them fluttered. I estimate I saw over 100 US flags during the ride today.

The last time I biked the route I rode today was July 13, 2013. I didn’t realize that until I was checking last night. This route is labeled New Caney – FM1485 – Huffman. The distance totaled 42.46 miles and I averaged 15.6 mph. This is the first time I rode on the recently resurfaced FM1485. The surface was smooth but the shoulder seems to be narrower than before. One thing added are the bumps under the white line marking the side of the lane. I don’t know how they put them down and if you don’t look closely you may miss seeing them. As part of the construction new gravel was added to the right edge of the asphalt and as a result at many corners the gravel has kicked up on the road. Most of the time I could ride through it without getting into the main lane but sometimes I swerved into the main lane to get around large amounts of rock. Fortunately traffic was spread out enough that it wasn’t a problem. The resurface was from the railroad tracks at Loop 494 all the way to the East Fork of the San Jacinto River. This was about 5 miles.

Once I crossed over the San Jacinto River bridge the shoulder widened probably because this is in Harris County. The road from the river to the Plum Grove Road also had been resurfaced but before FM1485. FM1485 becomes FM2100 at Plum Grove Rd. and looses the shoulder. For the first 1/4 mile there is a sharp drop off and then the drop off ends but still no shoulder for about 2 miles until Blue Lake Drive where I turned to start riding through the Commons of Lake Houston. This gets me off FM2100 and still ride toward Huffman. After winding through several streets I came out to Huffman-Cleveland Road. In the past I turned right onto Huffman-Cleveland to go to Huffman but today my water bottle was empty so I turned left and went to the Valero station on FM2100 across from where the Huffman-Cleveland Rd. joined FM2100. As I rode across FM2100 I saw the recent resurfacing work and the grooves cut into the shoulder. I expected the ride from the Valero station to Huffman would be smooth. After getting ice and water I headed to Huffman on FM2100. It didn’t take long to realize the resurface work caused the space to ride on the shoulder to be much narrower than before. The foot wide grooves were not as close to the white line as they should be by about 4 inches. This moved me to the right to a space not 2 feet wide with patches of rock and loose asphalt closing that down in places. This moved me well right of the traffic but I had to pay close attention to avoid the debris. This lasted until the Huffman-Cleveland Rd rejoined FM2100 at the traffic light. The shoulder increased to 6 feet or more from there to Huffman.

I stopped at the Huffman Chevron for Powerade and Kashi snacks and to rest. This was at almost 30 miles into the ride. Sitting under the canopy with the light breeze blowing felt great and the perspiration didn’t take too long to evaporate. Home was about 12 miles away since I was going past Kingwood High School rather than the route I usually take behind HEB. While I was at the Chevron station a train came through and I counted the cars the one engine was pulling: 48, mostly tank cars.

Leaving home at 10:37 the weather was mostly cloudy sky, 83 degrees, 64% humidity and a light breeze. I returned home at 2:00 under the same mostly cloudy sky, 91 degrees and 40% humidity. Maybe the lower humidity is why I did not seem to perspire as much today.

Mileage statistics:

  • 213.11 miles this week (Monday through Saturday)
  • 496.66 miles for June (388 miles left to reach my goal for June)
  • 2900 miles year to date
  • Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS

[wppa type=”slide” album=”344″ size=”auto”][/wppa]

Tomorrow’s weather looks like a repeat of today except for some late afternoon rain possible. I may take the day off since it is Father’s Day and I have biked 16 days in a row.
