About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dallas bike helmet rules now apply only to cyclists under age 18

By Tom Benning        cityhallblog.dallasnews.com

Cyclists who are 18 years or older no longer have to wear a helmet in Dallas.
The City Council on Wednesday partially repealed its bicycle helmet ordinance, which required all cyclists to wear one. Officials have debated for weeks whether to loosen the requirements as a way to encourage more cycling and launch a bike sharing program.
Council members disagreed once again over how far the city should go in rolling back the rules.
Some, such as Philip Kingston, pushed for total repeal. Others, such as Sandy Greyson, suggested…

Blazyk-Zyle Ride – A Tale of Two Roads

Bike Noob

One of the joys I get from biking is looking around at the areas I ride through. I’m sure most of us enjoy that part of riding.
Recently, a friend mentioned that he doesn’t always stop when he reaches a busy two-lane road on one of our routes. Instead, he heads out on the road for just a bit, and turns onto Blazyk Drive – a residential road just out of the city limits. Then, he takes a jaunt a bit farther south, and picks up Zyle Road. Both are dead ends, so they’re short out-and-back legs in longer rides. But they offer a…

Blue Sky, Low Humidity, Fast Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on June 11, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2016

The effects of the “cool” front passing through yesterday morning hung around for today’s ride. When I checked my home weather station at 7:00AM it was 69 degrees and when I left home on the ride at 10:20 it had went up to 82 (61% humidity). The almost clear sky was beautiful. I took this picture while I was at the Star Stop station in Porter at the 29 mile mark. I was resting up and enjoying the cool breeze under the pump canopy.

Blue sky at the Porter Star Stop station

Blue sky at the Porter Star Stop sation

A light breeze helped keep me cool as the temperature increased during the ride. By the time I got home at 1:25 it was 91 degrees with the humidity dropping to 39%. Before the ride I aired up the tires and that seemed to lower the rolling resistance. Over the 38.2 mile ride I was able to average 15.9 mph (GC calculation).

My route selection went north through New Caney, into Roman Forest, Tram Road north to FM2090 then to Splendora. After a brief stop at the Chevron station in Splendora to refill my water bottle I headed to the south bound US59 service road. I stayed on the service road all the way to Kingwood Drive stopping in Porter at the Star Stop station for a break, trailmix bars and Powerade.

Roman Forest Blvd. has a nice smooth asphalt surface. This happened while the new Tavola planned community construction started. As I turned onto Roman Forest Blvd. there is a big water feature being built with a tower at the back. I did not look real close at the sign but there may be a clock in the tower. At this point the steel frame of the tower is exposed with the brick/stone piled around the site.

Mileage statistics:

  • 105.01 miles this week
  • 388.56 miles for June (497 miles left to reach my goal of 885 miles)
  • 2792 miles year to date

Tunnel Vision

By Kat Hunter, ATC Racing        texasbikeracing.com

I think three things make you good at time trialing: 1) Steady, structured training. A lot of it. 2) The right equipment and position. 3) The ability to push yourself when racing alone and ignore the inner survival mechanism that says pain is bad.
This year the state time trial championships, put on by the Northwest Cycling Club (NWCC), were held on June 7 and 8 in Hempstead, a small town about 53 miles west of Houston. The 40K course was a flat out-and-back, with smooth pavement and minimal traffic. As predicted, for both Saturday’s individual and Sunday’s team time trials, there was a headwind to the turnaround and a tailwind for the return. The…

Nationwide study on biking and walking shows El Paso lags far behind peer cities

VeloPaso

El Paso ranked among deadliest city for bicyclists and pedestrians, lowest levels of biking and walking, least amount of bicycle infrastructure
El Paso ranks among the highest in bicycle-pedestrian fatality rates, lowest in bicycling and walking levels, and dead last in bicycle infrastructure per square mile, according to the latest benchmark report on Bicycle and Walking in the United States which collects and analyzes data on the country’s 51 largest cities. (See attached excerpts from report.)
“El Paso’s leading in all the wrong indicators,” said Victor Cordero, vice president of the Velo Paso Bicycle-Pedestrian Coalition. “Behind these numbers we find a mom who can’t bike down the street with her family or let her kids walk to school without feeling like…

Full Moon Ride

San Angelo Bicycle Association

Date(s) – 06/13/2014
8:00 pm – 10:30 pm
Location: Burkett Trailhead
Full Moon Rides are held at San Angelo State Park and start at 8pm at Burkett Trailhead.  Depending on the group, we will go anywhere from 9 miles to 18 miles.
Depending on who shows up is how we dictate how the ride will go.  If there are newbies, then we will keep it to a couple of hours on fairly easy trails.  If it is experienced riders, we will do the same trails as we normally do in daylight and ride the entire park. Usually we are finished by 10:30 to 11pm, but have stayed riding until 1am before.

June 14th [Avery Ranch] and June 15th [Social] Rides!

Steiner Ranch Cycling Group

Saturday was the Jester King Brewery II ride.  We had a really good turn out and a number of clubs turn out for the ride.  The weather was nice and the food and brews were good.
Sunday was the Steiner Ranch social ride and only Thomas showed up.  The warm rain must have scared everyone away except the hard core riders.
The pub crawler ride is tomorrow (Wednesday) evening and it is going to be awesome!  Hopefully it is so fun that we organize another one in the near future so the ones that could not partake get another opportunity.  I’m sure pictures and stories will be plentiful.

Rain Moves Through Leaves Wind

Texbiker.net Posted on June 10, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 25, 2016

Early this morning a line of rain storms moved through the area cleaning out the sky for today. The blue sky is a contrast to the many clouds since Sunday. The wind that pushed the rain through hung around for the ride. I watched the Criterium Dauphine live on NBCSports (my Nexus 7 was perfect for this with the app) this morning inspiring me to get out there and bike. The WNW wind was stiff but since I was going south and east it didn’t cause too much of a problem. The wind was 15 mph with 21 mph gusts when I left home at 10:04 and the temperature was 79, a pleasant break form the 80’s of the last couple of days. By the time I got home at 12:56 the wind was from the W with not much change in speed; 15 mph gusts 20.7 mph. The humidity dropped some today to 40% at the end of the ride. I wore a long sleeve jersey and it didn’t feel too hot.

After leaving the Huffman Chevron to finish the last 11 miles I rode into the wind almost all the way. I slowed down going over Lake Houston on FM1960 without anything blocking the wind. I should’ve change the gear I was using to help. Every once in awhile a line of vehicles would pass going to the west and suck some of the wind away for a few seconds. This helped me to speed up.

There were several other cyclists out in various spots along the 32.79 mile long ride. Even with the wind I managed to average 14.9 mph (based on the Golden Cheetah metrics).

Mileage:

  • 66.81 miles this week
  • 350.36 miles for June (535 miles to go to reach June’s goal of 885)
  • 2754 miles year to date

I said I would use SportTracks for the program of record this month but I am going to change back to Golden Cheetah. GC mileage is closer to Garmin Connect.

Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS for today’s ride data and map.
