Because I am riding the Spindletop Spin tomorrow in Beaumont I didn’t need to ride too far today. I rode to the north to New Caney and then back through Valley Ranch, Briar Tree and Oakhurst. I was surprised as I exited Kingwood through Woodridge Forest. On Adams St. Montgomery County Precinct 4 road crews were preparing the street for re-surfacing. Since this street was recently connected to Woodridge Forest I suspect the traffic has increased going to Loop 494. According to the flagman at the railroad tracks they hope to put asphalt on next week weather permitting. This should be a nice improvement over the old surface which had many patches, dips and bumps.

I biked 30.27 miles averaging 14.7 mph. At the beginning of the ride I went past an elementary school where parents were collecting their children as school ends for the summer. I had to be careful navigating all of the cars and people.

Summer weather is here. It was 81 when I started at 9:49 and 92 when I finished at 12:29. Scattered clouds and a light to calm breeze meant perspiration was flowing heavily. Around the 18 mile point my bandana couldn’t hold it back any longer and a streak went down my glasses. At the Stripes station I spent several minutes sopping up the sweat before going inside to get a drink. Humidity started at 71% and dropped to 47% at the end of the ride.

Adults soon may be able to leave bike helmets at home

The Dallas City Council is poised to scrap a helmet requirement for adult bicyclists.
A majority of council members voiced support Wednesday for retaining the helmet law only for riders younger than 17.
Two council members who are avid cyclists, Lee Kleinman and Philip Kingston, said they’d like to see the helmet rules eliminated altogether.
A formal vote is scheduled for next week.

Man critically injured in downtown bicycle crash

SAN ANTONIO — A man was critically injured early Thursday when he ran a red light on a bicycle and hit an SUV downtown, according to police.
Sebastian Alaniz, 20, was riding northbound on South Main Avenue just after 1:30 a.m. and failed to stop at the red light at East Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard, according to police. Alaniz hit the passenger side of a Ford Expedition, which was driving eastbound on Cesar Chavez, police said.

Henderson cyclist riding to Dallas in memory of 4-year-old niece’s battle with brain cancer

Keith Davis is ready to do his part to end cancer.
The 50-year-old Henderson resident pledged to complete a bike ride from Las Vegas to Dallas in hopes of raising $10,000 and awareness about the disease. He plans to start June 13.
“I’m doing this in honor of my niece Holland (Young),” he said. “I enjoy cycling, so I thought I could turn it into a fundraiser.”
Cancer has touched Davis’ family periodically throughout his life.
“It has definitely made our children, my children, more aware of cancer,” he said. “Everyone is more conscious.”
Davis’ mother died of pancreatic cancer eight years ago.
Last year, his 4-year-old niece died of brain cancer.

Riding through Eagle Springs – Walden – Huffman is a longer version of the usual ride through Atascocita – Walden – Huffman. The Eagle Springs route takes me on the street where I had my collision last September. School is going to be out but I timed today’s ride to pass the spot around 10:30 when students were not leaving.

The ride began at 9:49 under a mostly cloudy sky, 80 degrees, 80% humidity and a light breeze. I returned home at 12:55 still under the mostly cloudy sky (dark clouds gathered while I was stopped in Huffman), 89 degrees, 55% humidity and a 8.1 mph SSE breeze. Around 12:40 when I was in the O’Rielly Auto Parts parking lot going home the Creekwood Middle School must have let out releasing many students to walk down the sidewalk where I cut through the Bank of America to get on the side streets and home. I had to wait about 5 minutes until the big groups passed.

Speaking of passing I saw one other bicyclist while I rode east on Old Atascocita Road and I waved but got no response.

I stopped as usual at the Huffman Chevron for a snack and drink break. I watched the sky as some dark clouds approached then moved to the west. I hoped I didn’t ride in any rain on the way home and I did not. I rode 34.85 miles and averaged 14.7 mph. This ride was an uneventful one with nothing really getting my attention. By starting a little earlier I did get home before the temperature got up to 90. I perspired heavily and my jersey and bandana were soaked when I got home.

Statistics after today: 145.59 miles this week, 174.71 miles in June, 2574 miles for the year.

Tomorrow the weather should repeat today’s. I plan on biking though not more than 30 miles. On Saturday I will ride the Spindletop Spin in Beaumont. I made a hotel reservation using booking.com and while I biking I got a phone call telling me the hotel could not accept my reservation because they did not have any rooms; some error in their computer didn’t update the room inventory. I reserved a room at Super 8 and no problem so far. I used Super 8’s website this time.

So, it turns out that Dallas isn’t that serious about its bike-helmet ordinance after all.
I say that for two reasons.
The first one is obvious: City officials are backpedaling on the most comprehensive helmet law in the state, one that requires all cyclists to wear helmets.
Some council members want to repeal the whole law. Others want to limit it to cyclists under the age of 17, which seems like a good compromise to me.

It has been almost 18 months since 23-year-old Matthew Atwell learned he would bike from Texas to Alaska — a trip of 70 days and more than 4,500 miles.
Atwell, an aerospace engineering graduate from the University of Texas, is part of an annual cancer awareness ride, the Texas 4000, which rolled through Dallas on Wednesday morning from Austin, bound for Alaska. He and 78 other cyclists are dedicating their miles to cancer victims and survivors.

Thanks to CenterPoint, We’ll Get Biking Trails and LED Streetlights

We told you last week that a bike plan was on the way for Houston. Thanks to CenterPoint Energy, Houston cyclists have another win to celebrate.
Hiking and biking trails will be allowed along CenterPoint’s utility ROWs (that’s right-of-ways). According to a press release from the mayor’s office, the ROWs will provide north-south connections to Houston’s growing network of trails, most of which either run east and west or are planned to do so.

San Antonio City Council Votes to Remove Bike Lanes on S. Flores

Like many of you, we watched the San Antonio City Council’s decision to remove S. Flores bike lanes with disbelief and disappointment. Despite hearing from many people who ride bikes, including one gentleman who indicated he and his wife began riding for their health after the S. Flores lanes were installed, the city council voted 10-1 remove the bike lanes at a cost to the city of up to $700,000. Council member Shirley Gonzales (District 5) was the lone vote in favor of keeping the bike lanes. (Watch the video of the council meeting here; the bike lanes item begins at 2:27:38).

Bicycle rally hopes to show riders, drivers can share the road

SAN ANTONIO — A group of 40 to 50 bicyclists met at La Tuna Grill on the South Side on Wednesday to ride in a bicycle lane that won’t exist for much longer.
The cyclists formed what Monica Walker and Jaime Santillan called a “solidarity ride” south on South Flores Street before reversing the other direction toward downtown San Antonio.
Walker and Santillan organized the ride after a recent City Council vote to reroute the bike lane away from South Flores.
