2014 Texas 4000 team to cycle through Carthage

AUSTIN, TEXAS (June 3rd, 2014) — The longest annual charity bicycle ride in the world, the Texas 4000 team, will be rolling through Carthage on Saturday, June 7th, 2014, just 8 days after departing from Austin, Texas on to their final destination of Anchorage, Alaska. While in Carthage, the 2014 Texas 4000 Team will celebrate and share Hope, Knowledge and Charity with friends and family before continuing on their 70-day journey.
Seventy-nine, undergraduate and graduate, students from the University of Texas at Austin brave the rain, sleet, wind, snow, heat and will pedal over 4,500 miles in support of the fight against cancer. Along their journey, riders will volunteer at community events that contribute in the fight against cancer and visit with cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, and family members to make educational presentations about cancer prevention and early detection. They also use this time to offer hope, encouragement and share their personal stories to cancer fighters of all ages and to those who have been affected by the disease. The Burleson and Johnson County countryside last Saturday was filled with a stream of bright, colorful cyclists jerseys.
While area residents took note of the almost 1,600 participants in the Honey Tour Bike Ride, the visitors from all areas of Texas and beyond also had to opportunity to take in Burleson.
“To develop a local economy, you always want to see visitors in the area,” said Justin Bond, Burleson’s economic development manager. “Cyclists hitting our community in a 24-hour period reach businesses all across the city.”
Based upon data from 2013, those cyclists aren’t necessarily neighbors and friends from the immediate community.

Last Month was the Bike League’s National Bike Month and May 16 was National Bike To Work Day. For the third year, local bike advocacy groups, worked with BikeDFW, DART and NCTCOG to set up bike commuter Energizer Stations throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area. This year, we were able to set up 9 Stations.

Wind Can Wear You Down

As any bicyclist knows wind can wear you down. For the first 21 miles I rode into the wind and my legs wore out. Whenever I was exposed to the wind my speed dropped to 14 mph and at times 12 mph. When I finally reached Huffman- Eastgate Road on FM1960 I turned west and the legs responded by increasing my speed up to 19+ mph. The 25 miles to home were much easier with a tailwind or at least it not in my face. The effort was producing perspiration and about every 2 minutes or so I dipped my chin to the right to let it run off.

No waiting for a service man today so I pulled out 9:34 under a partly cloudy sky, 79 degrees, and 76% humidity. The wind didn’t seem that strong but there was no pace I got out of it until the Huffman-Eastgate Road turn. I reached the Huffman Chevron at 24.4 miles and took a break to enjoy the breeze since I wasn’t fighting it sitting still. While I was resting a young man walked through the station pump area with a backpack and I didn’t really pay too much attention as he walked west along FM1960 but not too long after he walked by he returned and then just walked around the station. I am not sure what was going on with him.

The ride was 36.18 miles at 14.6 mph average speed. I rode this general direction two days in a row to set up tomorrow’s ride to the north. I thought I might be in Huffman today when the Amtrak train went through but I was an hour or more early so I didn’t wait around. I did see two other riders while I was going east on the Lake Houston causeway. They were riding to the west.

Arriving back home at 12:43 the sky had a couple of dark gray areas. About 30 minutes after I got home it rained for about 3 or 4 minutes. The temperature was 87 with 56% humidity at the conclusion of the ride.

For Schuyler Dale, no task is too large to keep her friend’s spirit alive — even if it means biking from Austin to Alaska, with a stop in Denton along the way.
Dale, now 21, was a student at Guyer High School when she met Makenna Loerwald while playing volleyball. The girls clicked and became friends, but this year, Loerwald lost her battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare adolescent cancer typically found in the bone. Loerwald died in February at age 22.

UT Students Gear up for 4,000 Mile Bike Ride

(KCEN) — Over 1.5 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year alone, but students at University of Texas, Austin are on an incredible journey to fight against the disease.
Ashley Wallace was only 7-years-old when her mom lost a second battle with breast cancer. “She really inspired me to just see the good in things and celebrate the life she had,” Wallace said.
So that’s exactly what she’s doing this summer, biking from Austin all the way to Anchorage, Alaska. It’s called Texas 4,000 and each of the 78 UT students are riding with a purpose.

Longhorn Bicycle Riders Come To College Station For Texas 4000 Cancer Ride

COLLEGE STATION – A group of Longhorns invaded College Station by bicycle Monday but it’s all for a good cause.
27 present students and recent graduates of The University of Texas stopped for the night at College Station High School as part of Texas 4000.
It’s a 4,500 mile bicycle ride from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska with 78 riders going on three routes including the Brazos Valley.
This group started the morning in Temple.
They gave a presentation about their ride raising money to fight cancer and they’ll be staying with host families overnight.
So far they’ve raised more than $550,000 with a goal of $600,000.

So after a week or so of ‘off’ time after the Warda race, I was back on the bike this past week.  With the school year winding down, I was able to get in a couple of evening rides that I typically cannot make.  Given we had gotten a lot of rain in the past few days, I opted to make those road rides.
On Tuesday, I saddled up for a regular Tuesday evening group ride out of Lakeway.  I’ve seen several of my friends make this group ride on Strava, so I had hoped to be joining a friendly bunch.  Turns out the rain scared most everyone away as only 5 of us showed up to ride.  I didn’t know any of them, but thought it’d be fun.

Yellow Bike Project’s Collective Meetings: On the first Tuesday of every month, which this month will be June 3 at 7 p.m., Yellow Bike holds its collective meeting, an open forum that the general public is welcome to attend. No rain on today’s ride if I don’t count the dozen tiny drops that appeared on the Garmin 510 screen around 12.2 miles. They quickly disappeared as did the cloud from where they might have fell. The partly cloudy sky surrounded the ride to Atastcocita – Walden – Huffman and the temperature ranged from 83 at the start (11:37) to 90 at the finished (2:29). The wind was stronger than I thought at 15 mph from the east with 21 mph gusts. That probably accounts for the extra effort I had to deploy when I had a headwind. Once I got to FM2100 and rode to the north the wind was not such an issue. This was when I made up most of the average speed I lost before that.

To add some distance I went north from the Huffman Chevron to Smith Road before turning west. The ride was 34.04 miles at 14.9 mph average speed. While I was stopped at the Chevron station I enjoyed the nice breeze while I was under the canopy over the pumps. I switched to PowerAde since it was less expensive from the fountain machine. The blue flavor is not my favorite but it was okay.

June miles: 63.16. Week to date miles: 34.04. Year to date miles: 2462.
