About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

GS Tenzing Crit Junior Open Race Report

Race report from Chris Deg        texasbikeracing.com

I had raced Friday and Saturday, as well as past Tuesday, and have not been getting the results that I have been looking for. Going into day three of Texas “Speed Week” – the Bicycles Plus GS Tenzing Junior Open crit, the team and I had high hopes. I knew the competition would be stiff having Sebastian York (AYC) and other strong juniors racing. We were able to get a squad of three together consisting of Jefferey May, Mauricio Garcia, and myself. Knowing that I had two other teammates in the field made me feel comfortable. The course suited me well, and my legs were feeling fresh after having a hard day on the bike yesterday. We discussed three different team tactics to be sure to cover all grounds, knowing that Sebastian was hungry for a win; we knew it wouldn’t be easy.
We were lined up ready to start, and as soon as the whistle blew, I went. I knew if I was going to have a chance to get on the podium, or a win, I would have to do all I could to leave everyone behind. Coming around corners three and…

Injured cyclists will make full recoveries

BRIAN PORTER        www.burlesonstar.net

Two participants in Saturday’s Honey Tour Bike Ride are expected to make full recoveries after separate accidents. The cyclists were transported to Texas Health Harris Hospital in Fort Worth.
One cyclist hit an oil patch on a road and has broken bones in one leg, Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce President Sherri Sechrist said. The other rider is believed to have been struck by a pickup truck and has been released from the hospital.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with both cyclists and their families,” Sechrist said. “I am so thankful both riders will recover from what could have been serious accidents. When a bicycle has…

Heather M. Goodwin        starlocalmedia.com/lewisvilleleader

One area resident has chosen to honor the memory of her father by embarking on a bicycle ride that will take her from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska.
Ria Cho, a 2013 graduate from The Colony High School and current student at The University of Texas at Austin, is working toward being a team member of the 2015 Texas 4000. The group makes the 4,500-mile ride as part of its mission to…

Midlander cycles from California to Florida

By Rachael Gleason        www.mrt.com

Facing a 25 mile-per-hour headwind during a demanding 110-mile ride along the Texas-Mexico border, Midland bicyclist Gail Strain remembered her training.
For a year leading up to the 3,000-mile coast-to-coast bicycle tour of the southern states, Strain rode her bike at least 100 miles every week.
After breezing through the desert landscapes of southern California, Arizona and New Mexico in March, she arrived in West Texas — her home of nearly 20 years — with…

Houston Grand Criterium (Cat 4)

by Blake Powitzky        txbikeracing.com

Sorry for the late post, but I guess it’s better late than never!
After racing at Coldspring the day before, my legs felt better than expected for another race the following day.
Once again I did the straight cat 4 race and fully expected it to be fast and hard. It was just as I expected with a 25.1 mph average speed.
This year I focused on riding smarter to ensure a better position each time through the hairpin turn. While I didn’t manage to get on the front through that turn on every lap, I did so the…

Jester King ride

The Violet Crown Sports Association

The second annual Jester King Brewery All Clubs Ride is Saturday, June 7th, 8:30 a.m. (Not to be confused with the King of Jester time trial that took place 2004 – 2006).
It’s free and everyone is welcomed. The ride starts and finishes at the Jester King Brewery (13005 Fitzhugh Road) and is an out and back on Fitzhugh Rd. to Johnson City, about 50 miles. No cost for the ride however riders may want to stick around afterwards to buy beer and pizza.

May 31st [Atlas or Steiner Ranch] and June 1st [Hula Hut or Social] Rides!

Steiner Ranch Cycling Club

Saturday was reported to have a pretty good turnout.  Everyone mostly stayed together for the Avery Ranch loop, but the group split at Parmer and Avery Ranch so that some could go on to do almost 80 miles by adding on the newer section of Ronald Reagan as well as Liberty Hill. Although the group was rained on, they had a blast averaging near 20mph over the entire ride.
Sunday started off with nasty weather reports and only 5 of riders attended for a very short, wet ride.
Please mark your calendar for June 7th as we will be doing the Jester King Brewery ride again.  It is going to be a lot of fun and it is an all Clubs ride so we hope to have all Clubs in…

We will be in the Blue South parking lot on the east side of FC Dallas stadium.  We are asking that you park as far to the SE as possible, away from the stadium.  This move will also change…

Dallas police: 45-year-old man on a bicycle was killed in Sunday evening hit-and-run along Scyene Road

By Robert Wilonsky        crimeblog.dallasnews.com

Dallas police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a man on a bicycle Sunday evening.
According to a police report, a 45-year-old man was riding his bike in the right-hand lane of eastbound Scyene Road, near C.A. Tatum Jr. Elementary School, when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. The report says the impact threw the cyclist “up into the air” near the N. St. Augustine Road intersection. He landed — “partially” — on the sidewalk and the grassy median.
The report says the driver drove off, “without stopping to render aid.”
The cyclist, a 45-year-old man about eight miles from his East Dallas home, was transported to…

Power to the pedal: Cyclists take the streets in Uptown Ciclovía

By ANDREW SCOGGIN        www.dallasnews.com

David and Karen Shuford had to work together to bike to Uptown on Monday.
The Arlington couple pedaled their way from Forest Lane and North Central Expressway on their deep-red tandem bicycle to reach Uptown Ciclovía, a one-day event that closed parts of Cedar Springs Road and Harwood Street to motorized traffic to promote biking, walking and other car-free activities.
The Shufords began biking for health a few years ago. When on their own bicycles, Karen, 57, averages about 25 miles on a ride; David, 58, can do 50 miles no sweat.
“This is just a casual ride today,” David Shuford said.
Ciclovías, sometimes called “open streets,” started in Colombia, and in recent years the concept has taken…

Flags Flying on Memorial Day

Texbiker.net Posted on May 26, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

The rain was on the southwest side of Houston when I started the ride at 10:59 but the sky was overcast in Kingwood. Believing the weather forecast that rain might appear in the afternoon I set out to Huffman. All went well until around the 12 mile mark when I felt a couple of rain drops and a big one landed on the Garmin 510. From that point I kept a wary eye on the clouds. At Huffman I took a break and checking the weather radar on my phone it looked like rain was falling on Kingwood. I made a mental note of some places I can get out of the rain and set off towards home. Again a few rain drops landed with most coming when I stopped to take these pictures on Atascocita Shores Drive. (click on the image to enlarge it)

5-26-2014 Memorial Day Ride-1
5-26-2014 Memorial Day Ride-2
5-26-2014 Memorial Day Ride-3

There were many other homes with flags out to remember those who served our country. I like these homes because they were together. We have a flag out our house as well.

I continue to ride slow. The route totaled 32.05 miles and I averaged 14.5 mph. The 21 days off plus the hospital stay sapped my conditioning and I am going to work back up to where I was before. May miles reached 200.11. The wind was 16.1 mph from the SE which did not help my riding speed and when I did get a tailwind I was able to get my speed up to 18 – 19 mph.

The avoidance of Diet Pepsi continues. At the Huffman Chevron I drank Gatorade to wash down the Kashi trailmix bar and cookies.

Tuesday and Wednesday still look wet according to the forecast. If it is wet I will watch the Giro d’Italia on BeInSport via Dish.
