About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Holding Up Traffic – Why Do I Feel Guilty?

Bike Noob

Had a nice ride Saturday morning on a favorite route of mine — the so-called “Zoo Ride.” But I don’t often do the Zoo Ride on Saturday, and I was taken aback by the amount of traffic as opposed to Sunday.
Of course, there’s always going to be less traffic on Sunday. It’s just that, on one section of the Saturday ride, I felt like I was contributing to the problem.
UnknownIt’s a two-lane road called Thomas Springs. It’s a nice connector between two other roads on the route, only about a mile and half long, but it has no shoulders to speak of. That…

Brotherhood Riders to bike through Alto

By Kim Foli        dailysentinel.com

A group of 50 emergency personnel will make its way through Alto this month on the way to Houston. But they aren’t driving. Instead, they’ll ride bicycles all the way from Louisiana.
Called The Brotherhood Riders, the group has made long-distance treks every year since 2007 to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty. This time, they will honor 19 firefighters who died in 2013, including those lost in the West fertilizer plant explosion.

Fuel to push the pedal

By Jen Haugen        www.austindailyherald.com

Taking a bike ride may seem leisurely, but for many who bike long distances, it requires the right fuel for all that pedal power.
Whether you choose track-style, road-racing or mountain biking, it’s essential that you are energizing with the right foods and fluids. A road-racing biker, for example, requires endurance for long rides and hilly terrain and can burn between 600 to 900 calories per hour. Track and mountain biking require intense, intermittent bursts of strength and power. No matter what style of biking you choose, to feel energized throughout the…

Urban Texans Lead Nation in Not Biking to Work

By Terence P. Jeffrey        cnsnews.com

(CNSNews.com) – Among large cities with 200,000 or more people, according to a report released this week by the Census Bureau, five communities in Texas led the nation in having the smallest percentage of workers commuting by bicycle.
In the border city of Laredo, Texas, in the five year period from 2008 through 2012, 0.0 percent of…

Three inspirational days riding with President Bush, warriors in W100K (Video)

By Dr. Marc Siegel        www.foxnews.com

There are beautiful rocks of all varieties on the bike trails at Prairie Chapel Ranch, former President George W. Bush’s home in Crawford, Texas. The shifting terrain and slopes challenge riders. The single track weaves between the trees with just the width of a bicycle so there is little room for error.
I have come to Crawford for three days from May 1 – 3 to report on the fourth annual Warrior 100K, a three-day bike ride to honor service members injured in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Sixteen warriors, some of them veterans and some still on active duty, were…

Joaquin on Water

Words and Photos : Nicole Ortega / De Mis Ojos        texasbikeracing.com

Every now and then, a cyclist comes along almost completely under the radar at first and then consistently continues to impress. Often, determination and hunger for the sport set this cyclist apart. Joaquin Najar is one of these athletes. You’ve probably noticed him before during a race with his steady pace and bright pink jersey.
He started riding bikes two years ago by delivering food downtown with a little single-speed conversion bike and limited knowledge of cycling. These days, he rides a fixed gear and races road and cyclocross. It’s a rarity to see a young Hispanic man get engulfed by the competitive cycling bug, at least here in…

430-mile Bike Out Hunger ride raises funds, awareness

By Kalie Lowrie / Texas Baptist Communications

BOERNE—Forty cyclists from across the state pedaled at least some portion of the way from Boerne to Wichita Falls—with stops in Fredericksburg, San Saba, Brownwood, Abilene and Graham—to raise awareness about poverty and raise money for the Texas Baptist Hunger Offering.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports 4.8 million Texans—17.9 percent of the population—live in poverty. Participants in the fifth annual Bike Out Hunger ride spent a week biking 430 miles, raising about $50,000 for the hunger offering.
“Riding across Texas isn’t nearly as hard as not having food to eat,” said Christopher Whitehead from First Baptist Church in Waxahachie. “This is a great ride to be a part of. It’s fun meeting…

Interscholastic Cycling April 2014 Recap

www.usacycling.org

USA Cycling works with several interscholastic leagues that allow athletes to compete for their schools in the tradition of collegiate cycling. Each league is unique with different disciplines during different seasons but all focus on allowing students to participate in a sport that until recently was not available within a school structure. Read the following recaps from our league directors to find out more about their league and the current racing seasons. If you are interested in starting a league in your area, or getting involved with an existing one please feel free to contact USA Cycling’s Interscholastic and Club Development Coordinator Emily Palmer or one of the league directors below.

Biking & Walking in San Antonio

Bike Out Hunger Makes Stop in Brownwood, Raises Awareness and Funds for Hunger Relief

Written by Lisa Tipton        www.brownwoodnews.com

Forty cyclists rode through Brownwood on Wednesday, May 7, for the Fifth Annual Bike Out Hunger, raising money and awareness for hunger needs through the Texas Baptist Hunger Offering.
This year’s route reaches across more than 400 miles from Boerne to Wichita Falls. The team arrived in Brownwood on Wednesday afternoon.
Local riders include Pastor Rodney McGlothlin, Debbie McGlothlin, Jeremy Johnson and Greg Church.  Church stated that this was the longest ride he had ever participated in and although it was challenging, it was very enjoyable.
“It was fun, really tough in a couple of spots. Goldthwaite to Zephyr seemed like nothing but one big hill after another,” explained Church.  “ It was a challenging ride as it was the…

Dallas has a new bicycle coordinator who’s very eager to roll out the bike plan (from 2011)

By Robert Wilonsky        cityhallblog.dallasnews.com

The city of Dallas has been without a bicycle coordinator for almost a year following the June adios of Max Kalhammer, who came to Dallas from D.C. in 2009 and stayed around just long enough to help launch the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan and then grow frustrated with his inability to roll out more than a few miles of bike lanes, most in or around downtown. But fret not, cyclists, as the position has been filled.
One week ago today Ashley Haire strapped on her (completely unnecessary?) helmet and went to work at 1500 Marilla, following stints as a project manager with the Texas Department of Transportation and…
