About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Have you read one of our Ride Reports? Wheel Brother Ride Reports are first hand reports from recently past races, to give you the scoop on exactly what it is like to ride it! Ride For Heroes – 2014 – April 19th, 2014-
Went and made the drive out to Aledo on Easter weekend to do the Ride For Heroes.  First time for this ride so I did a bit of homework to see what it was all about.  Web site says its a rambling ride through Parker Co and has plenty of hills.  No problem, I’m ok with that so we went ( my oldest son and I).
Drive was easy, directions to the Aledo HS easy as well.  We drove down from the speedway area and were there in 40 minutes.  The start/finish is in the high school parking lot, so there is plenty of parking.  Equally easy was the sign in.  Plenty of volunteers, so we were in and out in five minutes.
Got lined up in the HS driveway behind a local fire truck that would lead us out.  This ride benefits the…

Success This Time Riding to Crosby

Texbiker.net Posted on May 3, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

What I couldn’t ride last Saturday I completed today. Last Saturday I tried to ride to Crosby and back but a series of problems stopped me. The last time the weather was misty for the middle part of the route I ended up doing but today the sky was about as blue as it can get. The temperature was 77 as I left home at 11:07. I was going to wear the short and long sleeve jersey combination but the forecast said the high would be 88 and that amount of jerseys would be too much. I selected a bright orange Canari long sleeve jersey to block the sun. I needed something to block the wind though. As long as I rode to the east the wind was a tailwind but whenever I rode south or west I slowed down to 14 mph or so. Going east on Old Atascocita Road I stopped to take pictures. I was thinking how country it was only 17 miles from my house in Houston. This gallery has pictures from Old Atascocita Road, Ramsey Road and Crosby. I couldn’t resist the red caboose at Crosby Park.

[wppa type=”slide” album=”324″ size=”auto”][/wppa]

I cannot remember the last time I rode this route. It ended up at 47.07 miles long meeting my goal of over 40 miles. The tailwind allowed me to get above 20 mph for several stretches to offset the 14 mph into the wind. Going south on Ramsey Road I was out in the open as the wind came over the grass fields. I was the tallest thing around and the wind kept pushing me to the left side of the road. I turned left onto Louis Road and the tailwind helped me get back up to 20 mph. The next right hand turn threw me back into the wind but I reached some trees in about a half mile. The road took several turns until I was at US90 riding to Crosby. That was into the wind all the way. I stopped at the Crosby Park in Crosby for a few minutes before riding to FM2100 to go to Huffman. I pulled into a Valero station at Gum Gulley creek to refill my water bottle with ice and water. The cold water tasted good. From there it was about 5 miles to the Huffman Chevron where I took a 30 minute break. Leaving the Chevron station meant 3 miles into the wind and my legs needed a rest.

Just north of Crosby on FM2100 I stopped at the traffic light for Diamond Head Drive into Newport. Looking to the right side of the road I saw a sign for the Murfturf Turf Farm. I had to laugh at the name. There are several grass farms facing FM2100 on the way to Huffman.

Back on the bike I rode west on FM1960 and found the shoulder of the causeway to be clean. The sweeper had made a pass since my last time here. The glass and debris was gone. Monday the Tour de Rouge will be going east over the causeway on the way to New Orleans. This might have encouraged the sweeper to go on the east bound side.

I reached home at 3:02 with the temperature at 89 degrees. The ride from FM1960 to Kingwood goes among the trees holding the wind back most of the time.

Today’s weather was picture perfect for biking. The humidity was 21% drying up the perspiration almost before it could come out of my skin. The next day I might ride is May 21st. I am thinking of the time off as recovery and rest days.

So far I rode 214.4 miles this week, 111.35 miles in May and 2248 miles year to date.

No Breakfast Taco

Texbiker.net Posted on May 2, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

No breakfast taco at Stripes today when I stopped for a rest break. They were cleaning out the steam table and I was glad I brought a Kashi trail mix bar and cookies. Before I got to Stripes I was debating whether I should get a breakfast taco but the decision was made for me. I rode to the north to New Caney and then Gene Campbell Road. I was planning on biking the usual route but at Stripes I thought about how to add a couple of miles to the route. Instead of going south I went to the north from Stripes on Valley Ranch Parkway and then through Forest Colony to the US59 south service road. From there I went south to Auburn Trails subdivision and went west to Oakhurst. Normally when I ride through Auburn Trails it is the opposite direction so I had to think a little bit about the turns to take to go out to Briar Circle and onto Oakhurst. I don’t remember riding this particular route before. I accomplished my goal and the ride was 40.66 miles. I averaged 15.7 mph aided by a WNW 6 mph breeze. There did seem to be any headwind most of the time probably because this route has a lot of trees. FM1314 is the most open and the traffic offset the breeze as I rode to the SE.

I managed to miss all but one of the school dismissals. That was one reason I went through Forest Colony rather than Briar Tree. Forest Colony has no schools while Briar Tree has two. The one I got caught in was Bear Branch Elementary in Kingwood. I was stopped by the traffic and another bicyclist pulled up on my left. He asked if this was a good or bad time and I said bad time. When the traffic moved he rode ahead as I made my way through some of the cars.

Today’s weather was warmer than yesterday. I rolled out the driveway at 12:15 with 74 degrees and an overcast sky. I wore a short sleeve jersey over a long sleeve jersey and bike shorts. The sun was getting through the overcast enough for it to feel warmer than yesterday. I think the wind direction had something to do with it. I got home at 3:31 with the sky still overcast but the temperature at 80, like the forecast called for. Another favorable thing is the humidity has been low since the cool front went past. It was 23% when I finished today’s ride.

The Stradalli RP-14 continues to be a joy to ride. I like the Bar Fly 2.0 addition. It moves the Garmin Edge 510 out front of the handlebar and my shadow so I can read it better. I don’t have to glance down so far from looking at the road ahead. The Schwalbe and Continental Gatorskin tire combination is performing smoothly. The wider rear tire *700 x 25) does not feel like it has more resistance than the front 700 x 23 Schwalbe. My pedaling effort seems to be be stronger on the Stradalli than the Motobecane. My position on the bike is not as stretched on the Stradalli.

May miles increased to 64.28. tomorrow I want to ride at least 36 miles to put May at 100 or more. For the week I rode 167.33 miles and year to date 2201 miles.

Tomorrow the forecast is for 88 degrees and clear. I look forward to the warmth.
