About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Kickin’ Butt and Taking Names : Rob Sandusky

by Anne Clarrissimeaux        texasbikeracing.com

You could say the Dallas race scene has been a little amped up in the past few weeks. It’s as though a gauntlet was thrown down that caused some races in particular to be just that much faster, that much harder.
At a recent Thursday night race at Fair Park, a couple of the more recognized, stronger P1 riders battled for the series leader jersey. And last weekend’s Matrix Challenge brought with it large fields full of strong riders.
These were races that would separate the men from the boys, so to speak.
But only in the figurative sense. Tucked into the middle of the pack of that high-speed Thursday night race was 16-year-old Rob Sandusky of Matrix Cycling Club. This sprite of a racer––sporting a mop of…

By Pam LeBlanc

Nate Aikele was flying toward the finish line in the last lap of a cycling race at The Driveway in East Austin on April 10 when he glanced over his shoulder to see how far ahead he was of the other racers.
In a flash, he veered off the winding, paved course and crashed into a tree.
Aikele, 30, a podiatry student from Midwestern University in Phoenix who was working a clinical rotation in San Antonio, broke his back, crushed several…

A Loud Man at Stripes

Texbiker.net Posted on April 25, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

Until I reached the Stripes station on FM1314 at Valley Ranch Parkway I thought the highlight of the ride would be the spring fragrances my nose picked out as I rode. But as I pulled up to the pumps to get some towels I could hear someone talking loudly by the store. As I rode up there I could a man dressed in a t-shirt, shorts, sandals with a beard. He was talking about God and Jesus and how they watched over him. He wasn’t talking to anyone in particular as he walked around. Whenever someone walked nearby he said hello and said “have a blessed day”. He was well mannered. I went inside to get a breakfast taco and a Diet Pepsi. He was still there when I came back outside. When I walked to my bike the young man said he like my bike, wondered if I had been the Olympics. I laughed and acknowledged his comments. I sat down and he asked God to watch over me as I biked (this was important later on during my ride). He continued to talk and I heard a lot about his family and God’s watching over them. Several minutes later a Montgomery County deputy sheriff cruiser pulled up and the deputy got out. As he approached the man he asked him several questions. The man continued to be well mannered and answer each question. Sometimes his answer was not what you would expect but always with respect to the deputy. The deputy talked on his radio and not too long after that I heard a siren coming from the east on FM1314. A Montgomery Hospital District medic truck arrived (M34). Two women medics emerged from the truck and walked toward the man. As they got near him they talked to the deputy and then asked the man several questions: What is it? Where is he? (He answered the Stripes station but she wanted the town). They invited him to get in the truck so they could check him out but he refused at first. He eventually agreed and got into the ambulance. While this was going on a New Caney ISD police cruiser, a MCHD supervisor truck, and a Porter FD pickup truck arrived. Later another deputy sheriff pulled up as well.

A shot of the vehicles and people at Stripes on FM1314

A shot of the vehicles and people at Stripes on FM1314

The first deputy picked up the man’s belongings by the store and examined them on the hood of the New Caney ISD SUV. He must not have found anything bad putting them back in the bag and giving it to the medics. The MCHD supervisor walked up to me and asked if I was here while the man was talking and walking around. I said yes but that he had not accosted anyone. One time during the man’s walking and talking a pickup pulled in with an animal cage in the back. The man walked closer to the pickup and talked to the animal in the cage ( I am guessing it was a dog). A little time later the ambulance pulled out of Stripes I guess to take the man to the hospital. during all of this I heard this from the man:

  • he is 32 years old
  • he slept beside the road last night, the best sleep he had in a long time
  • he was in St. Luke’s hospital a week or so ago
  • his sister raised him and they were very poor
  • he loves his wife
  • continually praised God and Jesus

Back to the ride. I went north to New Caney under a bright blue sky. A gentle breeze was enough to keep me cool but not impede my riding. The temperature started at 78 when I left home at 11:01, going up to 88 when I returned at 1:59. While I was at Striped the MCHD supervisor came up to me a second time and asked how far I was biking today. He said he biked over by Conroe and named several roads I have been on. I gave him a Texbiker business card to check on. The route today totaled 36.55 miles at a 15.9 mph average speed.

Excitement continued to happen near Strips. As I was waiting at the traffic light to cross FM1314 a Jeep Wrangler going west veered onto the shoulder at a fast clip and just before reaching the intersection veered back onto the west lane in front of a dump truck to avoid a car turning right in front of him. Not a good move.

Later on the Stripe’s man’s prayer for God to watch over me came to fruition. I was riding on Kingwood Place in front of Emeritus when out of a left crossover a silver car started to pull out in front of me. All of a sudden the man driving saw me and slammed on his brakes as I rode in front of his car. God was watching over me during this close call. There must be something about silver cars wanting to pull out in front of me!

April miles now total 716.06. I am within 62 miles of reaching the 778 mile goal. This week I biked 184.58 miles and 1976 miles year to date.

Saturday’s weather looks as good as today’s. I am thinking of biking to Crosby.

LETTER: Cyclist killed

themonitor.com

A heartfelt expression of sorrow for the last, previous and future bicyclists killed or injured on our roadways. Circumstances as reported of the April 10 accident are especially onerous due to the absolute lack of humanity by the accused. However, there are a few questions which were not answered, such as: Did the bicycle have all appropriate safety equipment and lighting as required by law? Was the rider “as near as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway?” Was he applying all the other rights and duties of all other vehicle operators? How was the street lighted and traffic? I’m not saying that any answers to these questions should in…

Undercover Houston Bike Cops Bust Dangerous Drivers

by Brad        urbanvelo.org

Houston has a thriving bicycle culture, but ranks among one of the least safe places to ride in the country according to the Alliance for Biking and Walking. Fast Company is reporting on a new program to catch dangerous drivers in the act, and bring cycling fatalities in the city to “Goal Zero.”
“We asked them to put police officers in plain clothes on bicycles with support in the area, so if someone did pass them too closely, they could call on their support to pull over that driver and issue a citation,” explains…

Cyclist uses long pole, video camera to remind Houston drivers to stay away

By Craig Hlavaty        www,chron.com

A Houston bicyclist is making a statement about safety by filming the often angry drivers who hit a pole he has sticking out three feet from the side of his bike.
While riding in the designated bike lanes of the Memorial area, Dan Morgan sought a way to prove that some motorists aren’t following a law stating that cars should not come within three feet of a cyclist.
“The whole purpose of the flag was to demonstrate that we exist on the roads,” Morgan said. “That flag could…

A Little Shorter Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 24, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

The ride was a little shorter than what I have done earlier this week. I headed off to Huffman via Atascocita and Walden biking 32.66 miles averaging 15.2 mph. I suspect the legs need some recovery time before I can get the average speed up to 16+ mph. The ride was uneventful except as I approached Fairlake Drive to turn right I could see a fire truck and ambulance with lights flashing sitting in the E. Lake Houston Parkway and FM1960 intersection. I couldn’t see what caused the problem but I suspect some kind of accident.

I had to delay the ride start some today to give the rain cloud time to move out of the area. My wife and I went to a meeting and were returning home about 11:20 when rain drops hit the windshield, not many. When we got home we heard some thunder too. I had a couple of chores to finish and by the time they were done the rogue clouds had disappeared. I started the ride at 1:02 and finished at 3:51. The sky was overcast the whole ride but the temperature stayed warm ranging 81 to 82. Wind was from the south at 8 mph not causing much of an issue for biking.

Stopping at the Huffman Chevron for a break, snacks and drink was nice. Sitting under the canopy the breeze was just right. I did wear a long sleeve jersey and shorts. The long sleeves were so I didn’t have to put sunscreen on. It turned out to be comfortable. As prepared to leave the station the sky to west looked gray and maybe threatening. I saw a number of the vehicles coming from that direction with their lights on and wondered if it was raining. I figured there were a few places I could get out of the rain if it caught me before going on the causeway. If I saw rain on the west side I could wait on the east side of Lake Houston. When I got to Lake Houston there wasn’t any rain but the wind was cooler while I rode over the lake.

At one spot on the ride I ran over a piece of metal with my rear tire and I feared a flat would happen but nothing came of it. I may not have a high confidence level with the tires (Schwalbe Ultremo 700x23c) since I have had a couple of flats. I been debating on what tire to use after these wear out. Maybe these will do better and win the choice.

I am making progress on the April mileage goal: 679.51 miles, less than 100 to reach the goal with 6 days left in April. 148.03 miles this week and 1939 miles year to date. I biked 20 days so far in April.

Tomorrow could reach 87 degrees with partly cloudy skies. There is a rumor that Monday might get in the 90’s. Bike is planned.
