About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Stripes sells Eco85

Texbiker.net Posted on April 4, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 2, 2016

After riding two days in a row to Huffman I went north on today’s ride. With the Grand Parkway construction on US59 at the old Community Drive overpass I elected to ride the reverse of a ride I used to do before the construction. Leaving Kingwood I went west to Lone Star College before going north through Oakhurst. From Oakhurst I rode Old Sorters Road to Sorters Road and then to FM1314. Until I turned west onto FM13154 I fought the wind especially when I got in open spots with nothing to break the wind. The front moved through during the night leaving some rain and wind. I started the ride at 1:29 under a bright blue sky, 72 degrees and a NNE 17 mph wind with 25 mph gusts.

Because of the wind I wore a long sleeve jersey and a windbreaker jacket above bike shorts. The sun kept me warm and comfortable without over heating too much. This particular jacket has plenty of vents and fits snugly so not much flaps in the wind. Once I reached Cumberland Crossing I turned back to Porter on FM1314 with a nice tailwind. I zipped over the 3+ miles to the Stripes station where I took a break eating a Kashi trail mix bar and two Kashi cookies washing them down with a Diet Pepsi. (Lots of product names)

Stripes sells Eco85 fuel so while I was there I checked the price. We are getting a new Jeep Grand Cherokee which can use E85. There was a man fueling a Nissan sporty type car with E85 and I asked him what kind of mileage he got. He said 20 mpg is typical. I asked if he used unleaded regular and he said the last time was 3 months ago. E85 was priced $3.209 versus regular at $3.359. If use a Stripes cash card the prices are $3.059 and $3.329, respectively. I think E85 fuel efficiency is not as high as regular so that accounts for some of the price difference. I wonder if low demand keeps the price down as well.

I biked 31.34 miles on today’s route averaging 15.6 mph. I got back home at 4:10. The sky was still a nice blue with a few thin clouds, 79.9 degrees and the wind still kicking it up at 10 form the north with 24 mph gusts. Mileage standings after today’s ride: 165.71 miles this week; 126.4 miles for April, 1386 miles year to date. With 4 riding days so far in April I am making good progress to reach my 778 mile goal; 652 miles to go.

I have been thinking about riding the Katy Ram Challenge tomorrow (Saturday) but the weather looks iffy. Rain could be moving in before I would finish. I may get up early to check the weather. If the weatherman is wrong then I can still give it a run to Katy.

Ride 2 Recovery. Texas challenge

By Daniel Cernero, Sentinel Sports Editor        www.forthoodsentinel.com

Soldiers lined Fort Hood streets to wave flags, yell and cheer, welcoming the roughly 200 riders participating in Day 4 of the Ride 2 Recovery’s Texas Challenge March 26 at the Great Place.
After entering the post’s main gate, the riders – with more than 100 Purple Heart awardees in their midst – were greeted with an overflow of support, many exchanging high-fives with Soldiers as they approached III Corps Headquarters. There, surrounding the flagpole as winds picked up and rain began to fall, the cyclists had the chance to soak in all of the support from Fort Hood leaders and from other fellow Soldiers.
Chap. (Capt.) James Pritchard, a member of Fort Hood’s Warrior Transition Brigade, described it as an amazing experience.
“Even though we had not-so-great weather, with it beginning to…

Leadville Qualifier Draws Over 500 Racers

The Austin Rattler was the first stop of 5 on Lifetime’s 2014 Leadville Race Series, offering riders the opportunity to not only solidify a spot in the Leadville 100 this August by way of a top race finish or local lottery, but to also simply have a great day of bike riding, Texas-style.
Doubling in size to an impressive 506 racers this year since its inception only 3 years ago, the ‘Rattler is quickly becoming popular on its own, regardless of whether riders wish to qualify for Leadville or not. And while the general vibe of the event is much more of a…

I Got Misty Eyes

Texbiker.net Posted on April 3, 2014 by Rick AnkrumNovember 30, 2016

I thought I fixed the Garmin 510 after yesterday’s problems but after rolling out the driveway I saw the cadence sensor was not working. Pulling over I went to setup and enabled the sensor function and pressed the search icon. A beep sounded and the sensors began recording. I am not sure how the sensor function got turned off. Fortunately this was within 75 feet of leaving the driveway. Now with the Garmin backup I set off on the route to Huffman. I had two goals on this ride: get to Huffman in time to see the Amtrak train going to New Orleans and get back home before any rain. Sad to say I failed on both of these.

Either the Amtrak train beat me there or I did not take long enough at the Huffman Chevron for the train to pass. As far as the rain goes when I got south of Kingwood Drive on the way to Atascocita a light mist started. The mist stayed with me until I returned from Huffman crossing backover Kingwood Drive. When I stopped in Huffman I wiped the water from my sunglasses (not really needed for the sun but they kept my glasses dry) and helmet before heading back home. I put on sunscreen before biking and I should have made it water repellent. The temperature was 75 when I started (12:02) and 74 when I finished (2:31). At the beginning wind was from the south at 12 mph with 20 mph gusts. At the conclusion of the ride the gusts disappeared. I am glad I selected a long sleeve jersey to keep somewhat dry and warm. This is the first wet ride for the Stradalli RP-14 Carbon bike. I was wanting to delay that for a while. A quick wipe down when I got home got the bike dry and clean.

The route for today’s ride resembled the one I used on the evening rides before I retired during CDT. Then I tried to bike 25 miles but today I altered the beginning streets and pushed the length to 29.21 miles. Average speed was 15.6 mph. After 3 days April now shows 95.05 miles. The totals 134.37 miles and year to date is 1355 miles. I need 683 miles to reach my April goal of 778 miles.

Tomorrow’s weather will be a little cooler with a high of 72, partly cloudy sky and no rain. A front is supposed to pass through tonight some time.

Cycling’s Catching On In Texas, For A Very Texas Reason

by Elise Hu        www.npr.org

For years, cyclists have faced long odds in Texas, where sprawling highways teem with trucks. Dallas was ranked , several years in a row. But in recent years, the two-wheeled form of transportation has begun to gain ground.
It’s no surprise that progressive Austin — where the disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong still lives — has plenty of cyclists.
“It works here,” says cyclist and pedicabbie Austin Matherne. “Also, the way that downtown is set up, all the entertainment districts are so close together that it really is a viable transportation option for us.”
But these days, bicycles are becoming a bigger conversation across the state, as traffic snarls grow worse. The traffic in Dallas, Austin and Houston routinely…

Riding Reveille Peak Ranch

San Angelo Bicycle Association

The weekend of March 21st, 2014 I went along with the San Angelo High School Mountain Bike Team to the 2014 Reveille Peak Ranch Bike Festival in Burnet Texas.  I was first to arrive at the campsite and so I proceeded to the registration tent.  I met a female rider there, about my age, who was about to pre-ride the trails and invited me along.  I geared up and off we went.  Instantly I knew, she had way more experienced than I.  She told me she was from Grapevine and rides the Grapevine lake trails, including north shore (OUCH)!  We rode about 9 miles of the less difficult trails; a sample of what we would be tackling in the morning in the Medio Fondo.
Saturday morning we line up for the Medio Fondo, 15 mile lap.  There is about 70 riders but some are riding 2 laps, not this girl though!  John Gonzales is at the line with me, we are in the back, ready for a casual ride.  We take off and I’m staying close to the…

Then bike back the 60 miles, hopefully with a typical westerly spring wind. Bike Club will provide a bike trailer for up to 12 bikes and rest stops on the way back. Riders will need to arrange their own transportation to Columbus (with either a non-rider driving the vehicle back or splitting the driving/riding back with a friend). This is a ride-as-fast-you-can ride — in past years, riders have averaged 20-27 mph, thanks to the wind. Randy Limbird, 328-4110. War Eagles Museum is at the Dona Ana Country Airport at Santa Teresa (Take Airport or Artcraft west from McNutt). If the main gate to the museum is closed, you can loop around inside the airport to get to the museum parking lot.)
