About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Schwalbe and Syntace preview dual chamber tire system

by Eric McKeegan        Inside Line

The majority of trail and XC riders have embraced tubeless tires for the increased traction and reduced weight and punctures. But hard charging riders in rough terrain hace always had issue with burping tires on hard landings or even under high cornering loads. I’ve talked to more than a few enduro racers that have gone back to using tubes for just these reasons.
Schwalbe, who seems to have gained a shocking amount of the mountain bike tire market in the last few years, released info about its new dual chamber system to address some of tubeless tires shortcomings, while allowing for even lower tire pressures. The component…

Thank You For Fighting Cancer!

www.texasmountainbiketrails.com

Last weekend it was a huge honor for me to be able to volunteer with the Big Pig Cancer Foundation in helping to score the second annual Ray Porter Memorial 6 hr: Racing Against Cancer.
I wanted to just take a half second and give a shout out to all of the racers and all of the Big Pig team, volunteers and spectators that made the event so special. It was without a doubt the most fun and well managed race I have ever been around. So much so that I was the weak link in the chain. A really humbling experience.
With over 2,300 miles ridden at this year’s race the Big Pig Cancer Foundation was able to raise over $7,500 in net proceeds that will go towards cancer charities, cancer research and direct funding for…

STCC Club Meeting Feb 17 2014

by sooner1        Shawnee Trail Cycling Club

There is a group of your fellow Shawnee Trail Cycling Club members, small in numbers but growing, that are on their bikes and on the road in almost any kind of weather.  Riding in wet weather may not be your cup of tea.  Maybe you have a rule to never start a ride when the moisture’s coming down, but dollars to donuts there will be at least one ride in your life where you get caught out in the wet stuff.  There are some things you definitely should know before that happens to you.
STCC is proud to welcome Michael Gacki as our guest speaker for our February meeting.  Michael’s topic will be something near and dear to our hearts – riding in wet weather.
Michael is a person that has devoted his life to the sport of cycling.  He has been racing at various levels for almost 30 years and is currently a leading member of Fiat Plus Racing, a local…

Gravel Bridge Over the Lake

Texbiker.net Posted on February 13, 2014 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 13, 2014

TxDOT almost made FM1960 over Lake Houston into a gravel road on the shoulders. The sand and gravel spread to combat the forecast rain/ice piled up on the shoulders in both directions. Riding east the gravel gathered into small piles across the shoulder probably from the rain running off. This produced a slight up and down motion as I rode over them. The west bound side was not afflicted with these but as I neared the west side of the causeway a truck had dumped about 2 to 3 inches of gravel in a pile covering the shoulder. Riding narrow tires through this pile was interesting but easier than sand.

Since my last ride on February 9th the weather has not been kind to bicyclists. Today is the first one the temperature made it to 60, climbing from 34 at 6:30AM to 62 when I started the ride at 1:24. By the time I got back home at 4:02 it was 64 degrees. Riding in the shadows the wind had a chill to it making me glad I wore 2 long sleeve jerseys, leg warmers, windbreaker jacket and shorts. I decided it was warm enough to wear regular gloves with some reservations at the beginning of the ride where the shadows were frequent. Once I was out in the open the sun helped warm me.

Apparently one other rider thought it was a good day to ride. I saw him waiting to cross W. Lake Houston Parkway coming out of Kingwood Greens.

The route today totaled 32.06 miles at a 15.5 mph average speed. February miles have a struggle so far with only 77 miles so far. The 370 mile goal for the month looks like a tough one. The weather looks even better tomorrow (Friday) with clear sky and 72 degrees. Saturday it cools down a few degrees. The plan is to ride the Humble Lions Bike Ride on Saturday and the weather should not get in the way.

Road Racing Returns with Boneshaker Pace Bend

texasbikeracing.com

2014 Texas Road Racing Returns with Boneshaker Pace Bend Feb. 23
by Jeff Cutler
Competitive cycling in Texas is usually pretty straightforward. Roads are dry and debris-free. The weather is conducive to hammering out miles at speed. The excitement of closely contested races gets everyone amped about results, personal bests, podiums, and the associated race-scene camaraderie.
Unfortunately, the start to 2014 threw a chilly wrench in that whole scenario. With snow and ice on roads from Austin to Dallas, preseason training was relegated to the gym and team spins indoors.
But we’ve made it. The first big road-race weekend of 2014 has arrived as Walburg/Pace Bend is scheduled for the weekend of February 22-23. With Walburg on Saturday, the focus of many local racers…

Fly6 watches your back with video camera taillight

by Amanda Kooser        news.cnet.com

Combine a red taillight with an HD video camera and you can light up your biking rear while recording the antics of cars behind you.

Mounting a video camera to a bicycle is nothing new. Plenty of people have recorded their two-wheeled conquests this way. A device called the Rideye even went so far as to act like a “black box” recorder for bikes in case of accidents.
The Fly6 combo taillight and HD video camera on Kickstarter figures that the greatest threats are most likely to sneak up on you from behind in the form of motorists behaving badly. The idea is to capture them on video should an incident occur.
For a pledge of about $122, you get a Fly6 capable of 720p HD recording. It runs on a rechargeable battery with up to 5 hours of life. The video recording loops automatically, so you…
