About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Four major Trinity River projects, including Sylvan and Continental bridges and Skyline Trail, due to open June 15
By Robert Wilonsky        cityhallblog.dallasnews.com

At last, we have a concrete opening date for the Sylvan Avenue Bridge. And the Continental Avenue Bridge. And the West Dallas Gateway. And the 4.5-mile-long trail along the Trinity River that Angela Hunt and Scott Griggs spent much of 2013 fighting for.
Mark it down: The grand opening for the foursome has been set for June 15, otherwise known as the Trinity River Revel (and Father’s Day). Among the events planned: a gospel brunch on the Continental Avenue Bridge, which is in the midst of being converted into an elevated park of sorts; live music, including something in the big-band flavor; a classic-car show; a Dallas Video Association-presented show on the Continental; and other events yet to…

Wausau24! 40 hours of driving and 24 hours of Racing in one weekend.
www.bigpigracing.org
It’s 9:45 AM and I’ve realized I left more gear at the house. I’m supposed to be at Mike’s house, on the other side of Dallas, in 15 minutes.
Three guys and all the gear you can shake a stick at.
Mike, Luke, and I are headed up to (almost) Canada to ride our bikes in Wausau, WI for 24 hours at the Nine Mile Recreation area. It’s a beautiful park with Pine trees, rocks, and plenty of elevation change.
A friend of ours, Denise, has been racing this course for the past two years. Each time she comes back with tales of glory and awesomeness. This year, we decide to take her up on the challenge and a Mike and I decide to make the trip. We get Luke to come with as support since we’re going to be driving a ton, and want to survive the drive back to Dallas.
The drive is fairly uneventful. I get to cross a new state, Kansas. I’ve never actually been through…

Area cyclist to take national stage at U.S. Special Olympics
by Reese Gordon        www.news-journal.com

KILGORE — Mike Steed’s journey has taken him from a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at age 2 and difficulty walking to competitive cycling.
And now, Steed has reached one of the pinnacles of his sport. He has been selected to compete in the U.S. Special Olympics National Games set for June in New Jersey.
Trainer Mark DePaepe said Steed is one of only four Special Olympic cyclists in Texas who will be going to New Jersey for the games.
“I was shocked,” Steed said. “I didn’t think I’d get to go to something like this. I’ve just got to keep riding and…

29th Annual Super Bowl Sunday Ride – Greater Dallas Bicyclists
February 2, 2014
Due to the inclement weather expected tomorrow, the Greater Dallas Bicyclists has cancelled the Super Bowl Sunday Ride starting in North Dallas. We expect rides leaving from other locations may also be cancelled, but that is up to the discretion of the individual ride leaders. Please check the web sites or contact the leaders for the status of your ride.
Stay warm and enjoy the game!

To all participants. The Super Bowl Ride is always contingent on weather conditions. The low temperatures and chance of precipitation forecast for Sunday could put a damper on the ride, especially for those groups riding the furthest. The leaders of the individual rides will need to make their own decisions as to whether or not their ride will take place. Please check with your ride leader(s) on Sunday morning. …

Change of Plans

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2014 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 1, 2014

I laid out today’s route in my mind as I prepared to leave home on the ride. Rolling down the driveway at 12:17 the cloudy sky looked a little threatening. The temperature finally made it to 70 degrees. Everything was rolling along nicely until I crossed FM1960 on Pinehurst Trail where the light drizzle started. The drizzle stayed with me until I circled back on Atascocita Shores Dr. at FM1960. My first thought was to head back home but I looked at the windshields of the cars coming from the east side of Lake Houston. Not one of them had their wipers on and I decided to ride east over Lake Houston. On the east side I did not encounter any drizzle.

My original route went south on FM2100 to Stroker Road looping east back up Ramsey Road to Old Atascocita Road. Old Atascocita Road intersects with FM2100. The trouble with this route is if it rains there is no place to get shelter. With the gray clouds I did not want to take a chance. When I got FM2100 rather than going south I went north to FM1960. As I turned north onto FM2100 I saw two bikers about 200 yards east of FM2100. They stopped to adjust something and our paths did not cross. I stopped at the usual Huffman Chevron planning to ride north on FM2100 to Smith Road after I ate my snack.

Habit overcame my plan as I left the Chevron station going west on FM1960. I realized my mistake but the traffic going east was heavy and I kept going west. Riding over Lake Houston on FM1960 exposes one to whatever the weather wants to do and as I neared the west side I got back into the drizzle. Riding north on Atascocita Shores Dr. I left the drizzle behind after a few blocks. Later as I rode north on W. Lake Houston Parkway two other bikers came towards me on the bridge sidewalk. I waved at them and they waved back.

I ended up riding 30.4 miles averaging 15.4 mph. My original route would have been 37 miles. February is starting well but tomorrow rain and a cool front are supposed to arrive. I will probably not be able to ride for several days until things warm up. Year to date miles total 345. The goal for February will be 370 miles duplicating February 2013.
