About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Stolen Bike Houston – Transition Covert V2 White
by CovertV2        forums.mtbr.com
Long time reader, first time poster.
Unfortunately I am creating a post to alert everyone in the Houston area of a stolen bike. It is a Transition Covert V2, in white. It can be identified by the missing front deralliuer shifter, Specialized brand chain slap guard, and relatively new tubeless high roller tires.
It was stolen in Midtown, today between 11:30am and 12:30pm
If seen, it would be much appreciated if you could message me with location and other details. I have filed a police report.

She was pronounced dead at the scene more than an hour later.
The Luling and Union Pacific police departments both investigated the…

Dark Blue Yugo and Trailers

Texbiker.net Posted on January 18, 2014 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 18, 2014

Today’s ride featured two out of the ordinary things. First while I stopped at the Huffman Chevron I saw a woman riding her bike towing a one wheel trailer going west on FM1960. The trailer sported bright yellow bags that appeared to be filled. The woman rode at a steady pace but not real fast. I was almost finished with my snack and got on my bike a few minutes after she passed out of sight. I wanted to catch up with her to ask how far she was going. While I was dressed in my cool weather gear ( long sleeve jersey, leg warmers, windbreaker jacket and shorts) she was bare armed with shorts.

As I pedaled hard to catch up with her I spotted a dark blue Yugo sitting not far from the pavement in the grass on the north side of FM1960. The paint shined from a nice wax and the for sale sign in the window beckoned people to come look but no one was there as I passed by. I can’t remember the last time I saw a Yugo and I wondered if this was a lone survivor around here.

Once I got beyond the Yugo I kept up the pace and finally caught up with the woman rider on the west side of the FM1960 causeway over Lake Houston. I asked if she was riding far and I was surprised when she said no just to Kingwood. I rode on leaving her behind and wishing her a good ride. My mind came up with several explanations on why she was pulling a trailer with a load of stuff but no clear one.

Today must have been bike trailer day. Earlier on my way south out of Kingwood I passed another bicyclist pulling a two wheel trailer and then another one on my return ride back into Kingwood. The two bicyclists not pulling a trailer also in the early part of the ride were out numbered.

As I rolled out the driveway at 1:24 the sky was blue and the temperature stood at 68. The light breeze did not present a problem. I was pleased with my wardrobe selection and felt comfortable. I did notice while I stopped at the Huffman Chevron that my gloves were dam around the top. By the time I got to Kingwood Drive my gloves were soaked and I wiped them on my shorts in an attempt to dry them some. By the time I got home they were almost dripping. The cause of this is my new Pearl Izumi jacket. The jacket is warm and blocks the wind but there are no vents so as I heat up the moisture is trapped inside. I unzipped the jacket some but there is a limit on this if I want to stay warm and not catch too much wind.

Riding the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route totaled 31.26 miles at a 15.4 mph average speed. January miles now total 210.96 putting me less than 100 miles to my 309 mile goal. With 13 days left I should make it but the weather can be fickle so it is not s sure thing. No riding tomorrow but the weather on Monday should be 75 with a clear sky; perfect for riding.

I am trying two new ways to display ride information. First the gallery below is different. Click on one of the images to enlarge it. Next I am only including interactive route maps. Click on either map to go to Ridewithgps.com or Garmin Connect. You can inspect the route and ride metrics further at those websites.

Capellan gets shock incarceration, 10 years’ probation in cyclist’s 2012 death
Jurors handed down 10-year suspended prison sentence in December.

But before 24-year-old Benito Francis Capellan is out on the street, he must complete 134 days on shock probation — a boot camp-styled program meant to discourage first offenders from re-offending by exposing them to an…
