About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Holy crap!

Texas is taking nationals by storm with four podiums so far. Fred “Captain America” Schmid took second in the 80+ and Christina Gokey-Smith took the same in women 40-44 with Catherine Moore in third, same race.

I would have guessed those ladies to be in their late 20s, but that’s just me.

Rolando Roman – 61/88 SS
Ben Cross – 77/101 Men’s Non-champ 30-44
Chris Carlson – 22/103 Men’s Non-champ 45-99
Michael Bohn – 52/103 Men’s Non-champ 45-99
Martin Soetaert  – 28/58 Men’s 55-59
Bill Cullins – 13/14 Men’s 65-69

Perspiration Soaked Gloves

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

Today was what January weather should be like. Clear sky, 71 degrees and 10 mph NW breeze. Even with a fairly light breeze I struggled whenever I rode into it. Going north on Loop 494 it took a lot of effort to go 13 to 14 mph and sometimes all I managed was 11 mph. Once I turned left onto FM1485 the wind was not in my face so much. Going west on Gene Campbell Road allowed me to pick up speed to recoup the time lost and increase my average speed. The left dog leg on Gene Campbell moved the wind more to my back and the effort dropped down.

Riding southeast on FM1314 put the wind almost directly behind me and helped my winter-weakened leg muscles get my speed up to 21 mph almost all the way to the Stripes station at Old Sorters Road where I took a break to refuel and drink a Diet Pepsi. When I got to Stripes I noticed perspiration running down my arm soaking my gloves. They were wet enough to wring out. This was probably caused by the new windbreaker jacket I wore. It did not have any vents so the sweat built up. Hanging the gloves on the handlebar in the sun dried them out while I took my break. After all of the cold and dampness this week sitting in the sun was very pleasant. The humidity today was a very low 24%, a big change from yesterday with 79%.

With today’s 35.21 mile ride I reached 103.43 miles for January. This is the longest ride of the year but I’ve only rode 4 times.

I spotted another rider in Oakhurst but that was all.

Tomorrow the weather is supposed to repeat today and I plan on biking but not as far.

Leaf Trip Adventures
By Kim Jennings            bicyclesoutbackracing.net

After a long season of racing bikes, it’s always refreshing to take some time and explore new territory on your bicycle. Last month Michelle and I took the RV down to the epic Texas hill country to check out the changing color of the fall leaves and to find some climbing. We accomplished both activites by staying in Vanderpool, TX which is adjacent to Lost Maples State Park and the quaint town of Utopia. The names certainly represent the hidden gems found in this south western area of Texas.
We headquartered our campsite at a local mom and pop owned property called, “A Little Piece of Heaven.” It did the name justice and was located a few miles off the main highway and smack in the middle of some beautiful routes we found on the Map My Ride website. There was a clear fresh water stream right outside our campsite and there was…

The trail consists of multiple sections, including “Mulligan”, near the golf course, “Picnic” which is along the creek and “Deception”, the largest of the trails.
The Picnic and Mulligan are about 1.75M total between the two, with Deception being the…

Almost Turned Back

Texbiker.net Posted on January 10, 2014 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2016

I stopped to think as I got ready to ride. I almost forgot what wardrobe goes with the weather conditions. After a couple of minutes it came to me and I pulled out a long sleeve jersey, shorts and the new windbreaker jacket. I thought this would be warm enough based on my walking around outside but when I rolled out the driveway I thought leg warmers would’ve been nice and maybe a second jersey but I kept riding. It was 67 degrees and overcast so not much warmth came from the sun. It took about 6 miles before I started to feel comfortable by then I came into some light drizzle/mist just north of Lake Houston in Kingwood. This drizzle stayed with me until I crossed over W. Lake Houston Parkway and rode south on Pinehurst Trail Drive.

Thoughts of shortening the ride from 31 miles to 23 or so crossed my mind not wanting to get caught in real rain but I pressed on and when I reached FM1960 to cross over into Walden the drizzle went away. From then on until I got home the drizzle stayed away.

The route through Atascocita, Walden and Huffman totaled 32.39 miles, almost as much as the two previous rides in 2014. Between the cold spells and rain yesterday riding days have been few. So far I’ve rode 68.22 miles this year. Not much but the weather forecast says the next two days should be clear and in the 60’s. If this happens I plan on biking.

In January 2013 I rode 11 days for a total of 309.39 miles. I will need to pickup the pace if I want to match that.

I included a slide of the weather radar when I finished the ride. Several patches of rain were in the area looking for me to rain on.
