About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dozens of Austinites beat the heat on two wheels Sunday to check out recently installed temporary art exhibits along Lady Bird Lake. AUSTIN, Texas — Around 30 Austinites beat the heat early by cruising on two wheels and checking out recently installed temporary art exhibitions near Lady Bird Lake.

The Trail Conservancy and Sunday Cruise ATX put on the free 8-mile bike ride on Sunday.

Riders started in East Austin and stopped at three temporary art exhibitions along the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, hearing from the artists.

The installations are part of the TEMPO on the Trail program from The Trail Conservancy and the …

Reversing A Route Exercises The Mind And Legs

Texbiker.net Posted on August 11, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 11, 2024

Biking a route in reverse exercises the mind and the legs, especially if it is not very often. Today I rode Kingwood streets and trails in the reverse of my usual direction. The trails were an unknown if they would be cleared but no problems. I saw numerous damaged trees and stumps though. Beginning at 12:08 PM meant the heat was on. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike. I used some landmarks to identify some turns. I wasn’t sure how many miles this would be and ended at 2:20 PM with 25.25 miles. August now totals 302 miles leaving 602 miles to reach my goal.

The history behind Houston’s ghost bikes, the wheeled memorials for slain cyclists

By John Lomax V | www.houstonchronicle.com

Anyone who’s spent enough time in Houston has seen at least one ghost bike. The stark-white bicycles serve a grim reminder of the perils of Houston’s car-centric infrastructure.

James Midkiff was riding his bike on a cool evening in late 2023 when he was struck by a driver in a white sedan. They didn’t stop to help, and the 36-year-old died from his injuries. No one was ever arrested for Midkiff’s killing. Crimestoppers offered a paltry $5,000 for anyone with information regarding his killer’s identity, but the money went unclaimed. …

Early Start, Smooth Ride: A Saturday Spin on the Cervelo Caledonia

Texbiker.net Posted on August 10, 2024 by Rick AnkrumAugust 10, 2024

Began the ride at 8:13 AM for the earliest start this week. I chose the usual Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden, with a few changes at the start to get to FM1960 to see other cyclists. When I got to Kingwood Drive I avoided the spot where I crashed on Thursday by riding through the Kingwood High School parking lot. Maybe the limbs and brush blocking the greenbelt will be removed someday. The Cervelo Caledonia moved along without the chirping sound from the front disc brake. My adjustment fixed that problem. Riding east over Lake Houston I was beginning to think I wouldn’t see any cyclists until a single cyclist came into sight heading west. Fairlake Lane didn’t have any cyclists though. As I crossed over FM2100 I saw a large group of cyclists heading my way. I waved, they waved making the ride special. Making the u-turn on Old Atascocita Road I rode back to FM2100, north to Huffman, west on FM1960. Going through Walden I turned left at Farmingham Road to get to the Atascocita Hike and Bike Trail. That took me under FM1960, across W. Lake Houston Parkway to Kings Park Way. From there the usual streets brought me back into Kingwood to finish the ride at 11:03 AM. I felt a coolness in the weather. I don’t know if it was from the 73.4 degree dew point or the 80% humidity, both lower than last Saturday’s ride.
