About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

With A Biking Buddy – July 20th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

Today I rode with Ronnie Clark on a route I have not taken since April 2011.We met at Kingwood Park High School and set off to US59 to ride to Splendora. The comfortable 73 degrees stayed with us as did the 89% humidity. By the time we reached Splendora sweat was freely flowing from about every pore I had. S hor stop at the Chevron station allowed us to towel off some of the perspiration and fill up our water bottles. Turning west on FM2090 the next stop was Grangerland. The road surface on FM2090 was smooth and we held a nice steady pace. I did not check my average but I could see I had made up the slow time I accumulated getting our of Kingwood to US59.

Ronnie had not been to Grangerland before so I pointed out “downtown” as we turned right onto FM3083 and rode to Creighton Road. About 2 miles before we got to Creighton Road there was a small hill that slowed us down some but we were able to regain our speed. At our turn we took another quick stop at the Valero station (one of the remodeled buildings I noticed) refilling water bottles and toweling off more sweat. The temperature had increased some and probably the humidity had went down some. Our pace was still good.

Leaving the Valero station we rode on a rough Creighton Road where two dogs came out to the road to bark but not chase us, thank goodness. Making it through the rough pavement and bumps we arrived at FM1314 where we would head back to Porter. By now we were around 36 miles of the expected 63 mile ride. It turned out that my miles would end up at 63.01. By now we were starting to feel some slowdown from are previous pace. Fortunately the breeze was light so no headwind to battle but we could have sued a little more breeze to help with keeping cool. When we stopped at the Valero station I noticed we were at 33.7 miles and I told Ronnie our next stop would be the Stripes station on FM1314 before US59 in Porter.

Arriving at the Stripes station we took a break for me to down a Diet Pepsi and two granola bars to carry me through the final 11 miles or so. From there we biked through Briar Tree and Oakhurst with a little more energy from the rest stop. Winding over the streets we exited onto the south bound US59 service road north of Kingwood Drive. While we rode this section some rain drops came down but not any more than the sweat we were producing. The streets were wet so I slowed some on the turns.

Making a U-turn at Kingwood Drive there was a short stretch along the service road and then onto the street past Homewood Suites taking us to Loop 494. Once we made it onto Loop 494 we did not get too far before Ronnie suffered a rear tire flat. We gathered at the stop light into Kings Manor while Ronnie replaced his tube and aired up the tire. It was a little spongy after he aired it up so we took the most direct route so he could get home before any other problem came up.

At the 58 mile point I checked my average speed and it was 16.1 mph which surprised me. I knew we were riding at a good pace but I did not thing we were that good. I maintained that average until the end of the ride. It may take a day or so to recover from this longer than usual ride but weather permitting I hope to ride some tomorrow after church. Ronnie plans on riding the Katy Flatland Ride which is more aggressive than mine.

Mileage marks after today’s ride:

  • 200.92 miles this week
  • 595.43 miles for July
  • 3921 miles for the year

Stolen Bikes Sure to Rise in San Antonio: Do Something!
by Matthew            bike4heck.com
As cycling in San Antonio and across the nation increases so will people willing to cash in illegally on it!
There have been two reported bicycles stolen in the past two days that I’m aware of!

Local Pawn Shop Buying Stolen Bicycles
Bike Friendly Oak Cliff

This summer seems to be a great time for thieves to steal a bicycle in Dallas, as a number of people we’ve heard are losing their rides, left and right.  It’s never a good feeling and you find something that you could have done better to avoid the incident, however we’d like to offer those who have had their bicycles stolen some new information.

A friend of BFOC recently had his nice ride stolen, and so like many others he decided to hit up local pawn shops to hold onto that…

Christian comedian completes 2,200-mile bike ride to Rockwall
By JIM HARDIN Herald-Banner Staff

FATE — Chris Quimby’s two-month, 2,200-mile biking journey from Maine to Rockwall wasn’t finished when he reached the “finish line” on Nash Street.

“It was the end of one chapter,” Quimby said, “and I don’t know what the rest of the book looks like.”

Waiting for Quimby at the finish line on June 21 was Quimby’s Rockwall friend, Brian Rushing. Joining Rushing was his…

The Case of the Missing Roubaix
by Eliot Landrum        www.bikingindallas.com

This week has truly been a roller coaster.

From my perspective, it all started at 7pm on Wednesday evening. I opened the interior door to my garage to find that the garage door was wide open. Assuming that one of my roommates had just accidentally left it open, I went to my car parked in the driveway. Walking back in, I counted the bikes… 1, 2, 3, 4… wait.. where’s #5? I left it here, right? Earlier in the week I had it inside, but I moved it to the garage, right? I did a quick scan and looked under / around and had a roommate come look and…

Distant Thunder – July 19th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on July 19, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 6, 2017

Reaching for the door knob at the end of the ride I heard the rumble of thunder in the distance. During my stop at the Huffman Chevron I checked the weather on my phone at 12:44 and it said thunderstorms would reach Huffman by 1:15 giving me about 30 minutes head start to get home. Scanning the sky I saw dark clouds on the horizon to the south and east but I reminded myself that looking at an angle can make them look darker than they really are. In the slides below is one showing the radar after I got home.

Anticipating the ride tomorrow to the north for about 63 miles I did not want to ride too far or too hard today. I rode to Atascocita and Walden before going across Lake Houston to loop around Huffman. This route totaled 32.59 miles at a 15.6 mph average speed. The temperature hung at 86 to 88 due to the clouds and the wind stayed calm.

I am still riding with the two missing chrainring bolts waiting for the replacement one to arrive. So far I don’t notice and problem doing this but I suspect the chainrings flex some when the chain is not centered on the cassette.

Mileage points: this week 137.91, July 532.43, year to date 3858. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for July 18th

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2013 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2013

This evening I participated in a conference call with BikeTexas. The call was to discuss the ongoing survey, BikeTexas missions, strategy and tactics. It was informative and encouraging to listen to what the other participants had to say. The survey responses give an insight to what over 1300 people in Texas think about bicycling here and how BikeTexas can affect bicycling education, infrastructure, and safety. As they learn from the survey and calls I think some changes will take place.

by JANET ST. JAMES        WFAA

FORT WORTH — A cattle drive is more likely sight in the Fort Worth Stockyards than a herd of cyclists. But, a group of bikers Thursday morning aimed to change that.

“We know if you could just make the active option the easy option in a city, you can raise the activity level by 30 percent,” said Dan Buettner, founder of the Blue Zones Project. “You don’t need fancy gym memberships, you don’t need fancy machines, you just need to be able to walk places, be able to bike places.”
