About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Council to be Briefed on Status of Dallas Bike Plan THIS Wednesday, April 3rd
Bike Friendly Oak Cliff

Late last year, a few BFOC members were told at a meeting about the ill fated plans to NOT create a separated cycle track on the Continental Viaduct that the City Council would be briefed on the status of and future plans for the Dallas Bike Plan.

That was in November 2012.

After several delays, we’ve finally received word that briefing will take place this…

Is two-way traffic normal on wooded single-track trails?
by JDfromBR            forums.mtbr.com/texas
Just looking at some of the videos of trails in Memorial park, it appears that some of the wooded single track trails are pretty cool and even moderately technical, but I noticed that there was on-coming traffic in some cases.

I’m still a noob when it comes to trails, as I have limited experience. Is 2-way…

Lost Camera at Chappell Hill
I realized this is a long shot but I have to ask.

We were out in Chappell Hill riding a motorcycle in Friday March 29th. We saw our GoPro camera fall off our bike. We turned around but were unable to locate the camera.

We were sharing the road with many cyclists and are still hopeful that we may recover the camera. It was brand new and would really appreciate any assistance you may be able to lend.
Thank you

The 2013 “Chat with the Chief”
www.austincycling.org
On Thursday, March 21st, 2013, the Austin Cycling Association’s 5th annual ‘Chat with the Chief’ took place at Bicycle Sport Shop on South Lamar. Please Be Kind to Cyclists was instrumental in organizing this year’s meeting.

As a community, cyclists are concerned about the increased number of traffic fatalities, and recent, high-profile cases raise questions about how the legal system functions. For this year’s event, the Austin Cycling Association (ACA) and Please Be Kind to Cyclists assembled a panel of experts to help us understand the process of enforcement and adjudication of traffic offenses.

The goal is to develop an understanding of the process and to define methods to improve it, for everyone from the officer writing the citation, through to the prosecuting attorney, to the cyclists themselves. Our intent is to begin a discussion of…

Going for a RIDE at new indoor cycling studio
By Pam LeBlanc            Fit City

What’s up with the flurry of new indoor cycling studios in Austin?

First came CYC, an indoor cycling studio near the University of Texas campus, where you’ll get confused about whether you’re at a nightclub or a spinning class. Each session includes drum beating, towel whipping and screaming.

Now we’ve got RIDE, where a dance version of an Adele song was playing when I walked in the door of the downtown studio.

And that’s not all. I’m planning a visit to another indoor cycling studio called PureRyde, where the bikes apparently tilt with you as you spin, in a few…

The Lancaster Country Ride in Lancaster, TX
The Wheelbrothers
The Lancaster Country Ride invites you to join their ride on April 13, 2013 starting at Town Square Lancaster, TX

We were lucky enough to be granted an interview with Mike Eipper of Lancaster Country Ride to ask some questions about their upcoming ride.

Lancaster Country Ride

Why join this year’s ride?
The Lancaster Country Ride is the best ride in Texas! Most scenery, well managed, just plain fun! And still only $20!

How long has the event been around?
The event has been around for 15 years.

What was the motivation behind starting the tour and who benefits from it?
We use this ride as a club-fund raiser. It benefits both our own events, charitable organizations, and…

Bluebonnets in Bloom
by TC        Turnin’ Cranks

Not withstanding the issues from a couple of days ago, I intend to keep training as if I’m still going to make races.

To that end, I managed to get in my long ride yesterday, putting in 26 miles over 2 and a half hours. Road Betty from the house to the Greenbelt for a good loop in the dirt and then the return ride home.

I could tell I didn’t ride much this past week as I was feeling particularly spry. I was feeling strong and decided to go for a few Strava PRs during the ride.

First up was Mulch Hill. The loose over loose, chunky bitch of a climb. I haven’t yet been able to clear the whole thing without dabbing, but I feel I am really close to…

All Bets are Off
by TC            Turnin’ Cranks
I’ve secretly been collecting parts and pieces to convert my old 26? Stumpjumper hardtail into a single speed fun ride. The ole Stumpy had rim brakes, and mid grade components. Seemed like a fun little side project to pick up parts to convert to disc brakes, tubeless tires and finally, into a single speed machine!

I’ve been accumulating used and new parts for several months and the final shipment came in last week to complete the conversion.

Friday night after the kids were down, I headed out to the garage to…

April Fools Day – April 1st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on April 1, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 24, 2017

April Fools Day did not keep me from riding and I encountered no fools or jokes while on my bike. What started off as a cloudy day changed around noon into a nice 78 to 81 degree one with some sun shining through broken clouds. A slight breeze worked at keeping the warmth spread around with a very slight hint of coolness when I rode through some shade. I wore a bright orange long sleeve jersey more for sun protection than warmth but there some spots where the long sleeves kept me warm. Riding over Lake Houston does feel as chilly as it did a week or so back. I think the repeated warm days and sun are heating the water up.

I did see another biker today and we exchanged waves though we were going opposite directions. My schedule is not so flexible today so I did not stop in Huffman for my usual Diet Pepsi. I also adjusted my route a little and ended up riding 30.06 miles. This is a good start for April. Last year I rode 719.36 miles on 23 days so I will set that as my goal for this April. This averages 31.3 miles per ride for April. Last month I averaged 31.65 miles per ride. 2013 year to date now totals 1344.70 miles.

The next two days have a chance of rain; Tuesday 50% and Wednesday 70%. This could use up some of the off days for April.

For interactive versions of today’s ride go to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com.

Angry Gang of Young Cyclists Takes over Northbound Lamar
bicycleaustin.info

On my way to Natural Grocers (via car), I was surprised to see in my rear view mirror a group of maybe 25-30 young people (late teens/early 20s) on bikes taking up all of the northbound lanes, swerving, giving motorists the finger, riding in the turn lane, and otherwise acting in a very confrontational way.

I was stopped at the light ahead of them, and they reached the intersection, and thank goodness stopped at the red light. They all crowded around my car (super close) and gave me “dirty looks”. This whole thing really made me nervous for my own safety and for theirs, because they were riding erratically…
