About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cyclists can choose from routes of 26, 42 and 62 miles. A 2-mile ride for children is also planned.

Last year’s ride raised approximately $50,000 for the Rosedale School, located at 2117 W. 49th Street. Money raised helps fund facilities and programs, including a pilot program to…

Ron Swift Talks About His Texas Cycling Challenge 200 Overall Win
By John Foote        www.ultraracenews.com

My name is Ron Swift and I’m a cyclist from a small town, Lorena, in central Texas.   I have enjoyed riding bikes since I was very young and managed to race BMX in the 80’s and mountain bikes some during the 90’s.  About five years ago, after suffering a lower back nerve injury, I was forced to sell my bicycle and quit cycling completely.  Fast forward to about 1 ½ year ago, when we bought my wife, Jackie a recumbent trike.  I ended up buying a trike to ride with her, and it didn’t seem to hurt my back or leg.  Within a couple of months we were both riding recumbent bikes and about a year ago, I got the bike I am…

No Fancy Route – March 22nd Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 22, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 24, 2017

Nothing fancy about today’s route. Ride north to Roman Forest Blvd. on the US59 service road and then turn around on the southbound service road back to Kingwood Drive. When I left home I thought the wind would behave but as the ride progressed it picked up from 4 mph to 9 mph and 18 mph gusts from the SSW. Yesterday’s wind was far more stronger and today I held my average speed at 15.2 mph over the 28.61 mile route. The cloudy sky kept the sun hidden most of the time but the temperature topped out at 83 degrees at the finish. To counteract the lack of sun I wore one of my brighter long sleeve jerseys (see the slides below). With today’s mileage March miles come in at 480.46, 100 miles from my goal. Year to date miles are 1162.05.

Tomorrow I am leading a ride with 3 people from the Houston Cycling Club. The weather looks like a repeat of today.

Highland Lakes high school mountain-biking team to compete at Reveille Peak Ranch
DANIEL CLIFTON • PICAYUNE EDITOR    www.dailytrib.com
BURNET — The epicenter of Texas high school mountain biking erupts at Reveille Peak Ranch when the facility hosts the second races of the season March 24.

“Right now, we’re expecting 80 riders, which would be the most in Texas for a high school (mountain-biking) race,” said David DeFily, coach and organizer of the Highland Lakes Composite Team. “The sport is really picking up here in Texas.”

The Texas High School Mountain Biking League formed in 2010 to promote the sport and organize races and other events. About 74 riders participated in the league’s first races of the season, the…

Biking with Máthews Fazzaopen
from Biking In Dallas by Eliot Landrum

One of the best things about biking in Dallas is the people. Dallas cyclists are not just one type… we are all shapes, sizes, styles, colors, ages, and lifestyles. We ride big bikes, small bikes, fat tires, thin tires, one tire, three tires, sitting up, sitting back, leaning forward, fast, slow, and everything in between. To highlight and celebrate the variety of the people of the Dallas cycling scene, we are launching a brand-new feature series called “Biking with…“ We hope that you’ll enjoy meeting the folks that are Biking in Dallas.

Just a few months ago, I met Máthews Fazza on a social ride in East Dallas. The day was a bit chilly, and most of us were bundled up… but Matt had his shorts on and was ready to roll on his beautiful Mash. You may not have had the opportunity to meet Matt yet, because he’s actually a bit new to Dallas. He moved here 10 months ago from Brazil,  ”I moved here because I married this…

LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour set to roll Saturday in Stonewall
from Fit City By Pam LeBlanc

Bicycling through my neighborhood is one thing. Pedaling through a former president’s ranch is another thing entirely.

This weekend, though, you can ride through the Lyndon Baines Johnson Ranch in Stonewall during the LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour. Better yet, you can do the ride, eat barbecue, catch a tour of the LBJ ranch house, then join Luci Baines Johnson, the president’s daughter, for a bicycle tour of historic landmarks on the ranch.

Recreational cyclists can choose from distances of 10, 30, 42, 62 and 85 miles on Saturday, March 23. Members of the Wheelmen, a national group that…

Fit Wars: Are we there yet?
from The Wheel Brothers – Cycling in Texas by WB admin

Bike fitting has been around as long as the bicycle itself really gaining prominence in the last 5 years and can closely be paralleled to a “gold rush” or “wild west” as certifications are subjective and easy to obtain from the shop’s leading manufacturer. Riding the coattails of increased fit awareness, anyone can call themselves a fit expert and many do. Not driven by the bike industry itself but by manufacturers looking to differentiate and validate their brands it is an interdependent win for manufacturers and retailers alike. Benefitting from the marketing push of the manufacturer, the retailer’s focus is to drive sales through bike fit.  Thus most fit professionals have approximately 3-7 days of industry training and rely on product commission as a large portion of their salaries.

Whereas bike fit itself is the marriage of bike and body, genuine fit professionals possess years of experience and training and were fitting before a studio housed anything but expensive art. Now the part-time sales associate turned kinesiology expert can charge hundreds of dollars after a week-long manufacturer-certified class.  Couple this certification with…

Windier, cloudier, cooler and tougher – March 21st Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 21, 2013 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 24, 2017

Windier, cloudier, cooler and tougher. Compared to yesterday’s ride today had all of these attributes. The wind bumped up to 24 mph and 29 mph gusts from the SSE. The blue sky got covered up by many clouds with the sun peeking out once in awhile. Cool temperatures came from the wind chill and 74 degrees at the start dropping to 70 by the time I finished at 4:05. I wore long sleeve and short sleeve jerseys but I think two long sleeve ones would have been better. The tough part happened whenever I rode into that wind. Riding west over Lake Houston I leaned slightly to my left to offset the wind force coming off the lake. I picked up my speed whenever I got the wind behind me so my average speed edged up to 14.9 mph though at time going into the wind I dropped down to 12 mph or so.

The route rotation today pointed to the south and east going into the wind and finishing with the wind. I debated about stopping in Huffman for a rest and a Diet Pepsi but I went ahead and stopped. finding a place out of the wind was not easy. I rode 31.08 miles moving closer to my March goal with 451.85 miles so far. Year to date now totals 1133.44 miles. You can see other version of the ride at Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com.

Tomorrow the wind should die down and the temperature increases to 82, warmer than today.
