About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Reveille Peak Ride Pics – 3-9-13
AustinBike.com

What a great opportunity to get out before the rain.  We hit RPR and despite a bit of slow drizzle, the trails were in great shape and we got a great ride in.

We hit the long route, knocking out over 1850 feet of climbing in under 15 total miles.  The Austin Ridge Riders were also having a…

What is Really Happening at City Park
by John        AustinBike.com
I ride City Park. A lot.  In checking my GPS logs from last year I did at least 50 laps.  My first trip around the trail was back in the 90’s when I still had hair.  I remember a summer where it rained almost every weekend and Bear, Trailsurfer and I held the weekly City Park ride because nothing else was ever dry.  The trail is amazing in the way that it sheds water after a rain.

Recently there was some work done by the city.  Like it or not, it happened.  Austin Ridge Riders and the local motorcycle folks were involved.  There was a work day a few weeks back, and even though we had a lot of people out there, it seems like there were…

The Waco Race – Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association 2013
by Cooper Sellers

February 16, 2013 – The Waco Race was held at Cameron Park in Waco. This was the 2nd mountain bike race in the TMBRA state series.

The week prior to this race I entered the SuperD at Rocky Hill Ranch and for over 5 minutes was at or above my maximum heart rate. Something happened that day that set me back quite a bit…

More Like A Lamb – March 13th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 13, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2017

More blue sky and 70 degree weather for today’s ride. I pulled out the driveway at 12:51 with 70 degrees. By the time I returned home at 3:26 it was 78 degrees. Only a light breeze stirred up things but it felt chilly so I was glad I wore my windbreaker jacket over the short and long sleeve jerseys. I guess it takes a while for the wind to warm up. Spring arrives a week from today and the forecast says the warm weather could be around until then. March weather now is more like a lamb.

After riding north yesterday I went south and east through Atascocita, Walden and then Huffman before heading back home. I added an extra leg to my normal route to get above 30 miles and the route turned out to be 32.02 miles. This increases my March miles to 239.48. I am making progress toward my 581 mile March goal. Year to date totals 921.07. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com data and maps.

Good news: Studies show bike commuting is one of the best ways to stay healthy
People for Bikes Blog

It’s always a pleasure when scientific studies confirm your own long-held opinions, especially when what you think flies in the face of all conventional wisdom.

For instance, who knew that chocolate éclairs and triple fudge caramel brownies actually contain fewer calories than a 12-ounce glass of skim milk? Or that every $1000 you spend on lavish vacations before the age of 65 will, over the long run, provide you with more retirement income than if you’d stashed that same $1000 in…

Team Texas, a nonprofit organization of North Texas police officers and family members who help the families of fallen officers, is holding a charity bike ride in May.

“It’s a really good group of people who come together to honor officers who died in the line of duty and who died doing what they love,” Joann Jackson said.

Road to Hope participants each ride for a fallen police officer in a physically demanding and…

Freelance Route – March 12th Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 12, 2013 by Rick AnkrumMarch 3, 2017

The weather was promising this morning but it took a while to warm up. I had a small time window to ride due to a late afternoon meting but just as I was getting ready to leave on my ride I got an email that the meeting was cancelled. So this opened more time and since I haven’t rode since last Friday I really wanted to get some bike time. As I watched the thermometer slowly rise I was determined to ride even if the temperature was below my 60 degree threshold. I got my cool weather wardrobe ready with 2 long sleeve jerseys, leg warmers, shorts, full finger gloves and windbreaker jacket. As I rolled out 12:07 PM it was 63 degrees and I appreciated the clothing choice. The royal blue clear sky was great and the light 4 mph breeze did not cause me much of a problem but it did bring a chill with it.

Sometimes I like to freelance my route and today was one of those days. I knew I was going north just because the last ride went south. The route took me out of Kingwood on what I call the “back way” on Mills Branch Drive and Ford Road. Staying on Loop 494 was my typical path. I turned south on US59 service road and went through Valley Ranch. When I got to FM1314 rather than go across onto Old Sorters Road I turned right onto FM1314. I tuned left into the elementary school access road to get to Sorters Road and then onto Old Sorters Road. I don’t think I have taken this route section before. I wanted to get close to 30 miles and I ended up at 30.15 miles at an average speed of 15.1 mph. This brings my March miles up to 207.47 leaving 371 miles to reach my goal for the month. Year to date I rode 889.05 miles. Links to Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS.com maps and data.

Weather for the rest of the week looks perfect for riding with clear skies and warm temperatures reaching 81 on Saturday. I plan on riding each day.
